13/5 - Epi 29 ... UB's Family bites the bait

Monday 13th May

Uma Ben is one heck of a selfish mother. Doctor has been thoroughly doctored as to what diagnosis to give the family. And the family bites the bait ... including Manav who swiftly disproves all theories about his non-dikraness.

So contrary to expectations, Manav is a dikra ... and dumb with it.
And the actor continues to be bad ... I thought he was almost laughing when he was supposed to be crying. But I tried not to look at him too much, his expressions are painful.

Manthan seems to be the only smart cookie ... I do hope he is the first to befriend Chhanchhan. But he is cunning too ... so either they will get along very well or they will hate each other ... Interesting.

Chhanchhan's cooking exploits end in disaster ... but I love her daadi, who finds the positives in the negatives ... today CC learnt to cut the veggies, tomorrow she will learn to cook them. No wonder Dadi and CC's mom get along so well. I love CC and her family ... and her brother is a hoot!

CC/Sanaya in pink in the last scene looked SOOOOO pretty!!! Loved that suit! And love the CC/mom bond. Actually, I love the entire Sarabhai family. How on earth will CC ever adjust in the dysfunctional Borisagar house? Run, CC, run ... the guy isn't even worth the trouble ... really!!!

Precap - Uma Ben comes out with her demand ... Manav to marry a girl of HER choice ... but of course!

  1. Today was better than last week, maybe because the entire cast took the edge off FK's bad acting. If this show drowns, he will be one major reason, some of the folks, who I know, have stopped watching the show just because of him and they are TRP contributors.

Today the contrast between two families was well depicted. The Sarabhai's are yet to have a conversation about what and who Manav's family is...big hole!

Dadi was nice, so were the brother, father and CC's mother. Wish they increase the sister's interactions too.

Manthan is also turning out to be interesting, along with Uma Ben, and he is a good actor.

Coming to FK...Dia, I think he is not going anywhere, don't see a replacement happening. For whatever reason, the PH believes he is delivering or will do so at some indefinite future. So, if we want to see Sanaya's show, this guy will come with it, bilkul muft!muft!muft!

I wrote on Nishi's thread on IF, about FK (don't know what her deal is, but she seems to know the production team), her response to me twice has been "just wait and watch".

    1. I was able to ignore Manav today, and even not look at him much ... the rest of the family were definitely far more watchable. Am keeping up hope for replacement till IPL ... if he is not replaced by then, we're stuck with him.

Yep, big hole ... CC's mom talked about Manav being busy, but no talk about what he or his family actually does ... talk about training her for sasuraal, but no talk about planning to meet his parents formally. Chalo, they just confessed their love, and then he has disappeared ... they haven't really talked at all after the court marriage.

Good idea about writing on Nishi's thread ... I have been VERY critical of FK on the few posts I have made on the forum (have not been writing much because am recovering from surgery on my shoulder, so my typing is restricted) ... I think I should add my criticism on Nishi's posts as well. Besides, I've been sending feedback on the Sony website as well. But I honestly don't think Nishi knows much ... she is more hot air. Just in case she isn't, though, and actually does know someone, I will add my two penny's worth there as well.

But after IPL, if he isn't replaced, we just have to grin and bear him. Till then, I will continue making a noise ... I didn't make a noise during IPK, and I still regret it ... don't want to have the same regret again.

    3. Take care of your shoulder, Dia.

You know i follow amita ka amit as well and even the two line actors over there are better actors than FK, Sad.

  2. Coming to the two articles you posted, if the PHs use this season model, it will be good for both the quality of content being churned out and actor attrition issues.

If there is a format of filming all the episodes before telecast, then undue interference from channel and fans can be curbed to a great extent. Stories, at least to some extent, will be told like the creatives wanted to tell. Of course, audience feedback will be important, but not to the extent where some characters are completely sidelined or story altered to appease them. Along with this, the channel putting pressure. Something similar is what seems to have started ruining IPK as early as last February or even before. The death knell for me was how the two major tracks were handled in the end, there was a hurry before they lost their ML.

A system of seasons, with definite number of episodes per season, will lessen the problem of exhaustion and boredom for actors, and reduce the revolving door issue. It also gives them time off from the show each year to pursue other projects.
The writers will have time to write better scripts and screenplays, not churning out things in the last minute. Of course, the issue which gets least attention, there is also exhaustion of the technicians and other people on the sets.

It remains to be seen how this change will happen or when it will come, but the present model does not seem sustainable in the long run and not conducive to good programming.

  3. There is a growing awareness of increase in online viewing and the need to quantify and measure it as well as to protect the content by big media houses around the world. I have friends, who are analysts, who are working in this very area- developing models to both generate revenue from such viewership and to protect content. So, I know it is doable and big media conglomerates are moving in that direction.

Good the TAM agency in India is taking note of such things, even though they are not yet part of the TRP calculation formula. The TRP method right now is severely skewed...

Coming to our dear IPK, I think the PH and especially actors are becoming aware of how popular the show actually is after it got over. They had an idea, but now they are getting to know the extent.

Dia, after six months and all the water that has flown under the bridge, I am not sure if I want IPK2. At that time, I wanted the show to continue, taking forward Khushi's story, but now I am glad all it is over.

There was a clear breaking point in IPK from February. There could be multiple reasons for it- disagreements with channel on creative issues, ML signing a movie and wanting to leave, channel asking PH to accommodate him, fan pressure to see more of Arshi chemistry, so on and so forth. The problems seem to just keep compounding from then on. LM left for a while, GH left as a writer for a while, Daljeet and other actors were feeling sidelined and wanted to leave, the list just goes on...PH had their hands full with putting together another show...somehow the whole structure was crumbling.

