Rangrasiya ... Farewell

My heart was ridiculously heavy as I sat down to pen the last episode take on Rangrasiya .. a show that started with great promise nine months ago, and continued to enthrall for the first few months, with its tale of love between a rough, tough BSD officer, a man battling his own demons as much as his enemies on the border ...and a delicate desert rose with a spine of steel. And then unfortunately it scattered in direction and focus, in pursuit of those elusive TRPs, which are themselves a measure only of supreme mediocrity. I will always feel sad that we never got to see the story we were promised ...

But I am very  happy that we got to see what we did ... which included an opening set of sequences close to a movie experience, beautiful authentic locations, 3-4 months of a slowly unfolding gripping story line  ... an immensely talented ensemble cast, all of whom did complete justice to their roles ...

And last but not least, this show gave us an incredibly talented lead pair with crackling chemistry, and enormous dedication and capacity for sheer hard work. Sanaya and Ashish have scorched the screen as PaRud for the last seven months. And they actually managed to achieve the feat again in the last two months in  a hastily conceived and shoddily executed second love story ... which is no mean feat and says a lot for their amazing talent. Standing ovation to this amazing pair ...

I have followed Sanaya through four shows now, and was always aware of her amazing talent ... so her performance did not come as a surprise ... even so, it was impressive how beautifully she played a barely educated, simple village girl with no ambitions and very small dreams ... a persona completely opposite to Sanaya in real life.
She took a few days, maybe a couple of weeks to settle into the character of Paro ... this is something I have noticed Sanaya does with all her roles. She takes her time to settle in, because she actually gets into the skin of her character ... she absorbs each and every nuance of the character as she plays it. She is not a method actor in the sense that Ashish (for example) is ... she is more a thinking actor ... and an emotional one. In a recent interview, she was asked whether she thinks sad thought while doing a crying scene, because it is noticeable that she actually cries in many of her crying scenes, one can see her nose going all red :). Her reply was that she doesn't think of extraneous sad thought to cry ... she just FEELS the scene, and the tears come. That answer demonstrated her method of acting ... while she is on camera, she IS the character, she FEELS the character's thoughts and emotions ... and that's why she portrays them so brilliantly ... because she is not ACTING, she is LIVING the character.

That's probably why it took her a little while to get into Paro's skin, because she is so much the opposite of Paro. But once she did, she never looked back. The traits that differ between the two, are the acquired ones of education, language and the like. Many of the traits she shares with Paro are actually the more important ones, which formed the core strength of Paro's character - her sunny nature, her optimism, her ability to look on the bright side, her ability to deal with the bouquets and brickbats life throws her ... accept the bouquets, deal with and learn from the brickbats ... and move forward.

I marvelled again at Sanaya's talent as she transformed overnight into Myrah, a sketchily written unplanned character, and grew her into a real person, adding layers and depth to her, till she was someone I could feel, understand, empathise with.

Ashish ... he was a fantastic costar, equally matched with Sanaya not only in talent, but even more importantly in his  hard work, dedication and professionalism ... all these things put together, went into making their pairing one of the most sizzling jodis seen on the television screen in a long while. He had an author backed role, a complex role, a very layered role ... and he did justice to it. He portrayed the many shades of Rudra ... his angst, his anger, his vulnerability, his passion, his fire ... and brought Rudra to roaring life. After the bad experience with FK in Chhanchhan, I am always wary of Sanaya's costars ... it was good to see her matched with someone worthy of her talent. And he benefitted a lot from this show ... he was probably always a good actor ... haven't seen him earlier, so can't say ... but he became a star with Rangrasiya. Something he has taken pains to acknowledge repeatedly.

I felt he grew as an actor through the course of this show ... he was prone to hamming and going over the top in his emotional scenes ... something I can say only here ;) In many scenes during the first few months, I lost patience with his unending tears and his OTT acting in the all too frequent breakdowns. He seems to have learned from Sanaya, the art of underplaying emotions, making them more subtle, and actually trying to feel them rather than act  them ... he was more effective in the last couple of weeks in the emotional scenes than in the ones in the earlier part of the show.

Both actors are completely professional, their chemistry was sizzling ... and the last couple of weeks with MyRud was testament to that ... in a love story I wasn't even rooting for, they made me feel their pain, their angst ... if only the makers had done this with Paro, and gone in for a proper separation track, rather than killing her off, the show might have done better.

What I'm most happy about ... after Rangrasiya, Sanaya has finally laid to rest for once and for all, the question as to who is responsible for the sizzling chemistry in her shows. No question about it all now. She has had three successful jodis in three love stories ... while all the co-actors in question have had their most successful jodis only with her, and haven't re-created the magic with anyone else. Naysayers can bleat and whine all they like about how good her co-actors were ... Mohit is a mediocre actor at best, Barun is good, Ashish is very good ... but Sanaya is the common factor for all three - she has given them all their biggest hits of their respective careers.

