Back after a hectic but wonderful holiday

Note (12/1/13) - photographs of our African safari have been added on the website Autumn Sonata. This is the first batch, many more are to come, as well as the commentary. Enjoy - and do post comments!
And what a great way to return to the civilized world and the internet ... to find news of Sanaya's comeback already out. I did say mid-Jan

So first the only confirmed show at the moment - the Welcome Baazi Mehmaan Nawaazi on Life OK. A cooking reality show, hosted by Ram Kapoor, Sanaya is taking part. Hellooo? I thought Sanaya can't cook? Oh well, what does that matter - she will be back on screen, and the show sounds like fun.
Next ... rumours are rife about her return with a fiction show as well. So far, the strongest rumors are about another 4 Lions show on Life OK, with Avinash Sachdev.

And apparently in my absence, SBS/Chugalkhor Aunty also said that Sanaya has two offers up her sleeve - one from Life Ok and one from SP. Don't know whether the SP offer was for the SLB show - in which case, that offer is nixed, as latest reports say Jennifer Winget is back to doing SLB. But is that the offer Sanaya had? Or is there another one? Hope the latter - I would prefer Sanaya to return on SP, rather than on Life OK ... if she has to take the 4 lions offer, let that show shift to Star Plus. SP desperately needs a show to retain their international audience that they had captured with IPK .. so far, none of their new shows is filling that huge gap.
But latest news is that Sanaya has not yet signed the dotted line for the 4 Lions show - and has refuted the rumors rather strongly. She hasn't even said that 'nothing is finalized yet' ... her usual line if talks are going on.

And I still clearly remember Rajan and Sanaya's statements during the LA trip that she was already in talks for a new project, as well as one series of articles after IPk wrapped up, that Sanaya was flooded with offers and was finally at a stage in her career where she was in the position to choose what she wanted to do next.

Poor girl, she's obviously fed up with the never ending question of why the show shut down. Can't say it was because of crazy fans, because crazy fans will bash her for telling it like it is ... can't say Star Plus was a fool and made a random stupid knee-jerk decision, because SP or Star, was her employer, and probably either still is or will be ... has to defend both Barun and Gul ... Sanaya, just sign a new show soon, then the talk will shift to your show and IPK will be forgotten.

I saw the adverts for Welcome in offc and I swear the moment I realized San was in it I remembered you Dia!! Rofl!!
ReplyDeleteHonestly doubt SP will let go of San...though Life Ok is their channel they will want to hold on to her for SP...btw the highest rated shows on telly right now...Balika 4.9, DABH 4.5, YRKKH 4.5, Saathiya 4.5, Tark Mehat 4.0, Sasuraal Simar Ka 3.8.....PUKE!!! Indian telly is degenerating and if TRP are any indication theres gonna be more kitchen drama telly:-(
As for Barun I know he's taking a break but he should really sign some movies ASAP...he and producers who want to cast him should really cash in on his current popularity...fame is a fickle friend...especially telly fame...

DeleteI swear I had the SAME thought when I saw the highest TRP ranking shows ... like, do I even care, or WANT Sanaya's new show to rank high on TRP charts?! Don't want her in a saas bahu show or kitchen drama for sure! I wonder if she will stick with SP ... is she still in contract with Star, considering that Life OK is a Star channel and both Welcome and the rumored new show are on it. Should think so, but on the other hand, Star should try to get her back on the main channel rather than Life OK ... the reach of Life OK is limited compared to SP, and Sanaya is their brightest international draw. If they want to retain the international viewers they captured with IPK, then that's the type of show they need ... traditional yet with a strong contemporary flavour ... and go all out for the overseas market. Nani and ASR were the epitome of that blend of modernity, besides Khushi herself, of course ... Zoya in QH is not able to bring about that blend of traditional and yet strong-minded independent thinking girl that Sanaya managed to do so effortlessly with Khushi.
But I do want a strong heroine-oriented subject for her new show ... considering that IPK never had either kitchen politics or saas bahu drama, and yet stayed in the top ten for most of the duration, can't help hoping Sanaya gets another show like that again.
Barun has signed one more movie, hasn't he? A cricket based one ... he's not taking a break, he's starting workshops for it in Jan itself.

I don't watch any of these shows regularly.
I feel the only show that deserves to be there is BaalikaVadhu.
YRKKH- which I am forced to watch since SP took off Khamoshiyaan from the 11:30 REPEAT..is actually looking better than Madhubaala. Yesterday was about the couple celebrating Teej (They are celebrating all the festivals that the family missed out on the past 4 years)I caught the last 5 minutes...the romance between Akshara and Naitik was sweeeet- ...and all done without even one pleat in her saree out of place. *applause*
DABH- I guess everyone is fed up of the hide n'seek games- the promos promise that Suraj will tell bhaabho the truth.
SNS: Actually the only time I have felt the show was cute was when Rashi brought the two puppies...watched this scene where she tries to refuse the ice cream to one puppy and in the end gives in...and then came the dialogue: It is true that motherhood involves a lot of scarifice!!! That was very refreshing for a saas bahu saaga.
I guess we are all hoping that Sanaya should choose something on Star Plus- Life OK is too limited for her.

padfoot, missed you! the TRP ratings reflect a tiny slice of india.. until and unless that is corrected, we cannot determine what the majority of india watches. so i hope india is in better hands than those serials you mentioned.
Dia, are you busy writing the travelogue? do write it, for your website.. i love it when you write about something you are passionate about..it clearly shows in your writing, and it will be a pleasure to read :D

