TV This Fortnight 1st - 15th Nov

Am slowly getting back to some TV watching ...

So far I like Gustakh Dil and Ek Boond Ishq.

Production values of EBI are really good and all the actors look their parts, the rich Shekhawat family looks upper class, Tara's family looks middle class, except for her sister, who could be either.

Gustakh Dil is sweet, there are no evil vamps or villains there, even the MIL's feelings towards her village DIL are understandable, given the way her son got married. The acting is uniformly decent, I like the girl playing Lajjo.

Balika Vadhu ... ewww, ewww, ewww ... they replaced Ganga! I loved Sriti ... I can't handle the new Ganga. Strike BV off the watch list, Shiv-Anandi were boring, I was watching only for the Jagya-Ganga story.

Qabool Hai ... KSG now sports a pony tail ... what is it with Gul's heros, why do they all start looking like bhangis sooner or later? Though KSG at least shaves regularly, thank heavens for small mercies ... but a pony tail? Seriously?!!!
Not following the show for ages, just caught a promo ...

Madhubala has dropped completely off my radar, as I watch Ek Boond Ishq at 8.30.

Need to get back to Aankh Micholi ... it was shaping well, last I watched. Also heard good things about Jodha Akbar ... anyone watching that? The girl was second lead in a SP show, Ruk Jaana Nahin, she was prettier and more talented than the main lead, not surprised to see her in her own show. I can now catch that at 8, as BV is out for me now :)

  1. Hi Dia!
Do watch Jodha-Akbar...Presently its the only serial that has me hooked like anything...other i watch on and off just to catch the story.
Jodha-Akbar is in its best phase right now...after the hatred, love has started blossoming between the two..its just they are not accepting it. Akbar...because he has given words to Jodha to not to go closer to her and Jodha...because she just cannot accept him as a husband since she had been forced to marry him against her wishes. Their dialogues are fantastic and the acting is superb.

    1. Hi Ananya,

Nice seeing U after a long time.

I agree with you, JA continues to maintain its quality. Here is another show where the tarot card readers went wrong..they had predicted this would be just an average hit, but the show shot up the trp charts in no time- excellent script and execution.

  2. Ananya ... I've been watching Jodha Akbar the last few days after making this post, and I agree ... it's at a very nice phase right now, the most enjoyable phase of a love story! And the acting is uniformly good all across the board ... a good watch.

    1. Dia, it has all the ingredients of a filmy love story. I love the chemistry between the lead actors.

  3. Hi Dia,

Not been seeing much of TV other than QH, which is the only show I am still religiously watching. Anyway, my thoughts based on what little I have watched.

QH: Gul made a costly gamble with Muqaddar ka khel and seems to have won her audience back slowly with mohabbat ki jeet...perhaps a little too early to tell. But the show seems to have done well for all involved. Looks like Gul’s bad luck is turning. KSG won two awards in a row, SJ won best newcomer, Arshad won best director (Gold) and QH got the desh ka dharavahik....the success that eluded IPK seems to be showering itself up on QH. Good for the team- happy for them. Now all I want is for Arshad to rejoin after his stint with SC and get the show back on track.

Rashid ‘s triangle has been touched up on again...with Shireen ready to tear Dilshad apart for what Asad and Zoya did breaking up Ayan's marriage, earning him the talaqshuda title so early in life.. Not many hopes of any reunion any time soon, since all the secrets except Tanveer’s have been kept under wraps so far.

I guess it is all leading to the two wives and five children living under one roof...I suppose that is the only fair solution to this triangle.

JA: I have always liked this show, though I have not ben able to follow it regularly. Hope it continues to be a ‘hatke’ EK show.

BALH and Pavitra Rishta: There is something very wrong with EK. She believes in breaking up her couples not for one or two or ten years ...it goes on to some 15 – 16 years. The better part of a man’s and woman’s life is over by the time they start trusting each other. Priya and Ram Kapoor seem to be divorced now, and apparently Ram married someone during this break if I am not mistaken....the catalyst for all this being Priya’s amnesia. I am not even trying to connect the dots here. Someone needs to actively connect the dots in Ms. Kapoor’s head very badly! And I was complaining about NBT!!!

MB: It is not worth it ranting about MB. So I will briefly mention that they murdered off RK’s character well and thoroughly by making him go up the roof in a suicidal rush. And if that was not enough, GH transplanted the dadimaa of IPK as bhabho here. If he stopped with that it’d have been fine. He made RK shout at the old lady much like ASR did, trying to protect his wife’s honour..only to run madly in search of her, once she left home.He could have atleast let the old lady go her way, considering they found her in a temple...but RK just cannot send the old lady back to the heaven she came from..so he drags the museebat back home! And this old lady is the most irritating dayan I have seen on TV. She must be really bad, considering I usually love the negative characters in this show.

Well, I must say the side characters continue to hold my interest, so it is not a total waste of time..the dialogues count too. I liked the stabbing twist, though RK becoming paralysed, was really stretching it a bit far.

RR: If ST is going to give another MB here...TBH, I am not looking forward to another Nautanki product. I hope things work out better for San. I really liked Archana’s husband in his previous show...But I personally want to see a more mature face opposite her.

The show I am looking forward to: Tumhari Paakhi...in Life OK...starting today, I think. I like the leads...know the girl from Main Lakshmi....and the guy seems to be an established actor- Iqbal Khan. The promos are quite catchy. The articles are impressive too. I like the concept of this show. Wish San was doing something like this. I want her opposite some seasoned actors like these, rather than baby sit chocolate faces. (Anuj was good, though.)

