Miscellaneous Musings

Caught a couple of other shows during the last few days.

Surprisingly, I liked the one episode I saw of Kya Hua Tera Vaada - a drama dealing with infidelity. Will follow it up when I can. Mona's boss is the guy who played the father in Aapki Antara, which was a very, very good show - the best researched show on a medical issue that I have ever seen on Indian telly. So it totally prejudiced me in favour of KHTV as soon as I saw the guy's face :))

Saw a couple of episodes of Madhubala, - not very impressed - it seems to be a copy of Om Shanti Om at the moment, with gender reversal and a bit of mish mash - Madhu's sister is the one with dreams, but her scenes are very reminiscent of SRK in OSO. Also the chawl sets and the general look gives a feel like a 70's BW movie. Acting is okay, not bad, but nothing that leaps out at you so far. It may pick up though - it's barely a few weeks old.

Punar Vivah is one I am following - one can watch a couple of episodes a week and get the gist of the story, and I like the focus on the kids rather than the wicked saas-bua angle. I watch while browsing online and it's decent. Acting is just okay, though. I like the youngest brother, he has improved since his LNMDJ days.

Phir Subah Hogi - I need to catch up, read the updates, and it appears they are planning a Vikram-Sugni romance. Want to see how that goes - I love Varun Badola. Sugni is good. I have seen a show with Narayani earlier, she's another decent actress.

Caught up with an episode of Parvarish - I enjoy it! The typical Punjabi families, their way of speaking, the humour in the dialogues - it's a fun watch. Nothing addictive the way a good love story is, but good fun and very entertaining. And the acting is good!

  1. I watch Punar Vivah, Madubala and Phir Subah Hogi. I agree that PV is slow moving. I too love the show for its focus on the kids but I like the acting of Kratika and Gurmeet. The rest of the cast are also good. What I don't like is the background score they play. Did not realise how much that matters in enhancing or ruining the moments in the story. Madhubala had a very strong start when the mother was escaping a blood thirsty husband to give birth to her baby girl whom he thought would bring his downfall. At present the story is just meandering. Hope it picks up. Of the three I like Phir Subha hogi the most. It is interestingly poised at the moment. I think we will see the gradual changing of Vikram Thakur turning into progressive shades of grey even as his nephew will slowly turn white. It would be more interesting to see a more layered character for Varun than just a simple man in love with a young bubbly girl from an inferior caste. Do you still follow NBT? At present it seems to be going through a rough patch with some shoddy script and direction but the last episode was more promising. I am quite impressed with Kunal's acting. Did not think much of his looks but find him cute in his smitten look. Needless to say my favourite is Nanhi, the little girl who is so excited that her spiderman will soon be her papa. I don't this show will last very long though. The pace at which they are moving seems to indicate it will not go beyond Sep-Oct at the most.

  2. Dia,
Kya Hua Tera Vaada is our Mona's mom's serial.
Remember she talked once about things moving very fast in her mom's serial when we were all cribbing about IPK.

I feel it is a good story.
I like it better than BALH.
The other Sony serial I used to watch was Saas bina sasuraal.
I hope they are still keeping up the good work, been some time now.

    Madhubala- will be average, watchable.
I felt the female lead is very pretty, reminds me of the late South Indian actress, Soundarya(she died in an aircrash at the peak of her career.)

PSH- I too have great hopes from this show.

PV- Will have ups and downs. Will not be consistent. Right now it is very interesting. The post wedding scenes got on my nerves when the MIL was going on about Aarti looking after Yash's physical needs. Once would have been OK, she went on and on - put me off the show for a long time.
Warning you, when the romance comes you will switch off.
Little girl Payal is back. Odd, I used to think they were twins, apparently not.

BTW, have you ever watched Baalika Vadhu?

  3. Opti ... I am watching NBT off and on. I missed all the episodes with the Mohan proving Amar's innocence and getting shot drama. Now saw a couple where Megha's FIL agrees to getting her married again, and I believe there is a new entry for the purpose. I too like Nanhi and her Spiderman the best ... the heroine is pretty but not a great actress, the hero is much better.

Su ... the female lead of Madhubala - Dhrashti - I liked her a lot in DMG, always felt she was better than the lead actress, so was happy when she got a lead role as Geet. I didn't like Geet ... tried it a few times, but got put off every time ... sorry, Opti, I know you loved the show, so did a couple of my friends from DMG forum, and I did give it a try mainly for them ... but I just never took to it. But I liked the offscreen segments of both Gurmeet and Dhrashti, that's why I gave PV a try, and I find it okay, watchable in small doses, and skipping all the saas bahu drama.
Madhubabla so far is reminding me very strongly of OSO ... I didn't see the first few episods, just caught the last couple, where Madhu puts off the ladke valas who have come to see her sister - a very been-there-done-that kind of scene ... and one where Trishna is dreaming in front of this big film poster - total copy of OSO! But I know Dhrashti is a good actress, so I will follow it off and on to see if it picks up.

BV - saw a lot of it when my mom was here, as she loved it ... the garish costumes put me off big time!!! I like some of the senior actors and the Dadisa is very good ... my mom tells me it was great earlier because they tackled a lot of real issues very nicely ... my mom and I are majorly into social causes, especially women's issues. But now it seems to have dwindled into a usual love story, and apna ArHi are far better than any other love story on TV!

KHTV - just watched one episode so far :) That review was based on that one ... but it did interest me enough to want to watch more.

