Will update episode later ... soooo good to be back to daily updates!
Sanayalicious ... and doggilicious episode :)
Good to see Sanaya back on screen. Loved her intro!
Battle lines set up already.
IPK had arrogant egoistic hero, here we have arrogant egoistic MIL ... the power of money.
Liked the friends' scenes ... reminded me of my college friends :(
The Supriya Sanaya face offs will be good ... both awesome actresses!
*Edited*
The start of a new journey ... hope this one is as big a milestone in Sanaya's career as MJHT and IPKKND were. Fingers crossed ...
The episode -Daadi trying to fix up rishta for rebellious granddaughter, who according to her is way past marriageable age ... first refreshing change - the girl is not 18 and fresh out of school.
Daadi's one-liner of the day - marriages are made in heaven ... 'so do you expect me to wait for you to go up and throw a guy down from there for my granddaughter?'
Marriage counsellor provides suitable boy ... with the face of a dog Because apparently said granddaughter, apart from being old, also has another disadvantage ... she loves dogs! And this is a sanskaari dog - he does namaste too So Daadi, please adjust with his face, after all, he is adjusting with Chhanchhan's age
Daadi wakes up in panic and runs to her son's room ... Dad manages to placate and calm her down, barely managing to hide his amusement ... tells her to recite the Gayatri mantra to calm herself down.
By morning, the whole house knows about Daadi's dream ... much to Daadi's indignation!
Introduction of Chhanchhan ... with dogs ... considering this is Sanaya's show, the intro could have been a bit grander! CC playing with dogs as she goes about her job of training ... Moti aunty is happy and pays her ... sent off with a reminder to feed her dog less than she feeds herself!
Chhanchhan returns home, where Daadi is grumbling about her unconventional family and their lack of concern about her eldest grand daughter's marriage ... dad, an artist, mom, a history professor, brother a wildlife photographer and sister, a tattoo artist ... liked the way they neatly brought in the fact that getting God's or husband's name tattooed was the norm in the old days! Mom couldn't cook when she got married, was taught by Daadi ... me liking both Mom and Daadi! People after my own heart!
Chhanchhan returns, and is as amused as the rest about Daadi's dream ... rushes off for her friend's wedding ... first she has to get PuchPuch ready an adorable Shih Tzu ... She almost forgets to get ready herself in the rush!
Friends scene ... ready made sarees for all ... my daughter would appreciate this one! Cute bonding between the friends ... Chhanchhan and one friend set off on scooty to get prasad from temple ... first deja vu of Khushi with the scooty scene ... pretty much the only one I felt during the episode.
Temple scene - the first clash ... as panditji tells Chhanchhan and friend that Vishnuji is sleeping so no darshan ... Uma Ben arrives, a quick greasing of palms and Vishnuji can be woken up from his slumber. As Uma Ben superciliously tells Chhanchhan ... 'Vishnuji wakes up only for Lakshmi.' Great voice inflections by Supriya P there. Also the way she tells her servant - 'upar karo' the umbrella ... pure arrogance in the voice - I'm talking to an inferior being.
Chhanchhan calls a spade a spade ... 'this is bribery.' Uma Ben not amused. Pandit wisely removes himself from the battlefield. CC's friend equally wisely reminds CC that they don't have the time to battle over ideals, because Purvi is waiting for the prasad. Chhanchhan unwillingly agrees ... Uma Ben rubs it in by asking her for thanks ... Chhanchhan thanks her politely ... but her eyes give her away. This is not right ...
The clashes between Sanaya and Supriya are going to be good to watch.
Back to the friends ... as Purvi gets ready worriedly (pity the girl is only there for a cameo, I liked her) ... and Chhanchhan arrives ... again, sweet friends's scene, they promise to stay together, and refuse to take or give dowry ... nice to see this, I wish they would show guys of today also pledging the same thing! A message that cannot be repeated too often in our country!
Chhanchhan has left the gift in her scooty, so she goes with friend to fetch it ... and bumps into male lead ... who apparently is allergic to dogs ... and as rude as his mom. And Chhanchhan isn't the apologetic sorts either!
My take -
First of all, GOOD to see Sanaya back on screen again! Lights up the screen with her sheer presence! TV just got interesting again!
Uma Ben is not the same as Dina Pathak from Khubsoorat ... she is more like a female ASR, with her arrogance about her money and position. And Chhanchhan is as feisty as Khushi, but more balanced and thehri hui, can hold her tongue when required ... the way she bit her tongue when asked by Uma Ben to say sorry, and then said the words politely enough, even with a smile, but one which didn't reach her eyes ... no disrespect to elders, but has the courage of her convictions. Nice! Very much my kind of girl!