Of the ensemble cast, special mention to two more surprises ... Udit Shukla and Geetanjali Mishra ... one a loveable rogue, whom you could not hate, even when he was at his worst ... the other, a beautiful character, who evolved even more beautifully through the show, from a timid browbeaten housewife to a woman of substance.

Ananya Khare was good all through ... she was playing something she has done before, so no surprises there. I liked the reformed Mohini in the last week, she retained the acid tongue, but tempered it with good intentions.

Signing off from Rangrasiya with a hope and a prayer ... hope Sanaya comes back soon in a rocking new show ... from her interview, she is not yet ready to slip into the regular saas bahu crap, she will try to find something different again, regardless of TRPs. And a prayer that her next show hits the bulls eye in terms of popularity and those damned elusive TRPs both ... at least gets decent enough TRPs for the makers to stick to their story, without worrying about the show going off air ... and gets her the long overdue critical acclaim and awards she so richly deserves.

  1. Hi Dia,

As a critic of the show,I will remember these things about RR,
    1. The excellent cinematography of the desert episodes.
    2. The beautiful costumes. (Even Myrah's wedding attire looked unique.)
    3. The initial character sketch....which ST failed to build up on...
    4. Raghuvir Shelkhavat's awesome dialogues...as was in Madhubaala.
    5. The title song...really haunting...surprisingly, the bg score was jarring most of the times in the show itself.
    6. Almost all the actors..but I will remember Mohini Kaki, Sumer, Thakur and Maithili along with Rudr and Paro. I think the only major casting failure was that of Rohit.

Coming to acting...U must be right about San- she took some time to settle down. I think that was also because Paro was not clearly written- the disconnect was quite visible...later on she got better.

I am not sure about Aashish's style of acting- Archana once mentioned about how it irritated her when he got moody, trying to get into Rudr's character...anyway, I felt he got into Rudr's skin earlier than Sanaya got into Paro's. The only complaint I had was of the over emoting in the tear jerker scenes.

On the whole, the actors wonderfully enacted a script that failed to tap their talents...but I must say ST has this trademark style now. I remember sitting in awe through some scenes in MB...there was this one particular scene where Madhu stoically defends her mother murdering her father...looked preachy and contrived...but was whistle-worthy. He carried on with the same style in RR , and that is what made it worthwhile for the actors. There were some major drama points scattered through the weak script...I wonder if ST is planning to evolve from that style ever. We had discussed this in R and R wrt MB...in the Sholay scene...and the probable excuse we gave him was that MB was a tribute to Indian Cinema...and like U rightly pointed out once before, I guess that is ST's style.

Your first paragraph...beautifully written...also made me wonder for the umpteenth time why no one had the vision to write this show for a limited number of episodes- would have done well in the '24' format- with no pressure of trps...now it is neither here, nor there... And if only ST learned to derive from past mishaps while watering down the script, instead of passing the buck.

On Sanaya not ready to slip into regular Saas Bahu...I am not even sure if there are that many regular saas- bahu shows. CC and the last months of Parud in RR of felt more like a saas bahu show than most of the shows in top ten nowadays...QH, JA, YHM, Jamai Raja, PKD, Veera, KKB.....none of these are Saas Bahu shows....even new shows on the block like MATH, Udaan, Nisha and Cousins- so much of variety!

Sanaya just needs to wait patiently before she signs her next project on. I hope she takes on a show in SP next...pretty sure SP will revamp their shows soon...they are losing out on the trp race slowly...

  2. I have always had the impression that the audience misunderstood (!?) the plot to be male-centric. Now that the show is over, we will never get to know the original plot of RR. To me, it looked like a male-centric story in the beginning. It was all about Rudra. Although, at some point of time, the plot was bound to become female-centric, albeit in a subtle way. Atleast that's what I think.

