3/1/14 - Epi 5 ... The Past That Binds

Friday 3rd Jan

Don't know where to start today ... with the last scenes, the shadows of the past that hang heavy over both Rudra and Paro? Shadows that cast a heavy darkness over their present too ...

Or with the first few scenes ... the tender budding of new emotions, unfurling their delicate petals under the light of a hot desert sun ... two pairs of hazel eyes meeting again in the mirror ... words unspoken, emotions as yet unfamiliar, stirring in two wounded souls ...

Both are quiet, both are reticent, sparing of words ... keeping their thoughts imprisoned inside their hearts ... he is an emotionless soldier, his only relative his father ... she is a dutiful obedient daughter soon to be married to another. Yet why did Rudra stop and turn at the mention of Paro's marriage? Why did Paro caress his blood on her sleeve?

The episode - starts with the last scene of yesterday, Paro stands frozen by the fire, horrified at the sight of her nightmare coming to life, so horrified that she can't move a muscle ... frozen to the spot despite the heat of the fire ...
and Rudra comes running back for her , vaulting over the wall of flames, just in time to catch her as she faints into his arms ...
(SN - how can a person faint standing? Not possible!!!)
And he stands for a long moment, transfixed by the delicate beauty in his arms ...

dil ki dhadkan sooni sooni
saansein bhi adhoori
aadha aadha mile to hove
kamiyan saari poori
Rahe kyun rootha rootha, man basiya
Rangrasiya rangrasiya
Rangrasiya rang jaave rang rang ne sapnon mein rangrasiya

Till his men drive up and he carries her away from the fire to safety ... revives her with water with a worried Bindi ... stops his men from questioning her ... orders that she be dropped safely home ... Rudra, the protector.
And as she opens her eyes, the first person she sees is him ... unblinking, direct, his gaze on her, hers on him ... till he turns and walks away ...
Bindi tries to explain ... they were only carrying byah  ...
Whose byah?
Paro ka byah ...
And he turns ... and looks at her again ... a question in his eyes ... as though asking ... your byaah? how can you ...?
And she looks down ... as though in apology ... yet with a tiny frown, as though asking herself, why am I sorry? Why is he angry?
Because you are his, and he is yours ...

His man tries again, overruled ... 'drop the girls home.'
And two pairs of eyes meet again in a mirror ... meet and cannot look away ...
Till Rudra breaks contact again ... and Paro meets her old friend Rukmani the butterfly (or her great-great-great-great granddaughter)

Back in the haveli ... the Rajmata is very fond of Paro, like a daughter, it seems ... and is as bitter with the BSD as her husband.
And Paro touches a blood stain on her sleeve ... his blood ... a soft touch, a caress ... a memory, a man running to save her bag, then running back to save her ...

While Rudra cauterises his wound with alcohol ... and drinks the rest .. is he too, remembering ...?

Bindi is all praises for the new BSD officer, Thakur-sa is not pleased at all ... he hates the BSD!!!

Rudra investigates the dead man ... he's an infiltrator from across the border.
Cutting, biting words for his junior ... tired chasing two girls? And you let the main culprit run away? Go rest.
That officer must have shrivelled up in his shoes!

Memories of the past ...Paro's maami finds her mother's wedding lehnga for Paro ... and asks about her doll. Paro says she gave it away ... and she remembers the crying boy in the bus.

Rudra remembers his father ... bitter, harsh, still twisted in his memories of his unfaithful wife ... his refusal to come back to the place she betrayed him ... as long as Rudra's mother's eyes look at him, from Rudra's face, he can't forget his wife.
And by not forgetting, he doesn't allow his son to forget either ... beautiful women are not to be trusted ...
Both men trapped in the shadows of their past ...

And Paro trapped in the nightmare that is her past ... a nightmare that she can't escape from, no matter how much she tries ... a nightmare reinforced today by another BSD man and another fire ... another day that almost brought destruction into her life ...

Next week is the wedding ... and more fireworks!

  1. Saurabh Tewari had promised that the audiences would be hooked by end of the week - that was for the aam janta - we were done for within the first episode, never mind that it is old wine in a new bottle. The casting is perfect, writing is good but the DOP has to get special mention for raising the bar on a tele-serial.