I love the way Sanaya has managed to shake off Khushi ... the exaggerated mannerisms and facial gestures were missing, the acting was much more restrained, the clash with Supriya was very restrained, quiet and dignified, the objections voiced very politely, yet firmly ... no 'darti hai par karti hai' here ... it's very much 'dil ka kahaa maanti hai' ... she will do what she feels is right, and has the confidence to do so. More like Dr. Simran from Astitva ... firm-voiced, confident, yet polite and graceful with it.
I liked the friends' scene ... the girls were not great actors, but they were decent, and the loudness and chirpiness reminded me of my gang from college ... as did the soft-voiced farewells and bitter-sweet happiness at the first of many weddings, which would eventually break up the friends' circle. We wondered how we would survive not being able to talk to each other every day, twenty times a day, after living in the same hostel for almost ten years ... the scenes brought back those memories.
The introduction of an unconventional family was the only scene which seemed a bit forced ... introducing each member and their profession, and emphasizing on the unconventionality of the family ...
Loved the dogs in the show ... Sanaya is obviously completely comfortable with dogs, and it shows.
All in all, a good first episode ... will take a little while for everyone to sink into character ... Sanaya, Supriya and Chhanchhan's parents are already pretty much in synch ... the friends, CC's brother and sister will take a little time. Male lead ... didn't notice him much today, he was barely there. He has a tough time ahead trying to match up to both Sanaya and Supriya.

Watched the first episode..no ads at all..which surprised me... it was ok..
ReplyDeleteam very happy to see Sanaya back..but i am not sure if i like the show yet... its only one episode of course..but lets see...
Hey Girls, me back with Sanz..
ReplyDeleteSorry girls asli duniya has been hectic and hardly got time to be here... but couldn't wait to meet u girls.. R & R with sanz's onscreen is irresitable.. hope i just make time to come here regularly
So how is the first review ??? missed Sanaya's entry... lots of similarities with IPK with scooty, marriage and hero with glares !!
The chanchan family is good with character's well introduced. the friends part was little drag.
but for me the highlight was sanaya and supriya temple scene .. two amazing actors worth watching .. they stole the episode within there 3 mins.. waiting to watch them more ....
Aaru, I think I am totally over IPK ... I didn't even see the similarities, except in the scooter scene.
DeleteAnd kudos to Sanaya, she is playing Chhanchhan very differently from Khushi. In the teaser in BALH, I saw a Khushi hangover, here it was all Sanaya and Chhanchhan. Much more mature, restrained performance ... already can see the difference.
Dia me to over IPK long back .. its just that like what you said the sanaya's intro could have been a little more grander.. but neverthe less Sanaya lights up the screen with just being in the frame.. and this show is all about CC so all for it ..
DeleteAs I said love the family mad and carzy in their own way, modern accepting the change yet rooted ...
What I like about Chanchan's character was the 'therava'- the maturity, the poise and the strong convictions yet would bend it for the loved onces...
Supriya is like u said arogant ASR with ego of money power... would be waiting to see more tashan between ...
I will not coment on the hero although he has to work really hard if he has lots of scene with supriya and sanaya..
Dia chanchan agreed is very different from Khushi... although bubby chirpy and strong conviction like khushi , chanchan knows where to draw a line and where to stand up...
And last not the least Sanz has good clothes this time.
WOW!!! :D LOVED the epi... :D can SOOOO see today's generation relating to it...those endless photos in saris on somebody else's wedding, the rush to make one of the cutest photo as a display pic (as a matter of fact, drool over ur own photos.. :P), the discussion about caption.. :P WOW...I can replace all of the 5 girls and put me and my friends in that scene.. :))))
ReplyDeleteloved supriya-sanaya face off...chanchan/sanaya's expressions conveyed a lot...that she didn't agree to what the lady said, but would still respect her because she is elder to her... :))) a perfect blend of two contrasting generations...
and tomo comes manav...can't wait for it!!! :)) already loving it a lot...and if every episode is like this...it'll be a compete treat.. :D
SO gonna search for the saree that says "saree ki saree aur scooty chalane ki azaadi" when I go to India the next time!!! :P that is one concept almost every girl of today would relate to!! :D
"hum kabhi dahej lenge nahi aur denge bhi nahi"... :)) remember having exactly the same onversation with my mom about a yr ago.. :))) SO much to reminiscence about...so much to relate to..so much to take away from... :))
Mads! Hi-5!!! Me too ... liked it a LOT ... Chhanchhan is much more a heroine I can relate to ... the girls' scene reminded me of my own friends ... and those of my kids :))) they are forever taking their own snaps and immediately posting them on FB ... so typical!!!