I can understand why people never connected with Paro till she died. Or may be, the audience failed to notice the connection. I have seen only two shows of SI. IPKKND and RR. So, my benchmark for Paro is Khushi here. Paro is a very silent, shy, subtle character, while KKG was loud, talkative and full of life. Paro's manners are completely opposite to KKGSR. But the basic essence of both the characters are more or less similar. Happiness is the keyword of their existences. Be happy and make others happy. If I am thinking correctly, the audience connected well with KKG because of the character being vocal all the time. She always made it a point to make ASR's life difficult (in a funny, kiddish way), but almost all the time, ASR overpowered her. The same thing happened with Myrah too, but in her case, she was clueless or rather the CVs were clueless as to how to proceed Rudra-Myrah's love story. Paro wasn't loud, she was a woman of few words. But her few words were sufficient to silence Rudra. Unfortunately, the audience was (still is) not able to connect to a silent character like her. I don't really blame the makers for creating Paro the way she was. But I feel something went wrong in the execution. Or it could be that Paro was supposed to emerge stronger (in an obvious manner) after a while. But the makers changed the entire plot in search for the elusive TRPs. So, the audience never got to see the stronger Paro. I am not including myself in the audience. The IF junta and the others. I like subtle characters. Characters that can prove their point without being too loud. I loved KKG for the way she was. Though she is not someone I would not favour, I liked the way she complemented ASR. I like them as a pair. ASR was deliberately mean to KKG many times, but Rudra was not such a person at all. I think I likes Rudra and Paro as two different individuals and also as a pair. Rudra changed under Paro's influence. Paro broke the ice between Rudra and his mom. She was the reason behind uniting the family. But we never got to see all these tracks in detail. So, the character sketch given to Paro might have been good, but the execution went haywire once the laddoo track started. May be Paro was bound to emerge stronger after her marriage with Rudra. We will never know for sure. Anyways, most of what I have said are mere speculations. Could be true or false. Another thought is that SI was the main USB for this show when it started. None of us knew about AS and the others. So, SI would have been definitely careful in choosing her role. What she didn't bargain for was the poor execution. And the channel. Whatever issues the channel had with the PH, the starting point must have been the TRPs for sure. Or the split between Tewari and Shukla also. Tewari must have been too adamant to change the plot until it was too late. I remember AS mentioning this fact in one of his interviews. And the channel had the last laugh.

  3. Continued.....

I guess all of you would agree with me on this and we have discussed this before. RR would have stood a chance, had it been aired on a different channel, say STAR. Many people watch channels like STAR and the chemistry between AS and SI itself would have been sufficient to keep the audience glued to their TV sets. And the makers would have got a chance to show the intended concept without a lot of tweaks. Hmmm.... I know it is wishful thinking, but I would like to see AS and SI in a show together sometime in the future. A show, as intense as RR.

It was a pleasure interacting with all of you, ladies. Big thanks to MB, Shwetha, Archana, Aki, Ratna, Su, Lin, SingaporeFan, Kiran, Lakshmi, Uma, and finally Dia. And to all those, I have not mentioned because of my forgetfulness. Until we meet next time, take care all of you.

Please ignore the rest. :P :P Hope my comments were clear to everyone.

  5. Madhu,

That was a nice dissection and analysis of the show.

Few points that occurred to me.
    1. It is a myth that only shows on SP do well. If JA and KKB from Zee and BV from Colors got to the top, every show on these channels have the SAME POTENTIAL to reach the top ten.BI and RR had been promoted like no other show on any other channel, but neither clicked...

    2. I definitely belong to that audience who misunderstood Paro. According to the promos, Paro was silent, yet feisty...even if she was deaf and mute, there is an expectation from a woman whose husband has been murdered recently...I have said this before too...In his eagerness to showcase 'chemistry', ST crossed that line too soon. He showed us a woman who dreamed of a future with a stranger, portrayed the heart break of those shattered dreams beautifully....till then it was fine. People who watched the show for a love story would have been happy with Paro moving on and falling in love too quickly with Rudr...for me, I lost the heroine there. I was not asking for more tears or retaliation...just some prolonged silent treatment would have done the trick instead of Paro falling head over heels for Rudr overnight. I think that was the point where a lot of the critics of the show left IF too...Ran ki reth mein rakth se rachi...a love story built on the blood shed on sand...unfortunately, those blood stains were washed away too soon, if U understand what I mean. What was left of the show as an everyday love story!

    3. I feel the trp audience has no problem accepting a silent, long-suffering heroine- they have welcomed BV and KKB and DABH with open arms.So it must definitely have been the execution...

    4. I wonder how much of the blame lies with the channel...Colors is generally considered the most PH friendly channel...but since we don't know the inside currents, I'd rather not say much about it...except that when IPK closed down, SP was the most hated channel for fandom. I do believe that SP functions in the most systematic way...so much so, sometimes the orderliness makes me feel all their shows are becoming monotonous.

    5. Paro- Myrah- Khushi: How different is one from the others? Ask Rudr- he will give you the answer. One may calmly accept everything coming her way...one may hide or forget beneath the bubbly- chirpiness...one may be lucky enough to have it all handed to her on a platter...but in essence, I find them all to be the same. So on paper, all three characters are good...it all depends on how their stories are unfolded before us...and also our personal preferences for certain character traits, I suppose.

