9/5 - Epi 28 ... Nautanki Baa

Thursday 9th May

Uma Ben straight into nautanki mode ... locks herself into room and refuses to emerge.

Manav is a dikra ... sends one SMS to the love of his life, and proceeds to camp outside his mother's room the whole night. Okay, no further expectations from him ... Ahem number 2. And his acting just plummeted again ... Farhan, you need to find an alternate profession ... fast. Acting is not your cup of tea.

Hitesh is the smarter one ... realising UB's potential for trouble, he has already arranged to transfer self and wife to Baroda. End of Purvi's cameo. But did he not think to inform Purvi or CC that Manav is UB's son? Might have helped CC understand why UB suddenly hates her even more.

CC's family teases CC about Manav ... arey, all that is well and good ... but first find out more about the boy in question, and his family ... especially his family. You might decide to transfer CC to Baroda with Purvi!
Vaise, Sanaya's expressions were cute ... but I couldn't help feeling ... all this for that guy? What a waste!

UB's family ... we get to see all the sons and the bahus ... Manthan is definitely a trouble-maker, and not so obedient a son as the other two.

And UB gets ready for her nautanki ... she is on her death bed ... and of course wants Manav to be married to girl of her choice before she dies.
Can I hope she succeeds, and in comes a fifth brother ... the Handsome Munda we were wishing for, to take his place with CC?

IPK mentioned
Now can fans ask for IPK 2 please? Minus a hero who is going to go brain dead after six months/ go AWOL/ take 11/25/45 DAYS leave for movie shoot ... basically I want the Sanaya-Viraf story that was planned, as an IPK Season 2 ... or as a brand new show a la Punar Vivah 2 ...
If SP had any sense, they would start planning that one ASAP, and sign up Sanaya in advance already. If they had any sense, they would have done it already ... IDIOTS!!!!!

  1. Most could predict Uma Ben will pull this "last wish" stunt...no surprise there.

Hitesh did not tell CC about Manav's connection to Uma Ben because he thought she already knew, but then again...ok...black hole there.

Four dikhras-present, three bahus- present, one bauji- gone to Bombay, but where is the dhikhri? Phir over-night camping chali gayi?

That reminds me why have a tatoo making sister, who is so busy, she is missing in every family scene.

Sanaya's expressions were nice, but wish the scene conceptualization is better...uska koi message nahi aya, lo behold text arrives, now did you not expect it? Also, please dialogue writerji we know CC is all this and that, someone or the other does not have to repeat it in each episode! And stop talking in unison for emphasis.

Vipul Shah is story and screenplay writer, maybe he can hire a younger writer to assist, right now scenes look dated.

Dia, I am not trying to be over critical, but just putting down things, which can be worked on. The FK problem may or may not leave, but these other things can be looked into.

BTW, I did leave feedback for SONY.

Yesterday was good, today they prepared us for the next drama of Uma Ben. Right now, she is the most interesting character in the show.

So, "Purvi ki Shaadi" project done, now onto "Chhanchhan ki shaadi" next. We ladki waalis are ready with our stitched sarees!

    1. Uma,

I have been leaving feedback for Sony every day too ... I strongly feel that while good screenplay and direction is very important for a show, good acting can help to gloss over some of the loopholes. Case in point - Sanaya as Khushi. And vice versa - case in point, DABH! But here we have weak acting AND weak screenplay, and unfortunately weak acting is by a lead, who is not a dikra and does have a role to play ... or should!

Just look at the Wednesday episode - very little Manav, it was ALL Supriya, Sanaya and the supporting cast of Hitesh, Purvi, Himanshu, Simple ... Manav was just supporting cast that day, he had no dialogues. And the episode was GOOD. If he stays that way, the show will be watchable ... one can ignore him.

Yesterday there was too much of Manav ... and he cannot handle it! And it drags down the entire episode. I quite enjoyed the brothers' scene ... they are interesting as well, and I'm looking forward to the family dynamics and politics once CC enters that house.

Sanaya's scene was good ... I agree they need to stop emphasizing how wonderful CC is, but in every show on TV they do just that ... have been watching PKDH and Veera, and the same thing happens there too, though a little more subtly in Veera.

    2. I agree Dia, I really hope they reevaluate their choice of male lead, but somewhere I feel we are stuck with this block of wood. That is why my only hope is with writers and production team.

Today's SBS clearly showed what other actors think of his acting and blinking. So, creatives hopefully are not in some la la land thinking this guy will eventually work out. This is the best he can do, he will not become a thespian with time!

Have to add today's SBS will be another tool to criticize Sanaya for putting down her co-actor, even though she was trying to stop Srman :((

Wondering if I should ask this question, it is too early and nobody has a crystal ball, but does this show have sustaining power, with all current problems it is plagued with?
I hope this show is at least a decent hit, and Chhanchhan another memorable character for Sanaya.

