19/11 - Epi 390 ... The First Level

Monday 19th Nov '12

Encouraging family, supportive husband ... Tyra Banks wannabe host ... and sympathetic co-host.

Arnav wants to give Khushi her own project to run ...
Khushi wants to prove herself first ... her confidence, her courage, her self-reliance ... on her own steam.

And so Khushi reaches the auditions ... the first level ... as expected, sniggered at for wearing desi clothes ... the extras who were the other contestants all dressed in non-desi outfits.
A contestant, Amrita, offers Khushi fake sympathy and morale-boosting ...

While Nani, Mami, Anjali, NK and even Arav try to hide Khushi's audition truth from Arnav ... who needs a shave more badly than ever!

Khushi's already low self-confidence takes a beating as the Tyra Banks wannabe shrivels up the other contestants impartially ... while her partner tries to help them ... nice to see that Ms Wannabe Tyra didn't reserve her cattiness for only Khushi ... it was spread pretty evenly among the entire lot.

And Arnav arrives at the venue (a ghastly badly white painted door ... the PH has stopped even trying to make things look decent!) ... and Arnav and Khushi sense each other ...
Khushi ... aisa kabhi nahin hua ki humne unhe mehsoos kiya aur voh na ho ... Embarrassed awww ...

Just as her turn is called ... and she starts stammering about cooking ...

So will Arnav's mere presence give Khushi the confidence that she needs?

Episode was decent again ... the two Arshi scenes at the start and end were nice, and the Arnav scenes with family were sweet ... the auditions scenes were fairly predictable, saved by the false sweetness of Amrita and the universal bitchiness of Ms Wannabe Tyra ...

So Khushi will get through the first level ... almost sure ... then what?

  1. Ok....haven't watched the epi or read the LUs...a kind of first for me...in a long long time...was listening to some songs...an evergreen Kishoreda number...if it has any reference to my state of mind atm, it is not incidental and the ref to "gul' in the song is only incidental LOL

    quote one...

Khilate hain gul yahaan, khil ke bikharane ko
Milate hain dil yahaan, mil ke bichhadane ko
    Khilate hain gul yahaan....

Kal rahe naa rahe, mausam ye pyaar ka
Kal ruke na ruke, dola bahaar ka...
Chaar pal mile jo aaj, pyaar men guzaar de
    Khilate hain gul yahaan...

Jhilon ke honthon par, meghon ka raag hai
Phoolon ke seene men, thandi-thandi aag hai
Dil ke aaine men tu, ye sama utaar de
    Khilate hain gul yahaa...

Pyaasa hai dil sanam, pyaasi ye raat hai
Honthon me dabi-dabi, koi mithi baat hai
In lamhon pe aaj tu, har khushi nisaar de
    Khilate hain gul yahaan...

this one is for u....( for all the lovely VMs u post....)...sat and sun were rather special..

why this song, well becos u see a something extra special in every ARHI moment....the passion that the couple in this song have for each other reminded me of ARHI as much as it reminded me of u...*hugs*

Tere chehre se nazar nahin hatthi
    nazaare hum kya dekhen
tujhe milke bhi pyaas nahin ghatthi
    nazaare hum kya dekhen

pighle badan teri tapti nigaahon se
sholon Ki aanch aaye barfili raahon se
    lage kadmonse aag lipatthi
    nazaare hum kya kekhen...

rangon ki barkha hain khushboo ka saath hain
kisko pata hain ab din Hain ke raat hain
    lage duniya hi aaj simatthi
    nazaare hum kya dekhen...

palkon pe failaa teri palkon ka saaya hain
chehre ne tere mera chehra chhupaya hain
tere jalwon ki dhund nahin chhatthi
    nazaare hum kya dekhen...

Ofc, every song has Arhi in it. But this song has Akash and Payal too!

    2. Hey Su...thanks...Hugs

well this is my husband's fav song and all our song sessions (addas) have to start with this....( and, the ending one is usually "main shayar toh nahin" !!)

    3. I agree about Payash being in this song...there is a thehraav in this song that can probably describe the pair too...pity they did not focus on it in the serial...they tried to go somewhere wth Bubbly (ill-advised)and chameli ka tel but the point took too long that there was no patience left to hear the message in the track...

missing Shweths and Sandy a lot today!!

    4. Rekh,
Loved both your song dedications! The second one - it was always a very playful song for me, I remember a very spirited young Rishi-Neetu dancing to it in Kabhi Kabhie ... never noticed the passion till you brought it in with Arhi :))) Rishi-Neetu were a cute couple ... maybe I was too young to see passion in those days :)))

Su, hayee, that song is one of my favorites too ... like Rekh, our musical evenings are never complete without someone singing that song.

    5. Rekha, big puffy heart love and hugs for you. seeing that song.. i see bits of offscreen romance in their onscreen romance.. in that day and age, when they had to look into each other's eyes and SING the lines to each other, those little glimpses of his sparkling eyes and the passion in a mere touch.. wow.

      thank you!

  5. I did and agreed, it was quite decent - just nothing to write home about, that's all. BS imminent departure and PH's evident lack of interest in show dampens a viewers' enthusiasm. Did you notice how tacky RM is beginning to look also?

Hats off to the remaining team members tho - they are doing their best on the entertainment front.

Did watch bits of Arjun & QH over the weekend - their production values reflect a very different target audience. Don't think either show will get the kind of following IPKKND garnered with its presentation.

loved the song(s) selection Rekha - beautiful classics!