DeleteI am waiting eagerly to see what Sanaya picks. Caught some conversation on IF where apparently she was asked if she would a Maanvi type character (WHY the HECK would she play such a brattish character?!) and she said, no, because it would be too much like Khushi.
So she obviously will make sure she doesn't do a Khushi-type character again .. which means, either she does the 4 lions show and they do a 360 on their usual heroine stereotype, or she does a different show. She has done the usual quiet, weepy shy type - Gunjan.
So the two ends of the spectrum she has already done, two opposite characters in terms of personality, the only similarity between Gunjan and Khushi was that they were both small town girls coming into a big city and falling for a big city guy. Coincidentally, both Samrat and Arnav were far more wordly-wise, especially in terms of the fair sex, Samrat was an out-and-out flirt, and Arnav was an older, more experienced guy.
So now what will Sanaya do? She said in LA that she won't do a saas bahu show for sure, she also seemed to indicate not a rom-com ... IPK didn't start off as a rom-com, though it became one somewhere along the way when the intensity lessened. But no saas-bahu, no rom-com.
The Cinevistas show Daag, is based on Khoon Bhari Maang, which in turn was based on Return to Eden, an Australian TV series. It is totally heroine-centered - that would be a good show for her. But so far no news about that at all.
No whispers even of any other show - I have heard that SP is worried about the failure of Khamoshiyan and Kaali (how on earth they EVER thought Kaali would take off in IPK's slot beats me!), so they are doing a rethink on their entire lineup of shows. I hope that Sanaya features prominently in their plans ... especially if they want to retain their international audience. PKDH is more like IPK in terms of visual appeal and general feel of the show, and that is doing reasonably well. But the younger jodi has no chemistry whatsoever, and nowhere near the acting chops of San and Barun, so it will never become the craze that IPK was. I think the makers have either realised that, or they are far wiser than 4 Lions, so their story is far better balanced, between the two families and the entire cast, and the Adi-Pankh jodi has much less screen space than Arhi did.
I actually made notes on my iPad during my trip, so I will write about my trip on the other blog on the website - Musings :) Will do next week onwards, as my daughter is still here, just for a week more. So am totally caught up with her these days and loving every moment of it :) But the trip was fantastic, and I'm looking forward to writing about it ... it will be a great way to keep the memories intact. And my husband will post the pictures once he's sorted them out.

Delete(dont know if you ladies have ever seen Ankahi and Tanhaeyan - both had the same actress called Shenaz sheikh and she was superb in both roles - both being poles apart, both were real characters and very well sketched out - SI is of that caliber - hope she gets just as good a mix of roles)
Mona, am hoping this is just for the promo. Don't think in the show they will have food throwing. Sanaya is in a long dress in both promos - not KKG style, I think she's completely Sanaya here.
DeleteI have seen both the shows you mentioned - have forgotten them, it was a long time ago, but I remember the actress was very pretty and very good. These were Pak plays, weren't they? My favorite was Dhoop Kinarey though, I watched it when I was a medical student - very close to life, so that probably had a lot to do with it.

ReplyDeleteI am hoping that Sanaya does do a serial on Star Plus because living in Gibraltar we have a limited amount of TV channels. I miss the daily chats, and just reading all the comments made.
I have been watching a bit of Adi and Pankuri but it just doesn't have the same pull as IPK had. The performances just don't have any spark but I will carry on watchindg till something else comes along and we can start out chats again.

DeleteI'm also hoping that Sanaya comes back on Star Plus and not on Life OK, mainly because Star Plus is a much bigger platform, and has a wider reach. She's reached a certain stage in her career that she is now very much mainstream tv actress, she shouldn't have to go to a smaller channel, especially not after such a huge hit show.
Am also hoping that the reason she said in that TC interview that she hasn't yet started discussions on any new show is just that ... she has received offers but is yet to make a decision.
So here's hoping to get news of her soon ... I'm also missing the daily chats and discussions. Nothing else on TV is really worth discussing these days.

I thought that if i give it enough time, this "fangirling about a TV serial " nasha will fade.. but every time i see something like this, the whole ehsaas of the addiction is back. five minutes of this video.. and i spend the whole day in a haze. sometimes i wonder if they were paid to make these VMs.. that made everything far more intense than the actual episodes.. if not, they should have been.. because it increased the TRP of the show , at least on IF, i am sure. and sometimes i wonder how amazing is this time we live in, when someone can improve on another person's work so much, even from another part of the globe.

the gang.. even their offscreen masti was something amazing.. made us love them more, even in case they were acting for the tabloid cameras..
They were really cute together, weren't they? They all seemed to have so much fun. Love the way Nani also joined in the frisbee throwing ... that's something I really liked after reading the Nani and Buaji interviews, that even the older cast members were all included in the masti.

Jaya, thanks! I missed the entire Starlite Birmingham set of episodes - was still out on holiday the first two, and out with family for the third ... these were needed! Sanaya is a natural on stage ... she has such presence! So has Kokila ben, I have to say :P She managed to stay in character right through her anchoring .. good job! Barun's Gangnam style was awful, so was that pink pant/yellow shirt combo ... poor guy, what did they do to him?! He's just a regular sweet guy - that essence comes through on stage.
DeleteViraf ... well, I loved Kismat, it was a very well made telly show, and Viraf was excellent in that - very impressive. Try that and you might change your mind. Can't judge him on the basis on one interview - although what interested me most in that clip you posted was the date (11th Jan) the fact that he still has not appeared in Kaali, and that he refused to say anything about appearing in Kaali at all. So I am continuing to hope for a Sanaya-Viraf pairing, till we get final confirmation of her new show and get firm news to the contrary :P