In a way, the story line sounds almost like what Gul had started with, except she lost her way soon enough. Hope Nautanki gets to tell the whole story, as originally envisaged, and the entire cast and crew remain intact to do full justice. Perhaps our collective prayers for Sanaya and good story telling have been answered - time will tell.
All I can say at this stage, Sanaya and 4L got me hooked to IPKKND and now I am relishing a repeat performance here.

    1. Aki,
Angry young man again ... but this time, not a bubbly chirpy girl, but a girl as quiet as he is, as haunted by her past as he is ... while he wears his angst on his sleeve, she hides hers under a quiet exterior.

Casting is perfect ... Sanaya couldn't have gotten a bigger contrast to Khushi if she had tried ... and she had slipped into the role of Paro as though born for it. Ashish impressed from the first promo itself ... not classically good looking, but a harsher, more rugged exterior, which matches perfectly with the character he plays.

      Direction - check
Characterization - check. Off to a good start, the basic traits of both lead characters clearly laid down, as of the chief antagonist, the Thakur.
DOP - check ... fantastic! The locales of Rajasthan captured beautifully from the first shot to the last ... doing justice to the beauty of the place.

Ashish is a dedicated actor, he has no BW dreams, so hopefully this time we will see the full story that has been promised to us.

I second you .. perhaps our collective prayers and good wishes for Sanaya and a good story have been answered ... let's keep fingers crossed for this one! Hope the catapults Sanaya and the whole team to an even higher pinnacle of success than they have achieved before.

  2. I am really enjoying this show..i am so glad Sanaya agreed to do this one...she is fantastic!! i loved her in IPK but like her even more here...and its only been a week!!

The IPK fanatic in me remembered Arnav getting shocked hearing about Khushi's engagement when Rudra turned around and looked at her when he heard about her byah...

Looking forward to next week!! did not think i would say it again after IPK :)

    1. Same goes to me. Nothing in the past 12 months made me to sit before TV like RR has done. I hope the RR teams delivers what they intended to. They have taken time to develop and the hard work that has been went behind has paid off. Last five episodes has impressed many beyond doubt.

Dia!! next week will have more fire works indeed. I'm eagerly looking forward. I'm so happy to watch this show with your takes. It made me enjoy IPK. Thanks for ur takes. I wish this show turns to be a huge success for all those who involved. I'm so happy for Sanaya. She deserves it:)

    2. Good to see the gang slowly trickling back!!! Rangrasiya has caught eyeballs all right ... the lavish start has ensured that. Now let's hope the makers can keep out attention hooked with the characters and the story. It's good to hear from Saurabh Tewari's interviews that he realises the story is indeed the key to success .. he has the actors who look their parts and can deliver perfectly, he has a great team in place, including ace director and dialogue writer (not so sure about Gautam Hegde here, he's pretty standard, but the rest are very, very good at their craft) ... so wishing Rangrasiya all the very best ... and Sanaya even more so!!!

      Looking forward to next week!!!

  3. Loved the epi and your take as usual. Anyone find the fact that Rudra carries Paro over the fire intriguing? Wonder if there is symbolism there. Loved that they used the butterfly to kind of circle back to the last time Paro was happy before the storm hit. Loving the show and fingers crossed for it to break all records. :)

    1. Enkay ... that was a good catch! The last time Paro saw the butterfly was when she was happy, just before the storm hit and she lost her parents.

This time also, she is happy, looking forward to the start of a new life ... and another storm has hit ... the entry of Rudra into her life.

Don't know about the symbolism about Rudra carrying Paro over the fire ... maybe it indicates that whenever there is danger in her life, he will be there to carry her to safety? I really hope that instead of the usual push-pull type of violent romance, they show a Rudra, who, despite his demons about beautiful women, CAN NEVER bring himself to hurt Paro even the slightest, and is always there as her protector, by her side whenever she goes through trials of fire.

Though from the new SBS, that seems too much to hope for :(

But the fact that he abandoned his duty of chasing after the two men in the tempo, to run back to rescue Paro, does indicate that he will start putting her above his duty soon enough.

" I really hope that instead of the usual push-pull type of violent romance, they show a Rudra, who, despite his demons about beautiful women, CAN NEVER bring himself to hurt Paro even the slightest, and is always there as her protector, by her side whenever she goes through trials of fire." beautiful aspect there, dia!