    1. I didn't notice RM, I just noticed the very badly painted white door at the auditions place. The show is just marking time ... I can bet the curtain call will come after the UK trip is over. SP may want it to continue, but the PH is just not interested.

Or maybe PH is fed up of the unceasing bashing ... no track has been given even a decent chance, because everyone has decided what they want to see ... they want Arshi and honeymoon and a few good moments before the show goes off air, and that's it. Which the PH is refusing to give ... if they did, the entire mood would change and people would be prepared to sit through some turmoil.

    2. Dia,
Or could it be a case of all dazzling after BS exits....

they seem to give the impression of caring two hoots for a show that they do intend to keep on air...so whats the catch.....exit for BS and then razzle and dazzle like never before...
i am watching the kind of exit planned for ASR... will give me an idea was this about a witch hunt or not?

Is Khushi's wardrobe/makeover in abeyance for the big event? there has to be some POA behind all this mega nonsense..

      Delete
    3. Oh? I thought Khushi was already out as the next contestant was called for.....???? no???

You know perhaps the saddest part is that IPKKND was truly a victim of its own fame. The PH has faced unceasing bashing from day one on its story tracks/characterisation, etc. e.g. some of the fans on IF banded together to demand that ASR stop manhandling Khushi or they would file a lawsuit against them - the PH did tone down ASR's dark side after that threat.

After that, every single track has received such vociferous commentary that even Nissar's initial avowal about narrating a story as he thought fit and not pay attention to viewers' howling, did not withstand such negative force. As powerful a tool as the internet is in bringing people together, it is just as lethal in its destruction. Mind u, the PH's pathetic PR team simply did not help matters either.

Looking forward to the curtain call sooner rather than later.

Fame... a boon or bane...ideal case study material...

Maybe they needed to experiment with diff modes of engaging their volatile audience...

I am still not sure if the Channel/PH views this volatile audience as a nuisance value or a necessary evil. If its the former....i guess they are going about it the right way...just ignoring all attempts....the fandom can keep crying but what has to happen will happen but if its the latter...their modes of engagement are really strange......
anyways we will know shortly...the real litmus test....whether the online audience is worth any pain? hehehe

    7. Aki,

I agree with you that the show has been a victim of its own fame and popularity. I think after the kidnapping knocked the original story for a toss, Gul could never tell her story the way she wanted to or planned, and at some point, maybe when QH was finalised, she just gave up. Like mads said, all the tracks after the kidnapping have been half-hearted and badly done, and so many of the old loops, like Shashi babu's illness, the attempts on Anjali's life ... all have been swept under the carpet.

  6. i liked the epi... a decent one and actually hats off to the team for putting up quite a good show despite the non stop off screen drama!

i have only one complaint though, why cant barun shave his ugly beard? ASR kam, Devdas zyada lag raha tha! is that his new look for his next movie for which he is apparently quiting *wink*

whether or not he quits/takes leave/whatever... at least for the few epis he is here, cant he look... handsome tho door, DECENT!!

i'm so waiting for his exit, how are they gonna show it... no hints of anything so far onscreen... will it be like gopi vhau, character vahi.. actor nayi(naya)!!

Read amarb: A hilarious take! Read the whole post- total rofl-worthy!

"All the facial hair that ASR is growing is going to change him completely. He is going to let his inner true self come out.. So now imagine all this... ASR with full beard.. Cant see anything but his eyes.. standing in front of a mirror. ASR takes the shaving cream and spreads it on his beard.. He takes his razor on his right hand starts shaving his left side.. camera shows only eyes and forhead... slowly as the hair goes out ASR sees himself of who he really is.. This is viraf Patel...
This is the biggest character growth in ASR... Taller, bulkier and a new face and new him..."

I have a bad feeling this might happen.
      1. Apparently Suzanna (SP's IPK lady)said the character is more important.
      2. Sanaya said personally, she does not think anyone can fill Barun's shoes, but she has no problems doing romantic scenes with any actor. (Please, please, please, let me have read her wrong here. Please.)
      3. The various spoiler girls have been coming out with the 'plead with them to save the character' aandolan.

I still have a faint hope Viraaf is here to play some other character, but then, why does Arnavji have a beard?

      Delete
    2. ROFL, Su ... that would be classic ... BS as Arnav goes inside the bathroom to shave ... and comes out clean-shaven, taller, heavier and with a new face - Viraf! Instant plastic surgery - no accident required either!

Sanaya also said that no one other than Barun can play Arnav. I am clinging to that ... and also to the fact that if a new ASR comes, they still need a story to take the show ahead. Unless they really plan to wrap it up with the new Arnav.

I wish the spoiler girls would quit ... they are the ones who have messed up the entire situation! Barun's break would have remained a break, while they sorted out the off-screen issues peacefully. Now they are all running ragged to contain the wrath of the fans, and the actual issues will get ignored.

      Delete
    3. Just read article THAT is exactly what will be portrayed...........BS goes into the bathroom for a shave & out walks Viraf.

      Wonders never cease........siiiiggggghhhhhhhhh.

      Delete
  7. I think I'm watching a different IPK altogether... can't pinpoint what exactly, but suddenly its different than what I've watched so far... good/bad, I don't know! Or maybe its because I've watched after such a long time and there's this offscreen stuff going on which is much more dramatic than the show... every episode now I search fro signs that show me that BS as arnav is going to make an exit or wait for the episode when BS makes an exit so that I can finally decide whether to watch the show or not...