The channel finally deciding to shut shop seems to include all the above problems, along with fan pressure and factors which are not in public domain. What happened is not very common and a huge channel like Star Plus could not have buckled under just fan frenzy. There had to be other reasons for this final decision.

The discomfort that most fans feel is because there was no proper closure to the show and we have this feeling of something being untold in the story. Had they utilized the last 8 months to give us proper tracks on Shyam's revelation, Arnav's mom's story and Arnav's acceptance of past and his guilt and making it up to Khushi, most would be happy campers. THe team lost grip of the story and pace in February itself and then they never recovered. Abhaas in couple of interviews said that the revelation of Shyam to family and ouster from RM was to happen a lot before then it did. So maybe, they had more in store, like his striking again, or showing why he was so twisted, after all he was the main and only villian...all this we will never know. We all are aware why the kidnapping track was inserted.

So, I am not sure if the creatives would have been able to handle the story of Khushi well and kept the audience interested. In the last few months both Arnav and Khushi were shadows of their former selves and the only thing still intact was their chemistry.

    1. As usual, I find myself in complete agreement with you, Uma. I too wanted IPK to continue, but even at the time, I had reservations, because already the commitment of the PH was under question, judging by the stupid tracks they had churned out towards the end. If they had continued, it would clearly have been under pressure from SP, and for that reason only ... no interest from the PH themselves. While I still believe the root cause for the PH to lose interest in the show was because their ML lost interest very early on, but that doesn't absolve either the channel or the PH for their part in the ensuing fiasco. And the fan pressure definitely played a huge role, especially in the abrupt ending. But the PH played games too ... the leak of Barun's quitting was deliberate, it is very clear now, and it was done to stir the fans up and start off the demands for the show to end.

Gul's QH actor quit her new show for films ... Gul managed the quitting drama better this time round, but that's because fan pressure was never so strong to retain Ayaan (the old one). And maybe the channel didn't interfere? Probably, but the key difference was the absence of fan hysteria, which allowed her to make the decision. So a compliment for Barun definitely, that he made Arnav so huge that fans couldn't imagine the show without him. I wish Gul had been stronger in Feb itself and let him go when he so clearly wanted to ... but again ... what might have been ... The biggest factor in the success of IPK was definitely the Arhi chemistry, if a new Arnav had been brought, it's difficult to say how he would have done. And no point really speculating now ...

Ah well, all water under the bridge now ... I don't want an IPK2 either ... I don't even want BS/SI together on screen again, much as I loved them as Arhi ... not until Barun gives an iron-clad commitment to stay for the entire duration of the show. If he can't do that, let him stay with BW! Too much heartache ... and there are many other good-looking actors on telly who can also act.

What I WOULD love to see is the Sanaya-Viraf story that was envisaged ... BUT as a completely NEW show, with no shadow of IPK hanging over it. Or a story of marital discord, complete with conflicting emotions ... Sanaya would rock such a show.

  4. As for Sanaya, I have already written what I would like for her. A year or so of episodes with decent storytelling and TRPs is all I am expecting right now. Then she can move onto different things.

Whatever, the outcome of the current show, I think her reasons for selecting it and the PH are sound. This PH is well respected and experienced. Why they are having a shaky start here, and why they zeroed in on this particular ML, they would know better and Sanaya could not have predicted these things when she signed the show. Like you said Dia, even now, nobody is complaining about her acting. If this show fails, it will be a bit of a setback for her, but nothing she cannot recover from. The one thing she amply displayed last November was her perseverance and ability to bounce back! The other good thing is the industry seems to have woken up to acknowledge her acting talent.

    1. Oh! Wanted to add to my wishlist for Sanaya's next project, a role which will challenge her and do full justice to her acting caliber, and a co-actor who CAN act, knows what he is getting into, is focused and committed to the project, and good-looking would be an added bonus!

    2. Like I said, I am still hoping that once the marriage happens the show will settle down ... from Sanaya's and Supriya's interviews, the main story is after marriage, and that was the narration that convinced them to sign on. The shaky start, the poor ML ... hopefully those will be forgotten once that happens. As Shweths says, all Manav has to do after marriage is to look lost and bleat "mummee, mummee" at intervals ... he can be safely ignored. His brothers are more interesting, and his bhabhis are more amusing.

But hopefully CC has a decent run and gets Sanaya some plaudits, if nothing else, for holding her own with Supriya Pathak.

And after CC ends, for Sanaya's next show, adding my wishlist here ... after ditto to all your comments as always :)))

A challenging role for Sanaya ... she will be 30+ by the time CC ends, and needs to move on to more mature roles ... but still avoid the regular saas bahu stuff please.
So my dream - a mature story again, maybe this time about marital discord, or like I said above, the Sanaya-Viraaf story that was planned ... a widow taking over the provider role in her husband's family after his mysterious disappearance, falling for a new man ... and then the husband reappears ...
More emotions, romance, conflicting emotions, turbulent feelings ... all that Sanaya does so well ... author-backed role again, but better-written, with balanced characters ... AND a committed co-actor/s, who can act well, and will stay with the project till the end with full focus and concentration. Looks will be a bonus ... acting ability is a must!

I think I need to start the SHIDDATS post again :)))

    3. Dia, I totally enjoy the discussions here more than watching the actual soap. You girls rock! I hope CC picks up after the marriage. I decide to watch or skip epis based on your posts here. :)