    3. That's the one thing I'm hoping for, but I don't know yet whether I will get, Jaya. Most angry young man-beautiful young girl stories have this element of manhandling and hero abusing the heroine ... IPK, QH, MB, all have been there, done that. If Rangrasiya can avoid that from the very beginning, and show a man who is sensitive and instinctively protective, and cannot ever bring himself to hurt a woman, no matter what the provocation, that will make it truly different ... and will also be a wonderful message to convey.

The first Rudra-Paro scene, when he abandons the chase after the goons, to run back because Paro is in danger from the fire, did kindle my hopes ... but telly cv's don't usually have so much sensitivity, and often fall back manhandling and humiliating women to show how macho their heroes are. So let's see.

I liked Vistaa's take too ... about Rudra's thoughts and actions.

There are a few other takes on the forum, relating the Shiva Parvati story to the Rudra-Paro one ... will post those links here. Very good read.

  5. One week over and quite an impression RR has made. What is most encouraging is that industry insiders are tweeting about and giving it a thumbs up. The cinematography, music, direction, acting are good, dialogues are good too though the accent is the only issue some are pointing to. I am sure soon even that will be mastered by the actors.

Sanaya and Ashish have been cherry picked for this role and their chemistry is palpable. I agree with Sanaya that this role will help her grow more and so will sharing screen space with Ashish. So, glad GC refused this show.

Another concern I am seeing is that Paro may not get as much attention from writers and not be as well defined as Rudra. Right now I think it is too early to draw such a conclusion, the SBS clip makes me feel that after all that she will be put through, the character of Paro will definitely see a growth. Sanaya said Paro will have lots of ups and downs, and falling in love with your husband's killer and make peace with it is not going to be easy. Of course it will be a while before we see this. Rudra had a dramatic, filmy entry so he will definitely capture the imagination of the viewers right now.

There are also the side stories of Rudra and his father, Rajmata and Thakur, Rajmata and Paro, waiting to see how they develop. Another character of Laila is making an entry too.

The show has a good cast and I liked the interviews of both the channel head and ST where they emphasized the importance of writing and a good story. So, hoping this time round we will get a complete story and Sanaya finally gets her due recognition.

  6. Telly Tadka review ... posting here because it is a good in-depth review

    http://tellytadka.blogspot.in/2014/01/a-tellytadka-review-is-rang-rasiya-next.html

Is Rangrasiya the next big thing on TV?

Ever since the promos went on air it has been touted as the next big thing on TV and finally on 30th November 2013 Colors most awaited and anticipated show Rang Rasiya hit the Screens and our first reaction was “WOW”. What rolled out before our eyes left us spellbound. The beauty of Rang Rasiya does not lay in just one or any factor; it’s the balanced blend of each and every aspect associated with the show that makes Rang Rasiya one of a kind. Rang Rasiya is the love story of Rudra and Parvati (Paro) with patriotism as it’s’ backdrop. Five episodes down the back-story has been established, the characters are introduced and a small peek into their characteristics are also shown.

The best thing about RR has two distinct stories which will go on to become one story in the future. The RR team has made it evident that both the characters, the emotions and feelings they are going through, their stories and the imprints left by the tragedies (Paro losing her parents and Rudra's mother abandoning him) in their lives will be explored with equal importance. Every other character, every element of the story contributes to the stories of Paro and Rudra. Only having characters that are complete opposite of each other does not account for making a hit Love-Hate Saga. One story over-shadowing the other does not help either, what pulls the crowd and holds their interest throughout; especially when it comes to a love-story is when both the protagonists have their own stories and when that story crosses path with each other without overshadowing the other and then goes on to become one.

Here Rudra has a story, Paro has a story and the two have crossed paths but without overshadowing the other. Even the elements that make these stories be it the props, the BG Scores, the FB's etc are also distinct and unique to Rudra and Paro; and define them. Take the entry sequence of both the leads for instance when Paro is shown the whole ambiance, the lighting's, the settings and shots have a more colorful and vibrant feel whereas when Rudra is shown we see the use of more subtle shades, dim lighting's and nothing but the vast dessert and Rudra riding his bike all alone. Another example would be the BG Score used for either of them for Paro (Most of the time) it is the soft, melodious Kamaycha (Sarangi) version of RangRasiya is used while when Rudra is shown the "Rang Rang Rang Rasiya" version is used. Even the dessert which plays an important role in Rang Rasiya has been captured differently when it comes to Paro and Rudra reflecting their personalities. The makers have not only managed to show the difference between Rudra and Paro; but in a span of 5 episodes they have also managed to interweave their lives together. Look at the irony Paro hates the BSD because they were responsible for her parent's death and Rudra despises beautiful women because his father has embedded some very strong feelings in him when his mother abandoned him.