Ignoring the fact that khushi is actually participating in a fashion show instead of a cookery show (which is her talent), what I can take away as positive from this track is the importance given to make khushi seek her own identity (I am reminded of the time gunjan auditioned for the movies and wrote a beautiful letter to samrat regarding the same) ... if that's the case then I'm extremely happy, whoever be the hero of this show...

Although I don't want the show to end coz its a source of income for many ppl, I cannot watch khushi with any other actor as arnav... if they want to show a new character and attempt at developing their love story, fine by me.. but arnav-khushi should always remain that... Viraf is a decent actor, infact very spontaneous and expressive, I saw some of his clips and he might make a good pair with Sanaya, I am not denying that, but as another character NOT as arnav - he doesn't have the mills and boon dark handsome look or the sharp features that Barun has and what makes him a class apart as ASR..

as for the Gul-Barun interview, I saw it...and without debating whether it was scripted or not, one thing came out pretty clear to me after Gul spelt it out in so many different words - khushi was never important to the story ... IPK was NEVER abt stra crossed lovers who found it difficult to come together... it was ALWAYS abt ASR.. it was not a love stry..it was a journey of this man called SR through his ups and downs in life...how the one woman he loves turns out to be the "saut" in his sister's life... how he wasn't able to love her... no wonder we never got any realisation of khushi's (except for during kidnapping, which was not in original story and had to be put in to cover up for Barun's absence), some moments depicting her POV, her emotions, her past.. infact when I think of retrospect, the versions of the IPK songs have always been sung by man...and its only rarely that they had a female rabba ve and a female version of IPK title song... it was always abt ASR and how his life revolved around these two ladies in his life ... and to some extent I sympathise with her, because if I am not allowed to tell a certain story my way, I will start losing interest in it too.. if hat Barun says is correct and he wanted to quit back in feb itself when the movie was offered to him, then in retrospect when I think, all the tracks before marriage were tightly scripted and well interwoven with all the characters...and after marriage there hasn't been ONE SINGLE track that has been truly complete and well scripted - there was GH stay, arnav's kidnapping, shyam slapgate, didi ki saut where the real downfall began (how ironical since this was supposedly the original story)..

    1. contd..

About Barun...I don't know what his real reasons/intentions are... I am way too bothered abt the decisions of certain ppl n my AD ad hope they know what they are doing...so to think of someone totally unrelated to me, is beyond me! I would like to wish him all the best for his endevours...I'm sure he will shine..

lastly, if what shweta and biraj has said abt Gul and co insulting SaRun is true, then all I want to say is Karma is a b****...it comes and bites u for sure...i have seen that happening with RP after MJHT and would LOOOOVE to see that happening to Gul if the story is true...

All said and done, although both SaRun (mainly Barun) needs a good PR managed or advisor/manager, they both are wonderful human beings from whatever little I know of them from interviews, so I know they will shine wherever they go henceforth.. :)

      Delete
    2. Madsie *hugs*

You spoke my 'dil ki baat'!!! I have also been remembering the MJHT and RP fiasco ... since I like Barun far more than I ever 'liked' RP (haha) ... I would be very sorry to see the same thing happen with him. If it happen with Gul, then it will serve her right. More and more I see Opti's words coming true ... the PH losing interest, the nonsensical tracks ... maybe I watched Geet only when those stupid tracks had started, which is why I never got hooked to it at all!

Many people have reported about the so-called showdown between Barun and Gul ... if that really happened, what was the need for that BS-Gul interview, where they were on apparently happy back-slapping terms? And for Sanaya to come out strongly in Gul's favour? When she has no personal reason to stay pally with Gul, she is SP's employee, not the PH's ... so she has no vested interest in keeping Gul happy.
That's why I feel that no one knows the entire story, it is useless to speculate and really not worth my while. My AD is busy enough without worrying about people I don't know at all!

      Delete
    3. Regarding onscreen drama ... I would actually like this track if they could do it properly ... a woman trying to find her place, her own self-respect and her independence, is a subject very dear to me. I liked it when they showed it in MJHT, and we were so disappointed by the ending, when Gunjan gives up the movie ... if this time it leads to Khushi becoming stronger, I will be happy to watch. But I have no faith in this PH ... Gul is not interested in Khushi, only in Arnav. The only time Khushi and her feelings got any importance was when Arnav was kidnapped. Now she has lost interest in the show ... one can see it from the quality of the sets, the extras, the shoddy writing ...

Viraf is a good actor, madsie, and he's very good-looking. Don't know what clips you watched ... I followed his show Kismet - it was a YRF show on Sony, limited number of episodes, based on Kane and Abel (a book I love), and Viraf played the suave sophisticated tycoon with a heart of gold to a T. He would be very well suited to the role of another business tycoon - I have seen him as exactly that. Kavs and I watched it, we used to discuss it, and we both loved the end when he dies - very touching and very well done.

Though I don't want to see him as ASR ... ASR/Khushi have to be BS/SI. But I don't mind watching him as a new character.

  8. Just watched the episode. It wasn't bad, just waiting to see the last of Barun. Have to say he is looking worse by the day. Maybe he goes into the bathroom after Khushi tells him to have as shave and comes out as a different actor. Anything seems possible. They seem to be keeping their cards close to the chest. The rest of the cast seem to be pulling together as best they can but it must be very hard to keep up the enthusiasm and energy.
I will watch until the end, but even my enthusiasm is not the same. My greatest pleasure is coming here to check all the comments and discussions.