    3. After watching the SBS, when they made so much fun of FK, and then again said he might be changed, I am still hoping .... have to wait till IPL ends to see what happens. If even his co-actors don't spare him, the PH should realise they have a problem on their hands. Not that shows with poor acting don't work ... they do - take DABH and Sandhya, YRKKH and Naitik, even PKDH, Pankhudi was pretty wooden at the start, and even now she is no great shakes. But after Sanaya's last hit show with such great acting by the pair, the tolerance of Sanaya fans for poor acting is much lower. If the usual saas bahu audience takes over, then FK won't matter in the long run ... but for that, the ChhanMan marriage has to happen quickly so that the family drama can start full time.

I have completely stopped reading all Sanaya critics posts ... they are really not worth my time! Let barking dogs bark! Srman was hilarious, though ... poor Sanaya was trying to stop him, but she was cracking up! This should really ring alarm bells for the PH - a love confession scene evoking such a reaction is really not good news!!! :)))

As for crystal ball ... call me optimist, but I still feel that once the marriage is done and CC is in the Borisagar house, things will improve. The show is a bit dated ... but CC is contemporary ... a good mix. The actors are all decent to good - bar one, of course! It will depend on what kind of issues they bring up too. Except for the male lead, I don't see too many major problems with the show, none that can't be sorted out in time.

Also, as far as Sanaya is concerned ... which is my main concern in the first place ... I think she will emerge okay even if the show doesn't do too well. I would think it will go on for about a year, more if things improve. TRP's after IPL ends will give a better picture, but even its predecessor, HJNH, went on for six months with lower TRPs, and was shut down more because of problems with the leading lady. And even if it fails, Sanaya has tried something different, HER acting is being praised all through, it's the other factors which are coming under the scanner, and I think she will retain her goodwill in the industry all right. So if and when it shuts down, she will bounce back soon enough. I believe SP is still courting her ... if that news is true, then no worries for her.

  2. question: are the creatives trying to get FK replaced by trying to badmouth him in sbs etc? maybe because they know that its not gonna happen in the normal flow of things? like.. if he is the boss's son, who can dare ask him to quit?

    1. Don't know ... don't care. Hope so ... FK is not really any concern of mine, except that he is bringing down Sanaya's show. If he can't shape up, he should ship out.

    2. jaya lag to aisa hi raha hai,lol.........And I am guessing FK must have boasted about his family connections and now people are pointing out be as it may be currently tumhara aur acting ka door door tak connection nahin hai.

  3. Sabotage!Good point Jaya. Though I am getting a feeling the PH is deliberately burying its head in sand...low TRPs, lukewarm reception, tons of feedback and nothing is improving! At least get one thing in order either script and screenplay or your male lead, both together are too much of a dead weight for Sanaya and Supriya to carry.

A theory just came to me...creatives and FK have messed up the romance so much that the audience is just where the PH wanted it to be. Most can't wait for the saas bahu clashes to start and don't want any lovely-dovey scenes anymore! If there is any IPK hangover or need to see any chemistry, that just DIED this week!

One more thing...right now I feel, this show should end in little over a year. Creatives should bring a sensible and logical end and not try to keep stretching tracks. A year is a decent landmark for a show nowadays. Then, Sanaya can do JDJ, next year and after that take up another challenging role! By then she will be done with "saas-bahu" genre, so she can take up something else. People will also,by then, get over Khushi hangover.

[Punar Vivah is winding up its first season in 15 months because the producers feel the current story is over. The next season will come with new actors and story. A good, amicable way to end a show, and actors and PH can move to other projects. Wish more PHs opt for this model]

See, I have planned Sanaya's next two years! ;)) Either this or CC becomes a chart topper and bags all awards!

    1. ROFL Uma ... I feel the same ... the cv's have messed up the romance so much that nobody wants any romance any more! They all want FK off the screen and more of Sanaya-Supriya! The two ladies have far more chemistry and definitely seem to get along with each other far better than the ML!

And I really wish more PH's and channels would opt for the limited episodes format - it would make for far better story-telling. And they should have a script of the show from start to end before they start filming ... of course tracks may change depending on TRP's and audience feedback, but the basic story outline should be chalked out at the start.
Having said that, it seems from what Sanaya and Supriya have said in their interviews, that the basic storyline after marriage IS chalked out already ... that is what the two signed up for. It's only this getting married part that is being worked on last minute.

    2. Uma and Dia: We all are waiting for the marriage to get done and over with. Then let us hope for the best.....Nautanki mummy is too much and Not-Yet-Dikra itna bhondu, ufffffffff....

ps - He has a long way to go before he qualifies to be a dikra, Bitwa toh bahut zyaada door ki baat hai.

