Rangrasiya launch

Launch of Rangrasiya in Jaipur .. fitting, as the shooting of the show has mainly been in Rajasthan till now. So many articles today ... will take a while to update!

First of all, the Rangrasiya poster ... fabulous! Love the colors ... elemental, earthy, raw, dramatic ... the explosion of fire and smoke behind the lead couple over a background of harsh pitiless desert terrain ... Rudra - cold, ruthless, unyielding ... Paro - delicate beauty, a hint of steel behind a vulnerable outer facade.

Shades of grey never seem to leave Ashish Sharma when it comes to his television roles. After making his debut with Gunahon Ka Devta, Ashish went on to play a not-so-good guy in Rab Se Sohna Isshq. His upcoming small screen venture Rang Rasiya will see him play yet another sombre role, that of Rudra, an armyman with a mission. The actor, who hails from Jaipur, spoke about the experience of shooting in his hometown and the method behind the madness of his onscreen persona.

    Homecoming for Ashish
After an extensive shooting schedule amid the sand dunes of Bikaner, Ashish is recovering from heavy congestion in his chest and is gearing up to start promoting his show. Talking about shooting in Rajasthan, Ashish says, "It was like homecoming for me, I could spend so much time in my state. Also Rajasthan is a very integral part of the narrative. The whole conflict happens across the border. It's a love story but with a different angle to it." Always ready to experiment with his image and persona, Ashish is playing an aggressive Border Security Force officer Rudra in the serial, which is inspired byShakespeare's Othello. Though the role has a villainous streak in it, Ashish has no qualms in showing off the dark side of his character on screen. "This is not the first time that I am playing a grey character. I have been doing such roles ever since I started my career. Like any other human being, Rudra too has some shortcomings. It's not a colourful image. He is like a volcano, who is just waiting to erupt. Though he is in the army, he does not go by the rules and regulations," says Ashish, adding that this is no conventional love story.

Visiting the BSF headquarter in Jaipur
Being a theatre artiste, Ashish always likes to add his own inputs to the character he plays. And to make Rudra look more real, Ashish visited the BSF camp headquarter in Jaipur. "I met a few officials, observed their mannerisms - how they salute, talk and behave. It helped me a lot." Rudra is a very desolate and disconnected character, and to make it more real, Ashish used to sit near the window and gaze at the sky at night for hours. His method acting ended up scaring his actress wife Archana. "Just to get that look right, I used to sit near the window for hours. I didn't talk or react to anything. I stopped talking to my wife even, and, seeing this, she got very scared," he admits.

  2. New show on 'guns and roses' to go on air
IANS India Private Limited/Yahoo India NewsBy Indo Asian News Service | IANS India Private Limited/Yahoo India News

Jaipur, Dec 19 (IANS) A new fiction show titled "Rangrasiya', based on an intense love story between a village girl and an paramilitary force officer, will go on air December end.
The story revolves around Paro, a village girl played by Sanaya Irani, and Rudra, a Bharat Suraksha Dal officer portrayed by Ashish Sharma.

In the promos, currently being aired on Colors channel, one can see a team of Bharat Suraksha Dal (inspired by Border Security Force) killing few terrorists in Rajasthan.

"It's a story on guns and roses. It (the promos) might look harsh and serious, but we are making sure it is appealing and can be watched by family. The violence shown in 'Rangrasiya' is just 10 percent of what you see in films," Prashant Bhatt, weekday programming head, Colors said here Thursday during launch of the fiction show.

To be aired from Dec 30 onwards, the show has been produced by Abhinav Shukla and Saurabh Tewari of Nautanki Films.

Shukla says they have put in a lot of money to make the show.
"We have overspent from our side to give an edge in terms of quality and content. We shot 70 days in Jaisalmer. We have taken a chance by investing in the show. For first 10 episodes, we spent around Rs.5 crore," Shukla told IANS.