    2. Hey Rekha
I am still hoping that maybe,Barun, will be persuaded to return after a break just to leave us with the good memories of Arnav and Khushi . I would then not feel so disappointed in him as I,do now. I know her has a life to,get on with, but I just feel sad that he can't wait until this show is finished.
I hope the exit is interesting, and maybe they will then drag us along and give us some razzle dazzle, with a new ASR. If they get some strong story lines going and start the romance off slowly, it may work.
      Lets wait and see.

  9. Hi Dia,

This week would mark the exit of ASR in the show for sure and with that I too would make an exit. This story has always fascinated me - The ASR who has golden heart but tough exterior and the chirpy bubbly girl Khushi who breaks through the barriers and reaches out to the Arnav hidden inside. Sad the story has degenerated this bad that now I don't have any hope whatsoever of it getting redeemed.

I would touch few points on why this episode didn't work for me and then would give my honest 2 cents on the whole SP-Gul-Barun fiasco.

    - Episode was blah to say the least. Now a days IPK just shoots at RM. There is no SUV, no car, no office. Sad that this serial showed the entry of the hero getting down from the helicopter. This shows clear lack of interest in the PH to shoot episodes in a decent manner. And given that IPK airs about 5-6 times a day and each episode I think gets paid about 8-10 lakhs depending on the timing, I can see only one thing. Gul is taking the money from IPK and pumping it in QH. Well to each its own. Maybe she feels QH is her next bread and butter and in that case I don't want to stick around this dead show for the 200 odd people who are slogging.

    - The auditions were pathetic. Seems like they good the extras and made them as models and the audition room looks like some spare room that has been converted to shoot this scene. You kidding me. The candle and wick show too showed competition for cooking but the difference is that they actually went an extra mile to make the competition look plausible. There were many stages in the competition and some were shot in India and the finale was in Singapore. Even the scenes that were shot in India were realistic enough. What the hell did they show in the show yesterday. The judges were pathetic and the extras were only that. Seriously I am surprised LM, Arshad and Sanaya are okay shooting this crap. It more of felt like some kids with camcorders shooting home videos. PH, you seriously think that with this episode you have people admiring your show. Nope sire. Who ever was still remaining in the boat to give you a chance - maybe for the 200 odd people who would be left jobless will definitely leave now. It is clear cut message from PH is that "This is what we will show - Want to take it , take it else quit"

    - I admit the reason I am sticking around is Barun - Sanaya. I want to see how they show the exit of ASR. Once they show the exit, I will do my exit.

    Continued in the next post.

  10. continued from previous

Nothing else I can write on the episode.Coming to the fiasco, here are where I think the 3 parties are going to heed and what can come their way.

PH/Gul - The PH has lost credibility. No 2 questions on that. Gul can portray what all she wants to say but the truth is stark clear and that Gul did have confrontation in open in front of media people and the way she insulted Barun/Sanaya is now an open secret. Almost everyone in the media knows it and everyone on online who are now the emerging group of audience in India/aboard knows it. Leave that. The way she is handling IPK right now without the shabby track is just enforcing the view.People in India who are TRP audience also are not going to give her a chance next time because basically like my friends mom was saying - What is the point of seeing her serials if she can't sustain a story ? And if Gul thinks only online viewers know about the PHs and who produces which show then she is severely mistaken. The common people too know which PH has done which shows earlier and IPK fiasco is going to haunt Gul for a long time to come. And I don't see the chances of her getting new shows on SP any brighter. SP may even pull off the plug on Arjun given that it has now removed all the reruns of Arjun on weekdays. So Gul loses and loses heavily.

SP:- Believe it or not SP is also going to take a huge hit due to this. Mind you this was the same SP which didn't think twice before it pulled plug on Tere Liye and showed Balaji the boot because they had differences in Ekta's storyline and theirs. Now you mean to say even after 10 days of this fiasco they couldn't get a small fish like 4Lions to come agree to their terms. What is it going to project. That SP can't handle a show and its success. The viewers especially international ones and the ones at SPA 12 Live are going to roast SP royally. I am sure if SPA 12 turns out to be a headache for the channel, the channel won't think twice to pull this show off and move on.

Barun :- All the media people know the reason Barun has made to quit. Barun has made a name for himself and there is no doubt that ASR is ASR because Barun portrays it that way. The fans may be angry that Barun is quitting in the middle but now given the storyline which is so pathetic, I think everyone knows the reason Barun is quitting. Forget that even the normal TRP audience are like "Why is he not leaving the show. What is left for him to do ?". Like my friends family which watch the serial only for Barun are actually happy that he is quitting the serial. My friends mom was like "Good, there is nothing much for him to do. Better he comes in another good serial". So I don't think he is going to be very much effected by this fiasco. He will recover and then bounce back. Now with the Gul experience, hopefully he would be wiser and would choose to stick with professional PHs and not with some PH like 4Lions. Also Barun can also see his Bollywood result before he takes up another show. One thing is for sure, He needs a PR person and that too pronto but I don't think this fiasco is going to harm him in his career. People have bounced back from bigger disasters and falling out with PH over creative differences is a very normal thing. So Barun would be able to bounce back in a better way is my gut feeling.

The SP and PH will have this fiasco hunt them in a long time. And like the PH is repeating "Karma is a bitch and what comes around goes around", I do hope that happens eventually.

For me - the show ends the day Barun exits and Viraf comes in as ASR(suicide for the show) or as a new character(manageable disaster for the show).

    Sorry for the long rant.