    6. I got the impression Sanaya chose CC over RR...if so, she just chose among the best that came her way. I think DD and Vivian from MB were lesser known artists compared to Sanaya and Ashish...MB went on to become a bigger hit...and was more watchable until the leap, despite some unpalatable twists...even I think something snapped when the Producers went their separate ways.

On the whole, all I can say about RR as someone who followed ST's previous show Madhubala is that I did not have very many expectations from the maker and he did not prove me wrong. He succeeded in creating a good pair and fell woefully short in telling their story.

  6. Glad to read your comment-cum-warning about ST's show Su - I have only followed Sanaya's shows so far but caught glimpses and scenes of shows my Mother watches. All I can say is that story lines and execution is seriously amiss in Indian tele-serial world. IPKKND was my first induction in watching an Indian soap, so I try and maintain a "safe distance" of involvement.
Madhu - one of the gripes we all had very early on was the treatment meted out to FL. Paro's story went on the back burner very quickly, never to materialise after that, except for 'blink and you will miss' moments. As Dia had so rightly pointed out - in TV, the FL must be shown as strong and her story must be developed for the audience connect to happen. Since Sanaya's role was given short shrift, the connection never took place.
RR was (I felt) a male-centric show and story and was told accordingly. The nuances, build-ups, back story were all missing in its flamboyant presentation (not that I had any complaints - I too loved the cinematography of the show). Even the stories and plots that RR had started out with relating to arms smuggling, human trafficking, spousal abuse, etc. were quickly lost within the first few months.

  7. It is unfortunate that the show did not look to other story lines, to keep the views interested. The smuggling of arms, the girls that got married and taken over the border, the Lala affair and the devil himself the grand chief, who killed off her step sister. They could have been other parallel stories and maybe they could have then told the original story, whatever it was with more conviction. It all started off so well, and then they killed off Paro. That was the biggest mistake they could do. Just didn't make any sense at all. But they went on with a different story and when that didn't work then they killed off the entire show.
Now just waiting to see what Sanaya will do next. I also would like her to work with AS. They did make a brilliant couple and seemed very comfortable with each other. Only time will tell.
Take care all, hope to see you all very soon.
Thank you again Dia for your brilliant updates that keep us all enthralled.
    Lin xx

  8. Love reading your analysis ladies. Dia - lovely write up on the show. Although I stopped watching RR a while back, I came here diligently everyday and often several times a day to read your takes. And I still do - ab aadat ho gayi hai.
Although I loved Paro's character, I did feel cheated with some of the uncharacteristic developments - like her falling for Rudra so quickly, her being so forgiving, her never thinking/ mentioning her aunt who had brought her up - after captivity or even after being reunited with her. They never voiced her feelings. She always went out of her way to make everyone in Rudra's family happy but never thought of her own? Very uncharacteristic. It's like she had amnesia about her past.
Some of the tracks that did not sit well with me were the poisoned ladoos, the whole Ankita track and the Shantanu track. OK - I'm a romantic- I don't like villains.
In my opinion, everything went south when AS started JDJ - he did catch up later - but I thought it was too late. At that point, if they had explored some other tracks - like Nandini, Sumer's plan of selling the haveli, Samrat's booming business leading to Maithili's adoption, things would have been so much better. Bringing Maasa back and then never tying the loose ends was so stupid. Why the need to bring Shantanu and his negativity - if there was no real story behind it? Even with Shatanu, if they showed Rudra-Paro ganging up and overthrowing him or even Maithili- Paro doing it- wouldn't that have made more sense.
Instead they kill Paro and bring Myrah to come clean up what Paro started and what Paro should have got recognition for.
Anyway - Sanaya is whom I started watching the show for and I did enjoy many of the others - like Ashish, Geetanjali, Anaya and Sumer.
Like you gals said, RR stands out (a mile) from the other serials. It was classy, fab shooting, good looking and good actors, fantastic clothes (not tents like what KKGSR wore) and beautiful sets. Not to forget the dialogs. Worth watching for just this stuff.
Overall a mostly enjoyable experience and so scenes that I will cherish.

See you soon on the next serial blog. Please do let me know if there is anything worth watching - I do not have Hindi channels at home and depend on news from friends (and Sanaya's fans) and then watch online.

    - Archana

  9. Thank you all, for commenting ..RR had a lot of potential, but due to various reasons, sadly most of it was not realised.

I will not be here for the next three weeks or so, am on holiday. I'm making two new posts ... Other Shows, and News on Sanaya. If any news, rumours or gossip ;) of Sanaya comes in, please add it there, along with links if possible. I don't expect much news till after the AVTA awards, and till she is back in India, but this is Sanaya we are talking about, so anything is possible. :)