    3. Shweths, Bitwa is one and only one, yaar ... bhondu is nowhere close. Hope after marriage the cv's send him off to Siberia where Bitwa's brain went for vacation and never returned ... or hope he gets a movie and goes off for 11/25/45 days ... somehow I doubt there will be calls to retain him :)))

  4. Two interesting articles in HT this weekend ... seem to indicate that channels are looking seriously at ways of changing the daily soap format. The Indian equivalent of 24 Hours is to be shot completely before it starts airing.
    Added to main post.

  5. c'mon dia, SP does not need khushi to lead their ship.. they have bhabo and koki.. (snort)

seriously though, i was reading up on the *origin of indiaforums* last day.. how they wanted it as a platform for interaction of fans and the TV creatives. starting in 2003(?) they were part of the geet uproar.. and i think they did play a big part in the solidification of indian telly fandoms.

and now that fandom and their opinion does indeed affect the opinion of the creatives as well as channels, and tv creatives are acknowledging that fans catch their episodes online (even when they are uploaded illegally), the idea of starplayer or sonylive makes good sense.

but how can they cash in on such online popularity? in YT or any other online video site, advertisements mean nothing. you cannot advertise with normal two-minute jingles online.. so how can a producer make money off an internet-based product? can they charge money for online subscription to their channel? is that even feasible?

    1. Jaya, I guess they could make money the same way that most online portals do ... by selling advertising space. If you see Facebook, Google etc, you see ads on their pages, which are linked to key words or discussions ... Producers can make available their shows online, and sell advertising space directly or the channels can do it ... the number of hits on an online page is actually far easier to measure and far more accurate than those 9000 miserable TRP boxes.

Its feasible ... especially since more and more people watch shows online rather than on TV. My daughter in NY hasn't even bought a TV, she prefers watching her shows online at her own convenience, rather than on TV when she might miss an episode because of her schedule.

    2. The only problem I have with this interactive platform between viewers and creatives/channels is that the hysterical voices hold sway and the more rational ones get drowned, like what happened with IPK. The more rational ones saw that Barun wanted to leave, and they still wanted the show to go on, because all said and done, it was one of the better shows on Indian telly for a long time ... they never made much noise, because they thought the show WOULD go on after the hysteria died down ... no one imagined the channel would actually shut down the show. If people had imagined such a thing could happen, they might have made more noise to keep the show on air ... I know I would have tried harder for sure.

And a love story between Sanaya Viraaf would have been preferable to this joker Farhan for sure! Especially if Khushi became more like Chhanchhan.

    3. Dia,

The point,in my view, is not about "rational" or "irrational" voices...To me, its more about the elements to be considered in decision making for a GEC for a situation in regular course. (Read - Actor quits a successful serial- should serial continue or not? now by no means is that a new occurrence in tellyland but if IPK bucked the trend of "show must go on -Character greater than actor" mouthed by its own executives...i am forced to see that there may have been other matters forcing the issue)

Frankly speaking...If a fanbase has any semblance of influence on a decision maker..as a GEC, they would be foolish to ignore any voices, "sane" or not..and to be honest..its only a matter of perspective as i see both voices just two sides of a coin..each sides asking for diff things at a point..Yes...i agree some voices more belligerent than others but thats' only to be expected of an emotional audience and the GEC would have been foolish if they had not factored that some voices would not be raised at all (irrespective of what were their own individual preferences in the matter)

for instance...u wanted the show to continue and i did not much care for it to continue but we belonged to that % of opinions not voiced. As would have been the TRP audience too..which may have not cared one way or the other....after a point

Personally, i think the semblance of influence of such a fanbase on decision making is pretty exaggerated...esp if it is based largely on nameless, faceless medium. However I agree that some amount of
importance would have been attached to those demands (esp calls, letter etc) before a decision was taken in IPK's case.

In my opinion, apart from the fan demands (which is only a minor part of the issue, imo) it may not have been tenable for IPK to continue considering its own issues..(the impact of the actor on the character, the scorching chemistry of the lead pair so diffi to be re-created, the GEC's alleged interference in the creative process as also the alleged lack of interest by the PH itself being some of the aspects that forced the GEC to consider an ending).

The GEC would wanted to cut its losses when there was still time given that they had miscalculated the impact of the serial thru much of the time it was on air

A leading GEC would definitely have definitely wanted to let a successful idea continue and if they downed the shutters..I am pretty sure it was a combination of several factors...that the issue received more than its share of drama and attention is only symptomatic of how sometimes things get blown out of proportion....Since the GEC never went by its initial intention, we will never know whether that decision was one of wisdom in hindsight or a missed opportunity...it will remain a hypothesis to be debated whenever the fancy takes us...