    ReplyDelete
  11. Sarada,

Long rants are welcome here ... everyone needs a place to vent!

Viraf will not come in as ASR ... I am 100% sure on that one. Not because audience may or may not accept him as ASR (they won't), but because there will be no story if there is no new character. The only way the show can continue is if there are new problems between Arnav-Khushi ... At the moment, Arnav is head over heels in love with Khushi and she with him. That equates to Happy Ending. Because the show is about Arnav-Khushi.

PH has lost interest in the show ... again agree 100%. Again I am sure about this, not only because of Barun leaving, but because AD and DP have also left and there has been no attempt to recruit new characters. Do they seriously think they can run a show with six people? Does SP seriously think the PH can run the show with six people? A big NO.

I don't know whether Barun wanted to leave himself, as HE has said in numerous interviews, so has Sanaya ... or he was pushed into leaving as you and so many other people insist. If there was a showdown on the sets, and media were present, how is it that the news is not out anywhere except on IF? It would be difficult to keep such things quiet if media were truly around. I can agree that Gul was upset because she is under pressure from SP to keep the show on, and BS wants to leave ... maybe there were harsh words also ... they have worked together for a year and a half, I'm sure everyone loses their temper on occasion.
Maybe what you say is the truth, but if Barun wants to play down the differences between him and Gul in public, for the sake of his own career, I am not going to play them up.

So I will stick to what I can see happening on screen in front of me - which is this:

CLEARLY the PH is not interested in the show any more. There are no two ways about that.

Barun wants a break ... that is his public statement and he is sticking by it. Maybe he wants the break because he wants to leave the PH and sign up with Star directly - like Sanaya (her job is not in jeopardy if the show ends) ... maybe he is fed up of the unprofessional way the PH works, with ALL the burden on the leads and no attempt at making any decent storyline ...

Star wants the show to go on ... and they will not announce their decision till after the UK trip. As I see it, the decision has been made ... but they will not announce the show's end because an actor is leaving, that will send wrong signals to the industry, and will be contrary to what they have enforced all along. They CAN however pull the plug very easily if the TRP's don't sustain.

If the PH has lost interest, and it clearly has ... TRP's will drop, because PH is doing nothing to retain viewers.

So once the TRP's return ... and if Barun insists on his leave and PH continues in this ramshackle half-hearted way, SP will find it easy to drop the show.

SP will recover from the fiasco. PH will not. Barun might be affected to some extent ...

Do I care about any of the above? Not really :)

Do I care about any of the above? Not really :)

I have already started watching some other shows, so have many of us here on this blog. And we also represent a fraction of the TRP audience ... a fairly big one, which doesn't care about off-screen drama, we care only about our entertainment. An IPKKND comes once in a while, but regular shows go on all the time.

And I don't know about people watching the serial only for Barun ... many probably do. But I think many more watch it for ASR, and ASR is gone. So those people will be happy to see him quit and watch him in a new show.

I watch it for Sanaya ... and there are many people who watch many shows because of the FEMALE lead, not the male. Which is why most shows have strongly etched female leads. And why a show like DABH has been doing so well, even though the actress is a disaster ;)

IF Khushi gets a good story after Barun's exit, I will continue watching. The only thing is, this story has never been about Khushi, it has always been tilted towards Arnav, he is Gul's favorite, and I don't think that will change, unless the PH changes.
So I will be equally happy if either it goes on with a strong Khushi, preferably with a new PH ... or it shuts down and Sanaya comes on another show.
If Barun comes on another show with her or with someone else, I will check out his show for sure, because he is a very good actor and I loved him as ASR. His test for me will be if I can love him as another character.

Agree with you. There was a war of words exchanged between Barun and PH and this has come from reliable sources. I am no fan girl of him and I don't hold out the torch for him. But since I know the source and know that she is telling the truth, I have no other reason to believe otherwise. And regarding why the media is not blowing it up, I think Star may have stopped them and this may be due to the SPL going on next week. Even Priya in her crooner thread also mentioned that the truth may start coming out after the SPL. So the whole dhamaka will be out after SPL is what I believe. Fine by me if Barun wants to keep quiet though for his sake I do hope he opens his mouth and takes a stand. This attitude of his is not going to help him in TV where it is dog eat dog logic that is followed.

SP will hold on to the show till this year end. It has lot more shows in pipeline and the only reason I feel they are holding on to the show is due to SPL 2012 and it is only due to Arnav - Khushi that they are having sold out shows. Once that is done, profit is reaped, SP will go on. Like you said Barun is a good actor - he can be your typical chocolate hero and at the same time he can be serious, dark and brooding ones. He will fit in any dignified role. So he too will move on I believe.

I am not sure the PH will concentrate on Khushi. The reason being Arnav's redemption was to show a strong Khushi - A Khushi who will not easily forgive Arnav for the hurt he caused her and thereby Arnav moving heaven and earth to get Khushi back into his life. Did that happen. Gul had a chance to give us that strong character during the redemption track. But all we got was a 5 min apology and Khushi saying "Hum sab jaante hai". There was the end of the character Khushi that could have demanded her pound of flesh in kind. The Khushi now you see is one who is head over heels in love with Arnav. That is the reason this whole I need to be something to prove to Arnav is falling flat for him. Didn't Arnav say to Khushi that he likes her as she is. What is the point in going for Mrs.India contest. Fine if she wants to prove something why not start the Dabba service again now that it was a legitimate business or why couldn't she take up Arnav' offer. I have no logical justification for Khushi taking up this Mrs.India contest and I don't think the story that is going to follow next is going to be logical enough.