The managing director of Nautanki Films hopes "Rangrasiya" crosses at least 500 episodes, but it all depends on how the audience receives it.
"Right now we have one year contract with Colors. If everything goes well, we will produce more episodes," said Shukla.
The show will replace soon-to-end popular reality show "Bigg Boss - Saath 7" hosted by superstar Salman Khan.

  3. Sanaya positive about on-screen chemistry with Ashish

Posted on December 20, 2013 at 1:34 AM by IANS 0 Comments

Jaipur, Dec 20 - Sanaya Irani, whose previous show "Chhanchhan" reportedly missed the bull's eye due to lack of chemistry with her former co-actor Farhan Khan, is back with a new TV show "Rangrasiya" and she is not nervous about her co-star Ashish Sharma.

"I am not nervous because I have a fabulous actor opposite me. Ashish is amazing and I think I will learn so much from him. It is a very good feeling. It is very rare when you feel you will get to learn from somebody else. When there are two people good at their work in a scene, it can't go wrong," Sanaya told IANS during launch of "Rangrasiya" here Thursday.

The new fiction is based on an intense love story between a village girl named Paro, played by her and a Bharat Suraksha Dal officer Rudra portrayed by Ashish.

The actress, who has been part of shows like "Iss Pyaar Ko Kya Naam Doon?" that are based on love and hate relationship between protagonists, says her new show has that element but are not similar in any other way.

"Love and hate was there in another show of mine as well. But this character is different from what that character was. The story is completely different and so is Paro. It's not something that I've done before," she said.

Sanaya says unlike the bubbly roles that she has done in the past, this one is about a village girl, who is not strong right now but with time one can see lots of shades to her character Paro.

Shot in Rajasthan's Jaisalmer as well, the TV star with a thin frame faced lots of difficulties.
"Outdoor is always difficult. Firstly you wake up at odd hours like 4 in the morning. Then make-up. We shot for few days in Jaisalmer and it was hectic. It was very hot. My make-up would melt seven minutes from the time I stepped out from van and in Rajasthan there is hardly any
shade, so can't run away from sun. That was harsh but fun," said Sanaya.

She says she also lost weight while shooting in the desert area.
"I got burnt in the sun and lost a lot of weight. I have lost four kgs while shooting here. I was made to run over and over again on the sand and that is not easy.
"I was told to run fast, but you can't do that when the sand is sinking. And then I got angry because after all that running they showed it in slow motion," said the actress, who briefly appeared in superstar Aamir Khan and Kajol starrer-"Fanaa" in 2006.

After putting so much effort in the show, produced by Abhinav Shukla and Saurabh Tewari of Nautanki Films, she has high expectations from it.

"I will be shocked if this doesn't work out. Not because my career is going somewhere. I believe an actor is an actor whether you are in a flop or hit film, it doesn't matter. We have put in so much hard-work.

"Saurabh has done it on such a large scale. It's absolutely brilliant, the story is amazing and everything is right," she said.

"Rangrasiya" will be aired from Dec 30 onwards on Colors...

  4. Sanaya's interview -

    I suffered a
    language barrier

Sanaya Irani is a popular television actress best known for her role in the serial Iss Pyaar Ko Kya Naam Doon. After Hrs caught up with her as she promoted her upcoming soap Rangrasiya.

Sanaya Irani who has also shown her face in Bollywood, has played various lead roles in television shows like Miley Jab Hum Tum, and Chhanchhan and also participated in reality shows. In a candid conversation with After Hrs, she complained about wearing the traditional lehenga choli in this frosty climate, difficulties in speaking Rajasthani and falling in love with the local cuisine. "Me and Mohit (Sehgal) were preparing for Nach Baliye when I was offered to play Paro, the female lead in Rangrasiya," revealed Irani.

Mentioning that she has never come to Rajasthan befor, Irani said, "This is my first shoot here. My makeup was given a touch up every five minutes as I was sweating even in this chilly weather." When asked about female characters in daily soaps that convey bad messages, Irani protested by saying, "It's the society that fails to accept the truth. People are ashamed to see things on the small screen that happen in real life."