    1. Dia, the episodes leading up to Mohan proving Amar's innocence were very good. The strong emotions which were displayed from both sides were a great watch but there was a subsequent slump in the script and direction. Last week's episodes were not so great except the one on Friday. Yep, Akanksha (the female lead) is good looking but needs to improve in the acting department, especially in emotionally charged scenes. She tends to screech and grimace too much.

It is sad you did not take to Geet. I think you must have started watching when the show was going downhill. The best period of that show was June to Nov 2010. There were bursts of brilliance after that but the story went downhill.

Diya aur Bati is now looking up. I don't know when they will come to the main crux of the story - Sandhya working towards achieving her dream of becoming an IPS officer. It is still kitchen politics but now that the MIL has come to know Sandy's innocence and is warming up to her, I hope they start off in that direction. What I like about the show is that the CVs never leave any loose ends. They come back to open loops and diligently close them. One such scene which was shown very early in the show was the hero leaving a sweet box next to the herione when he sees her studying under a street light. He did not see her face then and neither did she. So he did not know that he had ended up marrying that mystery girl.Recently they revisited this scene when the hero and herione cross that place and he recounts the incident to a shocked wife who then has fund teasing him for leaving the box because he had a crush on the 'girl'. I so wish our CVs have as good as memory as that to tie up the various loose ends in our show. One of them could be Arshi reliving the fateful Diwali night during this Diwali and Arnav coming to know just how much he had hurt her that night. (hope the channel does not close down the show by then)

    2. I have seen only bits of DABH,maybe a sum total of only 1 hr at best....but eager to know the connect for rural India (TRP audience, i presume or am i wrong here) for this story....for intents and purposes, it is just like any S & S saga....so whats diff for them . Since main track is not yet on...as per Opti's info....whats the draw for the public?just curious....i have no opinion coz i don't know anything abt it

    1. Dia,

Sriram and Anwesha are my favs too! Keep seei ng JJWS and DID from time to time cos mom watches and updates me offline otherwise

KHTV also she watches and I have been seeing snippets of this and NBT last week cos I was in front of TV waiting for my baby to go off to sleep. I liked what I saw in both.

NBT I watch for the character Mohan and Nanhi - a totally timeless relationship and both actors are good. Opti I agree Kunal acts pretty well as Mohan. Plus Guru Mohan bromance is adorable.

When I can, I loves Parvarish - totally hilarious show with a bit of messaging here and there. And very real to life lovable characters. My personal fav is "Sweetyji" :)

Saas Bina Sasural used to watcyh off and on once upon a time but now have no time at all for it.

PV and PSH hmm again someties see glimpses on weekends but nothing addicts me as IPK :)

    3. How did Aneek get dropped in favour of Akanksha? I just saw bits yday..

Anwesha sings really well. Shreeeam in very tensed compared to his Indian Idol days..

    4. I just watched the classical songs episode of Saturday, haven't watched the Sunday one, Anwesha was brilliant in that, I felt the judges gave Akanksha extra grace because they knew she wasn't trained.

Aneek lost out on votes, although I do think he's a better singer than Akanksha. He left very gracefully :) Sweet guy!

In a way I'm happy because all the previous singing shows have been weighted heavily in favour of the guys, girls rarely got to the finals.

Anwesha is my favorite too. Shreeram has not been so good here as compared to Indian Idol.

Just watched the SBS with Mohit's film party - his heroine is pretty! And Sanaya was on a roll :D

    5. Dia,

Have not been able to watch JJWS, with family visiting...it was a call between IPK and JJWS...obv IPK won hands down....luckily for me my sis-in-law is an avid IPK fan...so we both took out time watching it....

ON JJWS, i actualy like Irfan a lot and second best is Anwesha....(in this show...she is doing a lot lot better than her earlier one..which was won by Aishwarya) with Anwesha, the voice timbre is such that it may not sound great on all songs....I loved in that Anamika number....her voice quality IMO was perfect for that song..she needs more breath control on her voice....

True, Shreeram is looking less confident this time around and somehow i feel the response of judges this time around is making him feel that way....comments have less than obejctive at times....Swanand esp.....too many pre-conceived notions can mar judging...

    6. Btw Dia, even i caught the SBS today after long time....whats with film heroines making debut acting all hoity-toity when sharing limelight with successful TV actors...first ST did it, now this Mohit's co-star is doing that....

and I tell u that SI is the limit...she is happily telling that girl...Its ok, u don't have to tell anything abt me....she is a riot, yaar....i just love her....

    7. Rekha, even the director was hilarious - apni heroine ko push karke he was getting Sanaya into the frame, saying she is also in the film, she's doing an invisible guest appearance!!! :D :D :D
And bechari Sanaya was getting all embarrassed and trying to get away from the limelight, and Mohit and the director were not letting her! She was hilarious!!! Totally upstaged the heroine, without even wanting to!!! That Raina was NOT happy!!! Although she had to admit to watching Sanaya's show - she or her mom ... better than ST who claimed she didn't have a clue!

But I thought that heroine was quite pretty - better choice for Mohit than that wannabe Shenaz T for Barun!

    8. ok.i missed that director part...beech mein se dekha.....have to agree ....Mohit is luckier than BS in that respect of film heroine.....Her name is Raina, is it? nice name, pretty face...she said she had seen Sanaya once or twice....yeah yeah...don't we know how busy these girls are.....to her credit she remembered her manners and quickly said my mom watches her and that she is beautiful...