The only way I see the story going forward is Viraf is going to be the guy who is going to fall for Khushi at the contest thereby either making Arnav Jealous(again doesn't make sense given that Arnav - Khushi have come a long way now) and going away or Khushi becoming successful and ignoring everyone and the family(again a destruction of the character).

Actually the TRP audience too is not able to connect to the storyline. The sets are shabby, the leads are in tacky dresses all the time and to top it they don't have a gripping story. PH can't run this story on the remaining characters once ASR marks his exit. I feel sorry for Sanaya. She is a talented actresses but she got stuck with the wrong PH. Unless a new PH steps in and rectifies the story in huge way and brings back the old characters, I don't see any chance of this show surviving.

I for time being am going to be in AD for a long time till something catches my fancy. Like Khushi says "sapno ki duniya mein hi rehna behether hai", I am going to follow it for sure. Will definitely drop in your blog whenever I can.

Hi and welcome to the blog.
May I reply to some of your Qs?

    This is what I feel.
Khushi need sto get a makeover done and the best way to get it done is through the ups and downs she faces in a show like this. I think that is way better than Anjali or Lavanya helping her out, this way, Khushi gets groomed professionally.

This is also an opportunity for Khushi to meet the other side of the world, in the form of the sarcastic judge and the backstabber friend. I agree the sets looked unimpressive, but the very fact that the PH went to the trouble of finding so many extras- I feel they will want to go ahead with the track.

On why Khushi did not take up ASR's offer- she needs to find her identity herself, not to undermine him in any way or to prove a point.

Anjali and nani have full faith in Khushi bitiya, why don't we as an audience agree she needs to follow what her heart tells her to do? It is not that she is attracted to the glitz and glamour, it is just an attempt on her part to see how well a small town girl like her can fit in. Like Dia, says, I am eagerly waiting to see if the CVs take this forward the right way to show some growth in Khushi.

On The offscreen drama, I share Dia's sentiments- I don't think Sanaya needed to come out and support Gul strongly in her interview. She could have just avoided it or given a diplomatic answer. The fact that she came out and sincerely supported Gul makes me want to believe a lot of the conspiracy theory is just the audience's over active imagination.

  14. Hi Su,

There are lot of ways of showing Khushi to be groomed or made look sensual and appealing. Heck Khushi was sensual in Diwali and appealing during the AR photo shoot. She could have tried out different clothes. Maybe could have tried out learning English. The way they picked up this contest shows the interest of the PH. Fine you pick up a track do full justice to it. Make sure that it does look like some auditions for Mrs.India contest. What is the point in getting a big room and shooting some video with some pathetic extras. That didn't gel well with me. Pick any track as long as you do justification to it. Take for example the AR photo shoot. It had only one model who was doing the photo shoot but still you got the feel that it was a photo shoot for a calendar going on. Honestly I didn't feel that yesterday. Felt more like the actors had some scenes written out and they came and acted.

For PH, if you showing a business tycoon show him like that - example the opening shot of ASR getting down the helicopter. Now do we see that kind of shots. Nope. If want Khushi to be a contestant on Mrs.India contest do show that. Make her groomed and well deserved. You give your leads some rainbow colors and just show the other people bitching about her - What do you want to show ? I am confused. Where is standing up here ? Where did making my identity gone?

PH - Want to go this track. Fine. Give a strong Khushi or else it is just pathetic and would be hard to swallow.

Regarding the offscreen drama - Maybe/May not be true. But the way the PH degraded the viewers intelligence with their forum32 outbursts I have no trust in them that they would honor the actors who toiled to make their show a huge success. Sanaya might have come out in strong support of Gul because she can't go anywhere. Even Barun who was unceremoniously dropped choose to not fight back because it would harm his career. Sanaya knows she needs to stick around for another 2 more months so no point in washing the dirty linen. If the PH and Gul were really not the ones who did wrong doings then a simple press conference regarding this issue would clear lot of perceptions in viewer's mind. The thing that PH is doing everything except the one that will exonerate them is making me believe they are in the fault party. Even Barun/Sanaya came out and no matter how harsh it might have been, they supported the PH and stood by their statements. Why the PH is not coming in open then.

I am done giving chances to the PH. IPK will be my last show from them and then I will never venture into any of the shows that are produced by these people.

    1. Sarada,
Sorry, I had to go off in a hurry after my last post and apologies for not even properly addressing it to you.

I feel this is what they are trying to show.
A small town girl enters a big time competition - the grooming happens during the process, in the next level.
At least that is how I have seen it happen in reality on a small scale. The contestants really look laughable during the auditions (I am not talking about Ms. India, but I bet this is how mami's Ms Lucknow contest went)- I agree they have not given the feel of a real Mrs. India which would be in a bigger scale. But I kind of liked both the judges- they seem to have some connection in the past. And the fox in disguise friend, Amrita. There is scope for some romance between the judges, back stabbing, bitching between the contestants and so on.

Actually this track could focus on Khushi and thereby take the limelight away from ASR- read- Barun will not be missed so much during his break- if they execute it well and show it as a girl's day out, into the big bad ugly world, her winning the battle without her husband's support. She ends up proving she is a woman of substance to the world, something Khushi needs to boost up her confidence with.

She could always take up ASR's offer and start wearing modern clothes to fit into the world (even if he claims he likes her the way she is, she feels like a misfit- hence the attempt to dress up modern for him on so many occassions. And that need is not going to go away.)