Talking about Rajasthani food, she said, "Being a food lover, how I could avoid the delicious stuff of Rajasthan? I did not get a chance to go to any dhaba in Jaisalmer during the shoot but was served chicken curry, prepared the local way, at my hotel room. I must accept it was yummy."

She faced difficulty while rehearsing her dialogues. Irani complained, "I suffered a language barrier during rehearsal. Few Rajasthani words were too difficult for me to pronounce while some bounced over my head."

    Colors Redefines Love with Rang-rasiya

~ Showcases a Powerful Theatrical Drama depicting the Destructive Nature of Love ~

RANGRASIYA DEBUTS ON 30TH DECEMBER, 2013, MONDAY TO FRIDAY AT 9.30PM

    Jaipur, December 19, 2013: Hatred… Betrayal... Deceit... Destruction…

These are words that we seldom associate with the warm feeling of love. With the launch of Rangrasiya, COLORS, for the first-time, redefines hate while exploring the mystique of love. Theatrically shot in the harsh rugged desert terrains along the boundaries of Rajasthan, Rangrasiya breaks away from the cult of conventional soaps, and sets out to negate all known perceptions of love. Produced by the makers of the blockbuster love story Madhubala…Ek Ishq Ek Junoon, Nautanki Films is all set to unveil yet another great saga with Rangrasiya that premieres on 30th December 2013, every Monday to Friday at 9.30PM, on COLORS.

Speaking about the show, Prashant Bhatt, Weekday Programming Head – COLORS, said, “We share a great working relationship with Nautanki Films and are looking forward to re-creating magic on screen with a gripping and edgy storyline like Rangrasiya. With the show, we wish to unravel a new narrative that captures every emotion including love, hate, joy, sadness, pain, guilt, bitterness, hope, aspiration, and vengeance. Through the compelling portrayal of the explosive relationship between Paro and Rudra who are inadvertently destined to meet, we hope our viewers will enjoy this unconventional love story presented to them.”

Rangrasiya is an edgy love story ignited by intense hatred and fuelled by circumstances that bring a simple village girl, Paro (Sanaya Irani) and army officer, Rudra (Ashish Sharma) together. For Rudra, love is need-based, beauty is deceit, and work is duty and for Paro, love is hope, beauty is extreme and duty is vengeance. The show has been shot extensively across arid terrains and rann of Jaisalmer and dunes of Jodhpur.

Speaking about the launch of his second venture on COLORS with Rangrasiya, Saurabh Tewari from Nautanki Films, said, “My association with COLORS goes back more than five years and the channel’s DNA is engraved in me. The USP of the show is that every character other than the heroine is grey; she has her own journey to endure. There is no villain, but every character is real in terms of characterisation. The hero does not confine to the usual norms that are seen on television today.”

Adding to this, Abhinav Shukla from Nautanki Films, said, “With the success of Madhubala on COLORS, we wanted to raise the bar for Rangrasiya in terms of the visual scale and narrative. From visual conceptualisation, to the scale and experimentation with the characters, everything is real.”

Speaking about her newest venture on television, Sanaya Irani aka Paro, said, “I took up Rangrasiya as a challenge because I was eager to experiment with my character as Paro; and it wasn’t really easy portraying her. Walking barefoot in the scorching desert gave me blisters on the soles of my feet, but that did not deter me in any way. The excitement to do something different enabled me to move on. I am thoroughly enjoying every moment while shooting for Rangrasiya and I hope that my fans will take delight as I reprise the role of Paro.”

Commenting on his role, Ashish Sharma aka Rudra, said, “For portraying the character of Rudra, my keyword was intense. Everything I did, even in my day-to-day life incorporated that sentiment. Rudra is a rebel in every aspect of the word. With my portrayal of Rudra, I hope to find the love of audiences through the despise they feel for my character. That will be my ultimate win!”