DeleteThe dahej bit ... I think this message can not be repeated often enough on Indian telly and movies - especially seeing how fat the big fat Indian weddings have become! Wish we could have some guys also making this promise ... or show a girl walking out of her mandap if the in-laws demand dahej! Those are scenes I would love to see!
I am going to enjoy this ... I loved the feisty Khushi, but couldn't stand the OTT one ... here we will get only feisty, yet mature and balanced ... and no OTT Chhanchhan at all! Totally my kind of girl!!!
Manav ... am not too bothered honestly ... he looks decent, and he won't be doing much, the first episode set the tone for the show - it will be Sanaya vs Supriya. The rest are all secondary. Am not expecting a major love story here, if he acts decently, it will be good enough.
yup Diya..i disliked the IPK makers soooo much for giving us OTT Kushi ...such a welcome change to see Chanchan...even the cloths are so much better....
Deletehey mads...i have tried those ready made sarees..they are kinda cool, you should definitely check those out :-)
DeleteAppy, you said my dil ki baat ... I loved the clothes!
DeleteI think the IPK makers were trying to show that Khushi was down market and poor, so tried desperately to dim her natural beauty by giving her stuff that normal girls wouldn't be seen dead in! Whenever they gave her nice clothes, like the sarees, Khushi shone ... she could never be taken to be inferior to anyone!
Here, Chhanchhan is from a reasonably well to do family, all the members educated and self-sufficient, doing their own thing ... a very normal upper middle class family ... so Chhanchhan is well dressed and doesn't have to be dumbed down. What a welcome change!
hey Diya...nice to see your daily updates..I am also happy to see Sanaya back..the 1st epi was okay for me....but I am hooked cause Sanaya is in there ;-)...my only crib is that 9pm is a little late for me but its only monday thru thursday..so that way its good ;-)
ReplyDeleteDia,
ReplyDeleteI thought it was PERFECT!
There is not a single thing to criticise about the first episode.
The things I loved...
1. Dadi's dream- what a way to introduce the main character! Through a dream....and that too only the reference...such a welcome change from SC's intro of Kumud...that was irritating to say the least. Dadi is cute.
2. Dad is gr8 too- he knows how to handle his mom and give his daughter her freedom. Make that, his son and daughters. Loved this family- Modern Artist (LOL at that painting he made- his mom's fears! LOL!)plus Tattoo Artist plus Wild life photographer plus Dog Trainer! What a family, yaar! And add to that the mother who is a History Lecturer! Loved that DIL- MIL dialogue there- 'hopefully she'll get an understanding and patient MIL like I got!'
3. San's intro:
Not too grand...but very sweet! Just right, for a simple girl! Make -Up was a little off. But her costumes are good. And a very refreshing change from Khushi. I think, among all her roles Chhanchhan will be the one that will push her into that league.
Star Guild Awards- when BALH was winning so many awards, one of the celebrities mentioned, 'jo log achhe lagte hain, woh bade hi achhe lagte hai'.
Set me thinking. Who watches the television shows? Certainly not the bigwigs in the industry. Sanaya herself does not watch any show. It is usually the daughters and wives who are sitting at home, who watch- and BALH had Priya whom an urban woman could relate to...and the guys naturally watch what their wives or daughters put on during dinner time. (Naturally, I was put off big time that Sanaya had not even received a nomination!)
Now, CC has all the ingredients we can relate to- from the college goers to the working women to housewives who have gone through that phase. TRPs may not be great, because it may not appeal to the rural crowd- I don't know what were the best trps for BALH- CC will probably reach that. But she will get noticed more in the industry.
4. The dogs- Pooch Pooch...cho chweet!
5. The friends: Loved how they got the bride to put in her share too, for her wedding gift!LOL! I recognise only one girl who is there in BALH also. They look OKish.
6. That ready made saree thing- again so relatable to, esp for the college going crowd.
7. THE BEST THING OF ALL: HER BG MUSIC! That chhanchhan of her payal....very nice.
I missed the first and last two minutes, I hope I didn't miss too much.
On the whole, I AM REALLY HAPPY FOR SANAYA_- she is in very good hands. And the good thing about this PH is, they will wind up at the first sign of things going wrong. When the actress playing Toasty fell sick, they wound up the show. Ofc, I hope they don't EVER take it to that stage of the vamp they brought in SBS- I think every one was put off by that.
To end on a happy note, if BALH pulled in the thinking women in their late 20s and above, CC will ALSO pull in the Channel V crowd. Post IPK, this is simply the best thing that could have happened to Sanaya! If they maintain this pace,I will remember her more as CC than Khushi!

DeleteYOu must have read this already.
