21st Jan 2013 Monday
Welcome airs at 2 am here, so I will watch the episode tomorrow morning Looking forward to watching Sanaya on screen again! Depending on what the show is like, will make daily or weekly posts ... probably I will post as long as Sanaya is in the show, and go back to general update once her part ends.
Monday - Episode I - Love this girl, but either the whole thing was scripted, or a good part of it was ... cannot believe that Sanaya would fall off to sleep before a party she was hosting! Guess they had to make her do something controversial, otherwise she's too sweet to indulge in the bitching - that was left for Ragini and Nigar! Of the four guests, didn't care for Andy at all, Manoj ditto ... Nigar was out to criticise - seriously - stone in pasta???!!! Ragini was loud and bindaas ... her interactions with Nigar seemed scripted too.
More later ... Sanaya really showed what a genuinely sweet person she is ... hosting could have been a lot better, but she tried, and accepted all comments, deserved and undeserved, with a smile. She had the toughest time, being the first.

Critical review - Ram Kapoor was there only for the introduction.
Four contestants were introduced, of whom I knew only Sanaya.
Hadn't heard of Andy - he came across as very pompous and full of himself.
Hadn't heard of Manoj - he came across as a bit ignorant, and determinedly so.
Had heard of Nigar, hadn't seen her before - she came across as fake and not very nice.
Sanaya - is not Khushi! not in terms of being perfect Indian bahu, expert in cooking and everything else. She came across as Sanaya :)
Shopping - at roadside vegetable stall, haggling for veggies ... no one told you that you're a TV superstar, Sanaya?! Apparently not. Gotta love this girl!
Cooking with iPad propped up in the veggie basket ... considering I just spent last evening googling chocolate cake, and had it ready to carry into the kitchen to use, this struck an immediate chord!
Hosting skills -
Critical review - not being ready in time for guests because she went to sleep, guests who are coming for the first time, and whom she didn't know at all, then asking Nigar to greet the rest while she changed ... a big 'no no'.
Sanaya fangirl review - Oh come on! This was obviously scripted! No way Sanaya went off to sleep with a camera peering into her face!
Critical review - Not having any drinks besides water - another 'no no'. Should keep at least a couple of juices and some nibbles for early arrivals while waiting for everyone to arrive.
Sanaya fangirl review - *silence*
Menu - was totally to my taste. Who wants to go to someone's house and eat dal chawal?! Soup, bruschettas, two main dishes - veg and non-veg, and two desserts - one with and one without alcohol.
Critical review - if you have a Continental menu, must have some breads and butter on the side, as well as a fresh tossed salad.
Sanaya fangirl review - that would also have shut up Manoj and his incessant demands for tomatoes.
Critical review - host does not ask to be entertained. Should have had some music playing, and since it was a first meeting for everyone, organised a simple ice-breaker game like twenty questions, or quizzing the guests about each other, which don't need much preparation.
Sanaya fangirl review - she was tired and a bit upset with the constant barbed and downright insulting remarks, am betting that she will say nothing of the sort in anyone else's homes. She was definitely not in her element, am guessing she has never had such obnoxious guests, who manage to find stones in pasta, refuse to eat mushrooms - that part is fine, but to call them kukkurmutta as though accusing your host of having harvested those very mushrooms for your table is pretty rude behaviour.
Desserts - were good, and everyone liked them. Obviously, the one thing Sanaya loves, she made well. As happens with all cooks. Including myself in that bracket - of people who enjoy making desserts the most :)
Guests - Andy was obnoxious, didn't like him at all. Far too full of himself. Manoj seemed to take pride in being ignorant and wanting to remain so. His remarks about a nearby restaurant in the end really lowered him in my eyes. If you don't eat in someone's house, go home and fill your stomach, don't ask for a restaurant. Nigar - Ragini's catfight seemed totally scripted, Ragini was a bit loud and brash, and Nigar took offence very easily. Loved the way Ragini supported Sanaya - Sanaya has some good friends in the industry, and they all seem to be the same genuine type as Sanaya herself.
Finally I loved the way they all gave Sanaya marks for her sweet personality, if not for her cooking. Felt bad for her being constantly insulted and her efforts belittled - I really hope most of it was scripted, I would never invite such guests for a second time in my home!
And I bet Sanaya took the first shot at being host just to get it over with, so that she could concentrate on enjoying the rest of the week of eating!
Sanaya fangirl review - And so am I ... can watch the rest of the Sanaya episodes without worrying about her being insulted. Such a pleasure to watch her on screen again, and to see that the sweetness she reflects in her face and her eyes is so genuine.
Edit - Sanaya is on the January cover of Zing!

i watched it.. will reserve comment until you post the review.
ReplyDeleteHeyya Jaya ... I watched it too ... Total 6mins .... You will roll eyes if you get to know why ;)
ReplyDeleteSanaya looked cool, smart and classy yo !! Seemed they marked her not that.
She with a very sweet smile said she cannot cook and that she is tired so guests should entertain her.
Welcome - Baazi Mehmaan Nawazi Ki !!