The story is set in Birpur, a small village that witnesses a grand wedding celebration between borders once every year. One such wedding is that of Paro that is gatecrashed by the BSD, led by Rudra to investigate the illegal smuggling of arms and ammunition. However as fate would have it, this incident shatters Paro’s life leading to an unexpected turn of events.

Rangrasiya boasts of a strong and dynamic ensemble cast which comprises of noted actors like Sadiya Siddiqui, Tarun Khanna, Ananya Khare and Neha Narang who will be seen supporting the lead pair of Sanaya Irani and Ashish Sharma on the show. Rangrasiya is directed by ace director Siddharth Sen Gupta of Balika Vadhu fame.

Come… Experience a Love that threatens to Destroy; as COLORS launches
‘Rang Rasiya’, starting 30th December, 2013, every Monday to Friday at 9.30PM!

  7. Ashish Sharma believes it's difficult to enter film industry
    IANS | Jaipur
December 20, 2013 Last Updated at 03:36 IST

Actor Ashish Sharma, best known for his roles in TV shows like "Rab Se Sohna Isshq" and "Chandragupta Maurya", has revealed that as he tried his luck in movies he found it was difficult to enter in the film industry.
He believes that getting TV assignments is easier than acting in films as the latter is dominated by children of established people in the industry.
Ashish, who made his small screen debut with "Gunahon Ka Devta" in 2010, had earlier featured in Dibakar Banerjee's "Love Sex Aur Dhokha". But he says entering the world of television is not as
    difficult as film industry.
"I started with a film. Around 80 percent of the films that are made today are either made with star's sons or producer's sons. So, yes, I believe TV is easier to break into as compared to film industry," he said here Thursday during the launch of his new show "Rangrasiya".
After establishing himself as a TV actor, he now has the liberty to do roles of his choice and has set certain standards.
"I wanted to do something better than what I've done in the past. People's expectations also increase with time. I've raised my bar, so had to take a project that reaches that level. We always see a trend on TV and others follow suit. I think 'Rangrasiya' will be a trend
    setter too," said Ashish.
Produced by Abhinav Shukla and Saurabh Tewari of Nautanki Films, the new Colors show is about intense love story between Paro, a village girl played by Sanaya Irani, and Rudra, a Bharat Suraksha Dal officer portrayed by him.
He describes his character as "real".
"The story is about love. It's fiction, but the characters are real. On TV, men (are) either too good or too bad, so they are unreal," he said...

  10. Portraying Paro's character was not a cakewalk for me'
    Richa Shukla,TNN | Dec 21, 2013, 12.00 AM IST

We caught up with Jaipur boy Ashish Sharma and actress Sanaya Irani braving the Jaipur winter at an event in the city recently. Braving the cold winter winds, the TV stars came decked up in the attire akin to their upcoming show Rangrasiya, but were soon forced to put on warm clothes as the event was in the open air.

Sanaya came all decked up in Rajasthani attire and jewellery, while her co-star Ashish was dresed as a BSF officer. Their new show is based in Rajasthan and the actors have been shooting amid sand dunes for a while now, battling the harsh weather conditions in the desert state.

Talking about her role, Sanaya said, "Portraying Paro's character was not a cakewalk for me as it is a demanding role. Nevertheless, I took up the challenge and did this role." Ashish, who hails from Jaipur, and is familiar with extreme weather conditions of Rajasthan, did not face much difficulty. For Sanaya, it was initially very tough to cope with the climate, but the actress decided to soldier on.

Talking about the difficulties she faced while shooting, Sanaya added, "Walking barefoot in the scorching desert gave me blisters on my feet, but that did not deter me in any way. The excitement to do something different just goaded me on. I am thoroughly enjoying every moment while shooting for Rangrasiya."

Ashish is equally upbeat about his role in the serial. He is playing a rebel, and said, "Rudra is a rebellious and headstrong character and I had to get under the skin of the character to make it look convincing."