    1. Contd ...

Director Siddharth Sengupta is class apart when it comes to shooting outdoors, he has done it earlier with Balika Vadhu and Gulal and once again he goes on to create magic with Rang Rasiya. Every frame of Rang Rasiya speaks volumes of the director's vision and his vision is captured to the “T” by D.O.P's Sanjay Memane and Anil Katke. Those marvelous shots of the somber desert which hides beneath it 1000's of untold stories are captivating and feels like it has a life of its own. The shots of the ethnic architectural buildings, the temples, exotic lakes etc are nothing in short of a Visual Enigma; in fact it’s hard to name a series on Indian TV with such amazing outdoor shots and camera work in general in the recent past. When RangRasiya's 2.30 mins long trailer was released it looked nothing short of a Bollywood Trailer. Saurabh Tewari thinks Big like Cinema Big but with RR he has managed to deliver. One can say beyond a shadow of doubt that the team that has come together has managed to achieve the cinematic "look" of the show.

Ashish's introductory scene which happens to be a fragment from Paro's dream was very impressive. Though his face wasn't revealed his impeccable body language did most of the Job. Whether it was jumping off from the camel, or shifting his shawl and then walking with the rifle it all screamed MAJESTIC! To make that kind of an impact without revealing the face is more than commendable. Ashish Sharma plays BSD Officer Rudra Pratap Ranawat. Playing an angry young man in the show Ashish is required to keep this intense, brooding look in most of the scenes but that does not stop Ashish from limiting the scope of his performance. For instance the scene where Rudra is informed that he is being transferred to Birpur a small village next to his; the way his expression changes, the way emotions flit across his face can be comprehended with utmost ease inspite of that being a dimly lit shot. Looks like there can be more to the interpretation of the angry young man than just having the constant brooding expression. There is only one phrase to describe Sanaya's Introduction-"Poetry in Motion". She looks extremely breathtaking as Paro and as of now is the only major character in the show that brings innocence to the table. She is sensitive, timid, soft spoken etc and Sanaya does an effortless job in slipping into the character of the extremely delicate and demure like Paro. Not once does she remind the viewers of the characters she has essayed earlier. There couldn't have been a better actor from the current lot to essay the character of Paro.

The costumes by Ritu Deora and team is absolutely stunning and well differentiated, Sanaya’s Lehenga Choli, Thakurain’s Saree’s, Rudra’s Casural Wears etc define the characters. The art direction by Sumit Mishra is splendid. The Music by Lalit Sen and Shaleen Sharma is soulful, the title song by Saurabh Kalsi is one of the best we have had in recent times and the BG Score by Ashish Rego is a character in itself. The action director Amar Shetty is doing great. The sequence where Rudra hunts down the 5 terrorists who killed their Jawan’s and the one where Rudra saves Paro from the goon, specifically the one where he pulls the driver from his seat and thrashes him onto the ground.... Stupendous!!! Doing action effortlessly and with great élan is not everybody’s cup of tea; well Ashish outshines himself in the actions sequences.

Dialogues by Raghuvir Shekawat are good but the rural dialect is yet to be mastered by the actors. Be it Sanaya Irani (Paro), Tarun Khanna (Takur Tejawat), Sadiya Siddiqui (Thakurain) etc everybody is straining a bit to deliver the dialogues in the authentic way and hence this is one an area that needs to be worked upon. The prolonged slow motions seqs are another thing can be done without except when completely inevitable to the script.

So far the Nautanki Films have done an Impressive Job; they have truly pushed boundaries of Daily Fiction with their newest offering. The production value of this NF Venture has raised the benchmark for TV shows. The show is a must watch for Director- Siddharth Sengupta's direction, the cinematography by Sanjay Memane-Anil Katke and the actors Ashish Sharma's and Sanaya Irani's performances. Rang Rasiya is sure to become a Blockbuster as long as they stick to the story, and not take away from it by adding unnecessary twists which would hamper the show than enhance its quality. The bar the RR Team has set is really high and if they can even come close to the visual and narrative storytelling perfection as in they managed to do in the week that passed by then half the battle is won.

TellyTadka wishes the cast and crew of Rang Rasiya all the best!!!