The guy has an attitude, like I said. Guess he is big time connected to come out with this: *LOL*
"Ekta Kapoor has done her job of making people sad and depressed with her shows, this show will make people cheerful and spread love."
I really liked this bit:
"I am sure girls will like Chhanchhan but I really hope girls look at me as well. I hope I win this competition and girls like me more (laughs)." Farhan thinks girls like Chhanchhan exist in every family. "If you look around, you will definitely find a Chhanchhan in your life. The look is contemporary and she is a chirpy young girl. Such girls exist all around us and they make the entire family happy. Chanchan makes everyone happy with her smile and Sanaya Irani actually has a very pleasant smile so according to me she is the right person to play the role."
Yep, he has an attitude ... put me off a bit, both Sanaya's previous costars have been very humble and down to earth in their initial interviews, so the contrast was even more glaring!
DeleteJust watching SBS, where Ram Kapoor and Sakshi Tanwar are taking pride of place on ramp. You're right, shows like BALH, while not raking in TRP's, connect to the bigwigs in the industry more ... even KTLK is the same, Kritika has gotten recognition through the show. Of course, both also have very reputed PH's behind them, Ekta and Rajan Shahi ... but Optimystix is equally well known.
So let's hope that Chhanchhan does catapult Sanaya to even greater heights ... Khushi brought her loads of popularity and recognition among the masses, but even I used to feel very annoyed that her acting talent was not recognized, because of the craziness of Khushi's character, and the way it was destroyed so many times to glorify Arnav's character.
Anyway, what I really loved about the modern family, is that they are not fretting about daughter's marriage from the age of 18 ... that really gets my goat! Instead, they are both pretty cool about it, while the Daadi is fretting ... very typical!
I already liked Gunjan as a character better than Khushi ... Khushi did have a lot of characteristics that I liked, including her feistiness, but her OTT craziness prevented her from being my favourite. It was more Arshi than Khushi alone.
I think Chhanchhan will end up becoming one of my favorite characters ... not just of Sanaya, but on Indian telly in general ... along with Dr Simran and Gunjan. I like this type of heroine - very few heroines on Indian telly have been educated, modern, yet rooted in traditional values - they are either modern and vamps, or traditional and dumb a la Gopi vhau and Sandhya.
Let's see ... I enjoyed the first episode, I have no major faults to find with it ... the characters were not all well settled into their roles, but then, neither were they during the first couple of weeks of IPK .
In fact I remember that it took almost ONE MONTH for me to feel that finally Barun was getting into the skin of Arnav, he struggled a lot initially ... Sanaya took about a week, but her character the initial week was slightly Gunjan-ish, so she had it easier. I think you will find that if you read my first month's takes on IPK too ... so am more than willing to give more time to Chhanchhan.
First look: Chanchan - A treat for all!
ReplyDeleteSanaya Irani in the title role of Chanchan delivers the best to her fans and viewers…
The much awaited Sanaya Irani starrer Chanchan went on air last night on Sony TV. At the start of the episode we saw an anxious dadima concerned about her grand-daughter's marriage and worriedly enquiring for a suitable groom at the marriage bureau. This scene and the one which followed were hilarious for the kids and set the tone for a comic episode.
Chanchan's entry was predictable as we all knew that she was a dog trainer and in her first scene she was seen training dogs. A dog lover in real life too, Sanaya looked natural doing the scene. The entire Gujarati background was cleverly depicted with subtlety.
The episode was fast paced without any slow takes which was a relief. Along with the introduction of Chanchan's cool family we also met Chanchan's close friends. A girl gang of four including Chanchan they represented the young brigade of Ahmedabad. Off to another close friend's wedding, Chanchan on the way bumps into Umaben (Supriya Pathak) who is bribing the temple priest to open the temple doors for an exclusive darshan.
After their meeting Chanchan mutters to herself, "Aisi saas kisi ko bhi na mile" and that is where the fear lies. The serial with its youthful flavor and comical Gujarati humor will appeal to everyone – right from kids, to youngsters to grandparents but there is a fear that somewhere once Chanchan gets married to Umaben's son the serial may take a typical saas-bahu turn!
Talking of Umaben's son Manav Borisagar played by newbie Farhan Khan, his introductory scene and the actor looked a bit awkward. A little bit of more rehearsals for Farhan will help him otherwise it will be left to the experienced actor in Sanaya Irani to make the scenes impeccable.
In the coming episodes of Chanchan we expect to meet the Borisagar family which is a big joint family and that sure promises to be much more fun filled experience. Producer Vipul Shah of Optimystix who has a funny bone as is also evident in the long running Sony TV show Comedy Circus gives his latest serial too, a hilarious touch.