  11. Rang rasiya is a passionate love story between a village girl Paro and a BSF officer Rudra Ranavat set in Rajasthan on Indo-Pak border. Rudra, a ruthless officer, for whom his duty is his religion carries an emotional baggage from past when his mother abandoned him and his father at the age of 12. His faith on relationship and women in general got shaken at a very young age which resulted into a man with no emotions or even love for himself. His mother abandoned his father and got married to someone else because she was a gorgeous lady and father an ugly looking man.
Paro has been brought up in a village wherein every second house has a story to mourn, and a single agenda in mind - hate BSF. Paro lost her parents in an operation conducted by security forces. But somewhere even after a tragic past she looks up to life and has a dream that one day there will be someone to love her.
Rang Rasiya is a story of two strong headed people who are poles apart, one who believes in love and the other who can kill someone who believes in love.

  12. Pink city mein Paro/E24 Seg [20 Dec.,2013]

Anchor - Well, shopping is done and now, about the look in the show. Ladies first, so, let us ask Sanaya what she has to say of her look, which is again very different from the earlier looks.

Reporter - Right now, I am at the Pink city, Jaipur and the one who is standing with me has also worn a pink costume. her name is Paro. Now who is this Paro and what is so special about the costume, let us know from her. This is Sanaya and welcome to the show.

Sanaya - Paro in pink... thank you, thank you.

Reporter- You have given a good introduction. Now we would like to know more.

Sanaya - People also call me 'Pagal Parsi' so PP and 'Pink Paro'.

Reporter - Let us talk about the character. You are back on TV with 'Rangrasiya'. So what is the character like??

Sanaya - The show is going to rock. I can say 100% that. it is made on a very large scale, the story is very nice, every actor is good, characters are good. I am now scared for myself, about my character or I don't want to praise myself. This is a very different character for me.

I am still trying to blend in. I am trying to get ab grip of this character as this character is very complex, unlike Rudra's character. Paro's character has a lot of complexities, there is a lot that she has to deal with. She sometimes laughs, sometimes cries, sometimes she is scared. So there is a lot. That is why maybe, I am unable to catch that one notch as yet. I am very close to it, so hopefully, it will be good.

Reporter - We will know more about the show and Sanaya's character. But as we have mentioned, we are in Jaipur, what would you say about the climate of Jaipur??

Sanaya - It is good as of now. A bit cold, we are standing in the sun, enjoying the sun. When we had come for the outdoor, it was not this cold. It was very hot and very difficult for us. I am liking this weather.

It has been a couple of days since we have been in Mumbai and have come back and there has been a sudden drop in temperature. And this feeling nice, than what we face in Mumbai, the heat, the pollution the noise.

Reporter - Your colleague id from Jaipur. Your co-star..so has he done anything special for you??

Sanaya - Nothing special at all, nothing. Ashish speaks only 50 words a day. I have booked 40 words, I said, speak the remaining 10 with anyone you want to. But at least speak 40 words with me.

Reporter - Talking about the character, about the look, you have been given a Rajasthani look, so how comfortable was it to look like this and what efforts were taken for the look??

Sanaya - I did not have to take any efforts. This is all hats off to our creative team and the stylist. They put it together. I am just an actor. I role play. Give me anything to wear and I will try to fit into it.

It was exciting for me as I have never had such costumes in any of my earlier shows. So, I am wearing a 'Ghagra choli' for the first time on TV. So I was happy as on Tv, there are limitations. Sarees, Salwar, Ghagra and Saree, Salwar, kind off, I have covered it. So now I am wearing a 'Ghagra' and it is feeling good.

Reporter - Talking of your look, you have been given a nathani ( Nose ring). So how much does sanaya like wearing the 'Nathani' ??