ReplyDeletemy heart just stopped and died after this video.. perfection!!
I haven't gotten round to watching and looooooooooooooved your take Dia.
ReplyDeleteso now that you have formed your opinion.. I HATED it. this sort of cheap kitchen politics should not get a place in television. and mixing up four total strangers for entertainment purposes never ended well. and it was almost completely scripted and hotchpotch edited. the host slept till the guests came.. and made the early guest welcome the others ? the lady flirts with the whatzisname in the leather vest and feeds him pebbles?? the guests are unimpressed by sanaya's table settings.
ReplyDeletethe menu.. welcome drink : mushroom soup.. that got my alarm bells ringing right there. everyone knows that a welcome drink is not soup. (or should know.) the rude one asks for a tomato, to eat because he's not drinking the soup and host has no other options. the mushroom soup turns out inedible. the dinner conversation turns out to be undigestible.. live in relationships? catfights? divorced and never told his mom? (and now he's announcing it on national television?)
bruschetta.. great choice as nibbles. and everyone liked it. Coq au vin.. good. pasta dish.. harrumpf. how can there ever be a stone in pasta? the rude one wants dal chawal. he could have stayed at home, for all the 'entertainment' he brought to the table. dessert.. the hit of the day. tell you the truth, i did not watch till the end.. simply could not watch.
through it all, the show was trying to highlight sanaya as an irresponsible yuppie trying all the continental dishes, with a fancy-sounding menu.. she was unprepared, she does not know how to cook, she does not make provisions for guests with dietary restrictions.. (all in all, was that an attempt at contrasting with a party-planning, parlour-going 'housewife'? will wait and watch. ) through the whole ill feeling set up, sanaya managed to keep her cool and be nice and caring and genuine.. if she was acting, she is a better actress than the others there. if that was real, i want her for a friend.
p.s. loved the apron :)
Actually, I did not mind the show one bit even though it looked scripted. It highlighted Sanaya's personality. She is easy going, so much of it was believable. Loved how she got the guests to entertain her- they all had fun- that was the point.
ReplyDeleteI thought the guests were a bunch of weirdos except for Ragini.
They got what they deserved. And I really don't care what they thought of her.
I think I will watch it only for Sanaya's segment.
I have to say I am wary of watching reality shows, cos you know a lot is scripted so I might just give this one a miss or watch it much much later.
ReplyDeleteI won't say I hated it ... but yeah, I don't like reality shows, and this reminded me why I don't ... they're all pretty fake and scripted. Sanaya and Ragini were the only two who came across and nice people, the other three I wouldn't care to even meet!
ReplyDeleteWill watch it this week as long as Sanaya is there ... I would have liked to see more of Sanaya-Ram-Ragini interactions, but Ram is missing!
Watched the second day at Ragini's house- Boy!Ragini has no patience at all- she got better marks than Sanaya even though her food was disappointing.
ReplyDeleteThey are not even giving San screen space because she is not bitchy...it is a mistake they cast her. LOL.
ROFL ... true, Sanaya cannot be bitchy to save her life ... even her criticisms are limited to the food per se and not to the host, and she is generous in her praise and her marking. But that's her ... she was the same in Meethi Churri, the other girls were all backbiting and bitching about Rashmi, and Sanaya was quiet. She's there to enjoy the food, that's all! And I don't think she was that bad in terms of her menu, it was a fairly standard Continental dinner menu, she did go wrong in a few things, but I think only her soup was a disaster, the rest of the food seemed okay, and her desserts were a hit.
DeleteI'd also like to tell Nigaar that when you cook in wine, the alcohol evaporates and only the flavour is left :)
But also San was the first host, so wasn't prepared for what everyone expected. I wouldn't lay on karaoke or a singer as entertainment for a dinner, but I have lots of music at home, so I'd use that, or organise simple party games or a dance party, that's what I'm used to doing. Or just start off with Antakshari - an evergreen favorite in most Indian do's.
those who could not watch welcome, here are links.. sorry, did not look around for HQ ones..

Watched second and third days ... Ragini-Nigar are at daggers drawn, Manoj is a pain in the butt - Bhojpuri superstar?! Really?! He acts like a tinpot dictator of a swamp, with all those airs about his daal chawal roti! If he just wanted that why did he even sign up for this?!
ReplyDeleteRagini's menu was much less elaborate than Sanaya's, and she got more marks ... that was not quite fair. Same with Andy - though I'd give him marks for having a crazy theme to break the ice. But otherwise Andy is weird ...

ReplyDeleteWelcome takes the lead on Life OK's shows in UK :)))
Waiting for the TRP's next week, and also to see how Welcome sustains when Sanaya is not there next week.
Updated more links in the main post - Sanaya on Zing magazine cover, and her interview with the TB/IF team talking about the shoot. Love the way she ends with telling - no, commanding her fans to buy the magazine and make it the best ever selling issue ... Sanaya has this habit of talking to her fans and the camera as though they are her best friends and buddies!
ReplyDeleteAlso updated teaser of Sanaya's upcoming interview with Gul Khan on forum32 ... is Gul changing professions to become journo? Seems like it! :P
Hope they talk about Sanaya's plans for the future, her upcoming shows and choices, and when she hopes to return. Really don't want more re-hash of IPKKND and why it ended - whatever she says, she ends up getting bashed for being forthright and speaking her mind. I would rather hear more about her relations with the other members of the team, including Daljeet, Utkarsha, Jayshree T, Abhaji, Akshay - they all seem to be so fond of her, and she of them.
have to see ROFL bit.. sanaya singing