A photo shoot can show her wearing some nice dresses, but it does not change who she is or make her comfortable in adopting it as her daily wear. The experiences from a contest like this could change her. We keep hearing trom all the ex- Ms. Indias about how the grooming during the contest contributed in a big way towards the growth in their personalty. (Khushi is probably going to be the same Khushi by the end of the contest, most likely she will teach the judges and the contestants some lessons. I will be more than happy if she develops a better dressing sense in the process!)

Let us see how this track goes. I was not impressed with DABH cooking contest- a small time halwai goes on to become master chef- forget the believability of it, the track was too boringly predictable. Going by the standards of the most popular SP serial, honestly, all I am expecting here is a high school fashion show. If they show any thing more than that, given their limitations, I will attribute it to the POSITIVITY in the sets that Sanaya talked about. I don't know Gul or Sanaya or Barun personally, but they all come across as decent people to me.

And I will stick on to IPK, because I love watching Sanaya and I am really looking forward to seeing how the PH manages to hold the show together. We all want it to go off air, but SP does not seem willing to pull the plug yet. There is no point blaming Barun or the PH or anyone else for it, I feel. It might turn out to be a total flop show, but I am wiling to give it a chance- because I love IPKKND, warts and all.

And I will watch it for Sanaya more than Gul, I love her optimism.

Khushi is the epitome of love and love means forgiveness.
I never expected Khushi to be unforgiving. Yes, I expected a proper redemption track- once Arnav leaves her on the impact of the blast from the past (Garima being the other woman)- and realises his folly in a day or two- sets out to win her back...I believe that did not happen because the audience would not have forgiven Gul or SP if ASR ditched Khushi again. In a way, what Aki said is true- the popularity killed the show- we are responsible for a bit of this mess ourselves- our unkind remarks pushed GH into coming out with 'dekhna hai to dekho'.

    3. Su,

Love your optimism and hope you do enjoy the show. But for me the show is over when Barun is out. I started to watch this show for the star crossed love story it promised. Actually didn't watch the show from beginning. Started watching it from Guest house maha episode and needless to say I was hooked. But progressively the character of Khushi has been butchered beyond repair. I frankly don't have any hopes of the creatives redeeming the character. But for your sake, let's hope they do give a strong Khushi after this Mrs.India contest. And mainly I do hope they give Khushi a better wardrobe after this competition. I am sick of seeing Sanaya wearing those horrible tents and multi-color rainbow suits. Just give her some beautiful costumes, sarees or tops.

The love story is gone when you remove either Arnav or Khushi are gone. No 2 questions on that. By default it also means the show is gone when either Barun or Sanaya quit. So I think this time around I would be wiser and quit once Barun goes off. I had suffered with this PH before when I stuck with Geet and I don't want to be taken for ride second time around. Geet was a good example of how a good serial can be butchered to an extent that you no longer see the same one in the end. IPK sure is going to be next example.

I am fine with the PH thinking. Maybe for them IPK gave the profits and time to move on. Just issue a damn statement and move on. Believe me it would give the PH back some credibility. That's what all the viewers are asking too.

Okay then So long. Hope you do enjoy the show. I know Dia from IF and we used to discuss this show to no end and all my weekends used to spent in discussing/dissecting the scenes and promos. Sad that this serial is dying this bad. But I will take the good memories and depart. For what all its worth, IPK did get me back to my Teen years when I was first introduced to the M&B books and kudos to Barun/Sanaya for portraying the characters to the T.

  15. episode review:
arnav wants khushi to head his fashion show team.. it will be "her baby". why ASR? you're not sticking around enough to give her a real baby? ohh i get it, you are a shatir dimaag.. no need to deal with pregnancy hormones or baby-induced insomnia.. you gave her a grown up son (instant family) and a project as a baby.. (applause)

khushi does not like that she is given perks as the boss's wife.. she wants her own name. (did you notice how the "Mrs india" scenes have swallowed up the singh raizada part?) so KKG is going to participate in the contest. halla bol. full behenji style. whats wrong with that?

forget for a moment that the sets are not what they are. imagine the platform of the actual Mrs India auditions. (yes, TV and Youtube forget nothing) http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=a1eBTHZMvWw
(yes sarada, the first photoshoot actually looked like a photoshoot.. not expecting that to happen now)

the contestant-wannabes are waiting, this girl in her anarkali and everyone else in western wear. (forget the fact that they all have sindoor to prove that they actually have the MRS degree) there is gonna be the hifi-vs-behenji dialogues, that is a given in IPK.. every time ... dont know their fixation with that particular dirty dialogue, but well.
yeah, khushi is middle class.. but a lot of the other girls there looked middle class too.. care to elaborate on that?

the judges.. one ex model(instantly reminded me of Cathy Morningside in miss congeniality) and a current 'too cool' model. one applicant gets rejected for having a passion for fashion, another gets rejected for not having a passion for fashion. as they go in the next, next, next mode, i am struck by how pretty the anchor looks. and khushi is shown through the soft focus lens, all dewey beauty.

while the general feel of the old AR office is recreated, we suddenly hear the gusht of wind. vo aagaye? (insert ASR music) i'm anticipating the freshened arnav(because that's why he went home for the second time in the day) and phisss ey lo! look what the cat dragged in!!! bwoy, go get a cut n shave, or they wont let you in... the swagger and dripping gel is not enough to go into esteemed halls where girls are being chewed raw and spit out! (ugh. my pet peeve.. multimillionaires can walk whichever way they please! )

and the judge who hated khushi on first look has already dismissed her (as she started a ramble about "amma kehti hain.." girl, can you be more behenji than that?)

looking around a the actual Mrs India competition, i am heartened..
    http://www.gladrags.in/mrsindia_2012_bengaluru.php
    http://www.gladrags.in/mrsindia_2012_finale_north.php

so maybe khushi can win it... but if Mr Raizada is a co-host, it disqualifies Mrs Raizada's entry, right?