Sanaya - I like wearing the 'Nathani'. if I could pierce my nose, I would. I am very scared, if I could pierce a second hole on my ears also I would, but, I get very scared. I love the 'Nathani look'. I think it looks so earthy, so India. And it was necessary, the character is from a village and she has to look Indian, and I am trying my best to look as Indian as I can. So its good.

Reporter - Have you experimented with your hair as well??

Sanaya - Actually, here, we have experimented a lot with jewellery, they want to give it a different touch. And they have experimented very smartly. Like these 'Kamar bandh', they are different. Also with hair accessories they have experimented a bit. So, I am liking the look, enjoying it. It is taking some time, but it good.

Reporter - Did you not ask the makers why they named you Paro?? Are there any Devdas kind scenes because Paro is very famous for Devdas kind scenes??

Sanaya - I think people will now remember this Paro. Whenever anyone talks of Paro, they will say, 'Rangrasiya' ki Paro, not 'Devdas' ki Paro.

Reporter - We hope that after 'Devdas' ki Paro, you all will remember 'Rangrasiya' ki Paro.

  13. 'Rangrasiya' Press Conference/E24 Seg [21 Dec.,2013]

Anchor - And now we take you to the press conference of 'Rangrasiya', where, present with the satr cast of the show, were the makers of the show. All were informed about 'Rangrasiya'.

VO - Not yet, Mr. Rudra!! This was just a promo launch of the show. Paro has just as yet starting talking. You will have to hear her out through the show. Anyway, now let the audience also know what all this is about??

Well, this scene is from the launch of the show, 'Rangrasiya', which was launched by the lead couple of the show, Sanaya Irani and Ashish Sharma. Both looked very confident.

Ashish - No, I am not nervous as we know what we have done. So...so...

Sanaya - I am very nervous. I have no clue what I have done...

Ashish - I am not very nervous for their expectations, because, if I had not done well, then maybe I would have been nervous, but I am 100% sure that we have worked as per their expectations.

Sanaya - Yaa, I think when you know the product is good, I know...I am 100% sure ... I will be shocked if it doesn't work. I will be bummed... I will be like What!! You guys kidding me?? You'll didn't like this?? So, no, I am 100% sure.

VO - Present at the launch were the makers of the show too. After the success of the show, 'Madhubala', they are also expecting a lot form the new show to start on COLORS.

Production personnel - We are hoping that like 'Madhubala' got encouragement from the viewers, even ' Rangrasiya' will get. We have put in a lot of hard work in the show.

ST - Response is good. Many are saying, it looks like a film, such a huge scale it is being shot and promoted. But for me, it is the story and the characters which are unique.

VO - Let us inform you that the shows launch took place in Jaipur, where winter is setting in. And it is Sanaya who is the most affected by the cold. That is why she wore a jacket in the midst of the PC and was then seen enjoying the bonfire too.

Anyway, we are now waiting for the show to start and this is the same hope which the fans of Sanaya and Ashish also harbor.

  14. Rangrasiya Rudra ki Paro ka Bridal Look/E24 Seg [21 Dec.,2013]

Anchor - Now some talk about Rudra's Paro., being played by Sanaya Irani. Sanaya has adorned the bridal look and she is looking very beautiful. And what does she have to say about beauty, let us hear from her.

VO - After seeing beautiful Sanaya, the moon is obviously going to hide itself behind the clouds. Just look at her...is her beautiful face any less than the moon?? But the 'maang tika' on her forehead and the smile on her lips, the twinkle in her eyes and the bridal dress, and we wonder, why is Sanaya decked up like this??

Sanaya - She is dressing up for her marriage... for her husband... you will see in the episodes what is to happen. But, as of now, this is her wedding attire. I think, Paro gets married after a few episodes since the start of the show.

VO - Oh ho, so TV's Paro is dressed as a bride for her TV show. Well, now that you are dressed up as a bride, do tell us, how do you feel being dressed up as a Rajasthani bride??