  17. Read all the comments above.....didn't know the space where the comment i am about to make belongs to...becos its not a response to any post just a bit of rambling

    1) The point of Character being greater than the actor in a story is a very important one and IPK was the ideal story to drive home the point...but i use the past tense here becos the story teller and the medium (whatever may be the compulsions) surrendered the advantage to the actor thus making the actor as important as the character if not bigger by NOT telling the character's tale when there was the opportunity...

So a lay viewer like me ( less than a passionate fan but more than a disinterested viewer) has gone on to believe that BArun is ASR and ASR is Barun...well heck? how did that happen...becos when the channel and Ph were mucking around with the storyline, i was impatiently waiting for a ray of hope that i might see the actual story peeping thru...but in the process i remain impressed with whatever these two actors namely SARUN put up on screen....so much so that they went on to have a vice-like grip on my heart and today i cannot accept any other actor romancing Khushi....if is silly,i know i am not the cause for this silliness....

Secondly becos it is hypothetical, i don't know if my feelings would have been the same if Barun was replaced in Feb this year and the Ph had gone on to tell their story...in the way they apparently wanted. If i were to conjecture, i would have been upset to see BS go but the story would have kept me in thrall!! such was the power in the narrative!!

However, since its a lot of water under Thames, i am not sure if my feelings will remain the same if the real story is now going to unfold ...why? becos i am a viewer whose patience has suddenly run out and the maker would have to work to get back my attention(this is a rhetorical point becos no one cares if i get my story or not or whether I watch IPk or not)...just a point that i wanted to make on how timing is of essence in these matters.

Obviously we are all different types of viewers, we will watch for different things...but the only common thread, if i carefully see one in the IPK experience is that of a different sensibility of audience that a marketer can tap and use as a sounding board for future experiments, ofc that is, if they care...

    1) Even if BS was available, IPK could not have gone on for ever...how long can a love story be on screen before it genuinely runs the course...1 year...ok make it 2 years...unless u want it to be IPK turned YRKKH.....
so the lessons for the channel would be
    a) what are the various rev models that they can tap into
    b) what is the captive audience that they stumbled upon in the IPK exp and what they can do to get more mileage a
    and such other things....

If this audience matters,(now, i am having doubts abt it too) their modes of engagement with this audience has been strange in the current fiasco.....
one official statement and what does Suzzana Ghai say...."the character is bigger than the actor" is that the point of debate in the first place?...time will tell...until then it is power to the remote....freedom of choice....

All the best to Barun...was thoroughly entertained by him when he was on screen, whether looking his best or his worst....*wink*
I am happy that his next outing is going to be diff from the ASR character...nothing like staying away from being typecast...
I called him a destiny's child becos of the extremes of adulation and abuse that he has received in a short while..being tested even while being blessed...a paradox only a few are subject to....
seems to need a bit of help to manage his off-screen avatar...but nothing that experience and time in the limelight can't teach him....So, BS..go get it...
    All the best god bless!!

  18. Rekha,
Loved your post! I have stopped watching the show completely. In my view, the story has already been told. The remarriage of the leads was a closure of the story that Gul Khan and co. intended to tell all along. The fact that they could not tell the story their is another issue. I am no longer bothered about the fate of the show now. If it is able to last for some more time, well and good, and if not then I hope they wrap it up on as high note. Whichever way they choose to do it I think the CVs know better. I have no problem with Barun Sobti leaving the show now, I just feel he should have done it way back in February and another guy could have portrayed the character of Arnav Singh Raizada. It would have been an issue then also but maybe the audience would have accepted the other actor with time. But to think of someone else as Arnav Singh Raizada now is unthinkable! Even then, if the CVs have not rushed the past track I would have still been watching the show with/without Barun Sobti. That was the sole reason I stuck to watching the show through the bad phase. But as of now, I feel there is no more reason to keep watching the show. Of course, I've had a great time watching the show for thae past year or so. It will always be one of the love stories that I shall cherish (another being DDLJ). Hats off to Gul Khan and co. for the beautiful story and hats off to Barun Sobti and Sanaya Irani for the beautiful portrayal!

Ayesha, I have started watching all the episodes on Youtube starting from the beginning and I was struck by how handsome and FRESH Barun looked in those episodes...check out this episode....this one is when Khushi confronts Arnav and hands over her resignation after the guest house incident.....this is the story that we fell in love with...the Khushi and Arnav that we could not wait to watch......Barun and Sanaya have played the characters so beautifully, but it was more than just each of them individually....it was them together....the sum being greater than the individual parts.....watch the expression on Barun's face as he feels regret and remorse for what happened at the guest house, and the thought of what could have happened to Khushi if he had not got there to save her on time.....but at the same time, he offers her his hand, possibly to declare some kind of truce, but he does not bargain for her to slap the resignation in his hand! The expressions on their faces ring so true....no wonder we vested all this emotion into these two characters until the lines blurred and we could barely differentiate between ASR/Barun or Khushi/Sanaya.....