Sanaya - Paro, ie Sanaya has dressed up as a bride a lot. This is the longest continuity of being shown as a bride. Wherever I go, I dress as a bride. Be it the show, promotion or promo. So for me, it is very hectic, but obviously, it is a beautiful get up for anybody.

All brides look beautiful. It takes a lot of time dressing up, as you can see. Luckily the make up is not heavy as Paro is a village girl. But jewellery, as you know, Rajasthani, they really dress up, the clothes, the jewellery and all of that, so we have maintained that.

VO - Hearing Sanaya speak, it sure sounds like she does not like make up at all. That is why, putting on make up is the most boring thing for her. We are right, are we not, Sanaya??

Sanaya - My face does not look good in the get up of a bride. I do not know, I feel it is too much. For me, less is more. So when I see all this, I feel I should remove some things. But I am sure other people like it.

VO - You are right. Your fans always like to see you in this avatar. Though it is a different thing that beauty lies in simplicity also. And you do not use make up in real life.

Sanaya - I really do not. if you see, in real life... I have dark circles, I do not use any make up. In fact my friends sometimes say, at least apply kohl, because lots of people use kohl on a daily basis, but I don't like that too. I think that I should let my skin breathe on a daily basis. I only use chap stick.

VO - Tell us, does Mohit prefer you when you have make up or when you are without make up??

Sanaya - It makes no difference to Mohit. I am happy, then Mohit is also happy.

VO - Ok..Ok..Ok... And we also like you anyway that you are. And we hope your audience also agrees with us. Before we leave, from U, Me aur TV, all the best for your upcoming show.

  15. What Colors intends to do post Bigg Boss 7

    http://www.indiantelevision.com/headlines/y2k13/dec/dec87.php

JAIPUR: The year 2013 is about to end and everybody is getting ready to plan their yearend parties. However, there’s someone that’s making a new beginning even before the New Year sets in. When the world would be partying and bidding adieu to 2013, the general entertainment channel Colors would be ushering in to a new beginning with two new shows – Beintehaa and Rangrasiya.
While the first is a show with a pan-Muslim milieu that tells the story of two similar and headstrong individuals Aaliya and Zain, who are in a volatile relationship, the latter is an explosive and edgy intense hate story between Paro and Rudra that would air on the channel at the prime-time slot – 9 pm and 9.30 pm respectively – from 30 December, 2013, every Monday to Friday. The one-hour slot being filled by these two shows will be vacated by the celebrity reality show Bigg Boss season 7.

Interestingly, the channel thinks it’s completely okay to make a new beginning on the second last day of the year as the regular TV viewers would still catch up on the shows rather than partying. “How many of us really go out to party on 31 Dec, I don’t think many. If we don’t talk about the youngsters in the metros, then I believe most of the people still stay at home and want to watch TV. And, the craze for the New Year specials on TV has also gone down in the last few years. And thus, the viewers want to watch the daily soaps and both these shows are just going to give them more variety,” says Colors fiction-head Prashant Bhatt on the sidelines of the grand launch of Rangrasiya in Jaipur on Thursday night.

The channel that has been at the second position in the GEC’s ratings chart almost all-through the year in 2013, is looking forward to add diversity to its already strong fiction line-up. However, considering the past record, the shows that have replaced Bigg Boss in the previous years haven’t really done too well, case in point – the second seasons of Na Bole Tum Na Maine Kuch Kaha and Sanskaar…Darohar Apno Ka that were on air at the prime-time slot before the seventh season of Bigg Boss kicked off. While the former was wrapped up before the launch of the reality show, the latter has been moved to the 7 pm slot.

Quiz Bhatt about this, and he refuses to agree that Sanskaar… hasn’t done well. In fact, he says that the second season of Sanskaar… is doing better than the first. However, somewhere he consents that the shows replacing the reality show have not been able to get similar popularity that other fiction shows on the channel have got. “There’s no set formula for success, but we should never stop trying to come out with interesting stuff,” he says as he guarantees that the present attempt is going to be really rewarding.
However, coming back to Rangrasiya – the serial has been produced by Nautanki Films – the same production house that has produced Madhubala…Ek Ishq, Ek Junoon for Colors and stars Sanaya Irani and Ashish Sharma. The story is loosely based on William Shakespeare’s Othello and a large part of the few initial episodes have been shot in different parts of Rajasthan – mostly Rann of Jaisalmer, dunes of Jodhpur and Bikaner. It thus made more sense to launch the show in the state.

    1. According to the producers, Saurabh Tewari and Abhinav Shukla of Nautanki Films, the shooting in Rajasthan was done on a grand scale with almost 60 camels and 200 junior artists over 18-20 days. Six cameras were used during the shoot, out of which three were Epic-M Red Dragon cameras that are mostly used to shoot movies. The show has quite a few stunt scenes that are directed by Amar Shetty, who has done Om Shanti Om in the past and is currently working on Happy New Year.
Tewari says that Rangrasiya has been made on a similar scale as a Bollywood movie, something like Ishaqzaade.

Giving more details about the production, Shukla says that so far close to Rs 4-5 crore has already been sunk into the show. “We have shot it in Jaisalmer and many nearby villages. A large sequence on cross-border terrorism has been shot in the deserts of Rann. We have also shot few scenes in the Mohangarh Fort where the movie Sarfarosh was shot earlier,” reveals Shukla, also adding that they had zeroed down on other options like Uttar Pradesh, Gujarat, and South India as well, but Rajasthan was chosen because it gelled really well with the plot.
“After the success of Madhubala…, we wanted to raise the bar for Rangrasiya in terms of the visual scale and narrative. From visual conceptualisation, to the scale and experimentation with the characters, everything is real,” he adds.
However, the post-production work has been done in Mumbai and now since the show has mostly in-house scenes, a set has been erected in Andheri, Mumbai where the rest of the episodes are being shot. “We will keep coming back to the state as and when the script requires,” says Shukla.
The channel's focus is currently on massively promoting the two shows across all platforms. While the promos went on air across-channels some time back on TV, now they are set to hit cinema theatres. The shows will be promoted with today’s release Dhoom 3.
Commenting on the marketing and promotional strategy for the two shows, Colors marketing head Rajesh Iyer says, “We have designed a very high intensive outreach campaign to engage audiences at multiple touch points across the country. Beintehaa and Rangrasiya will be promoted extensively across mediums including in-theatre integrations during Dhoom 3 in HSMs, OOH across 60 cities and towns, and a media mix comprising of over 40 channels and radio stations covering over 40 cities. As the launch leads into the New Year we will be launching special calendars with select publications to enable audiences to bring their favourite characters home. To ensure that both shows continue to be the topic of dinner-table conversations, we have developed an all-round social media strategy exploring various avenues.”

    2. The fact that the rival channels have some of their most popular shows at both the 9 pm and 9.30 pm slot is also not bothering Colors much. While Zee TV has one of its oldest and most loved shows, Pavitra Rishta at 9 pm and Qubool Hai at 9.30; Star Plus airs Diya Aur Baati Hum that has become one of the most popular serials of recent times at 9 pm and the family drama Yeh Rishtaa Kya Kehlata Hai at 9.30 pm.
Bhatt says that the new offerings would make a place for themselves in the audience’s heart.

“At the end of the day, the audience is hungry for something new, something different and we are offering that. Most of the times viewers keep watching certain shows because they don’t have an interesting choice to switch to – they either have family dramas or social dramas. However, we are breaking that mould with our new offering and are hoping that like other shows that we already have, even these two would be loved and take us to the first position on the ratings chart in the coming year,” he says.

Ironically enough, the real-life partners of the lead actors of Rangrasiya - Archana Taide (Ashish's wife) and Mohit Sehgal (Sanaya's fiance) are both currently starring in Zee's Qubool Hai. Now let's hope that coincidence leads to another one: Colors' new shows too become as successful as Qubool Hai.