9:30 PM slot: Is already the most competitive spot with QH, YRKKH, JLZ and now Paakhi. And RR will add to the competition.

    1. BV:I was never interested in Shiv...even less now, since he ceased to be a hero, deciding to side his spoilt sister, accusing Anandi of not informing him of his sister’s childish misdeeds beforehand..when Anandi had clearly expressed her concerns over the suitability of this relationship...some heroes can never be redeemed. And with Ganga replaced...is it not high time they shut the show? Agreed, the trps are still with them...but have they not told their tale...child marriage, divorce, remarriage...everything has been tackled. What is left now? Widow remarriage? Caught the latest promo...they are going to tackle Shiv’s atheeth!

Two shows that seem to be going on fine for now: Ek Mutthi aasman and aankh micholi- both seem pretty well balanced. Sometimes it is good to take a break from intense love stories.

SC: Didn’t get to watch it even for Arshad’s direction. But it climbed up the trp charts for sure. Caught a bit in SBS...frankly, Saras is another boring hero for me.

Chalo ...I have bak baked about what I am not even watching...just felt like dropping in after I got to spend some quantity TV time recently.

Hope you have settled in well, Dia. This year has been ayear of major changes for a lot of us, I guess. My turn now...I am going to have a tough time shifting-juggling my job and family in the middle of a school year. Hope to catch up, esp since the blog will be more active from Dec...

    2. Hi Su,

Don't know why, a TV bug like me, is losing interest in most of the TV serials now?
Veera, MB & BV: I am not watching it now. What has happened to the lead actor in Veera? Sorry forgot his name.

QH: Not watching it regularly as I lost interest after some absurd plots and too much of screen space being given to Imran's family esp. his mother.

Aankh micholi: Its refreshing but i wish that the actor playing the dead husband was the lead actor. I had quite a crush on his TDH looks when he used to play the lead role in a serial opposite Shefali Chhaya. This was around 15 years ago.

Would try to catch up with 'Tumhari Pakhi'.

What is RR? Sanaya's new show? On which channel? Please give me the details.

All the best in your new abode!

    3. Su,

All the best for your move! Been there, done that ... I know what it entails, so double dose of wishes for you!

Have finally gotten TV installed, so am catching up now ... but I've lost interest in all the old shows, so I'm catching the newer ones more regularly. Haven't seen QH for ages, I have no idea what is happening there, ditto with MB, as I watch EBI in that time slot.

BV ... I was only watching for the Jagya-Ganga story, and as always, I am more attached to the heroine ... I liked Sriti, when she dropped out, I dropped it ... besides, I watched the culmination of their love story, so nothing more for me. They are going back into social issues, now touching on adoption ... so I've given that up, watching JA at 8 pm these days.

I like Aankh Micholi ... but have missed it the last few days ... caught it last night and saw Sanjay is getting engaged to Bhavna ... but acc to the precap, he will declare his love for Shruti. So I'' try to catch it today!

I caught the grand wedding on PKDH the last couple of days ... for sheer grandeur, it was worth watching. This has to be the most lavish wedding on TV!

Ananya, Sanaya is coming in a new show on Colors called Rang Rasiya .. it will start end Dec, early Jan after Big Boss ends. The first look of Sanaya was released today ... I've made a separate post for it.

  4. Caught Paaki. Quite a colourful start.

Anshuman is a young, widower businessman, aspiring to climb greater heights. His marriage along with merger with another business house is announced when his past is raked up. He has a wife from his bal vivah..even if teh validity and legality is questionable, the fact remains that somewhere a girl could be waiting for him. Anshuman cannot tolerate his image getting tarnished...sets out to discover the girl, determined to get her to reject him, because that is what he wants.

He travels to Jodhpur, wgere Paaki is still waiting for him, unmindful of ignoring the proposals that are coming her way. She is a tourist guide, and the couple bump against each other as strangers in sunhari qila at a sunhari pal...which is supposed to bless their union.

The first episode looks impressive. Now I know what people mean when they say RR will be full of colours...Rajasthan is simply that...and they have lavished their budget on the first epi....waiting to see if the rest that follows lives up to the promise.

Wonder how they will take it forward.

Here is a story where the couple are already bound to each other, and one wants to get out desperately. Halfway through, Anshuman could make Paakhi fall in love with him and reject her ritualistic marriage for mohabbat...only to discover that he was cheating her all along...

Getting good vibes about RR now. Can't wait to see San all dressed up like that.

    2. This is based on a Bengali novel if I remember correctly and MeenaKumari movie was made based on it too.. in Telugu, they made it as Mangalya Balam with Savitri and ANR. They fall in love with him all along knowing she is his wife and she not knowing, hesitating to fall in love with this guy when she is married to another.

    3. Watched part of the first and second episodes, will follow it for some time. I like the color and grandeur they brought into the first episode, let's see if they can sustain it.

I'm liking LifeOk as of now ... both the shows I like are on it, and this is the third which has appealed. More the guy than the girl, to be honest ... but overall it was good.

The heroine Pakhi was the first choice for Khushi ... I am SO GLAD she did not play Khushi! While she is very pretty, she doesn't have that spark, and she looks too old, plus she doesn't have that innocence in her face that Sanaya had. I saw her in her previous show, just a few glimpses, she was very annoying there. Let's see how she does here.

Am with you guys ... seeing the color here, I'm looking forward even more to Sanaya and Rang Rasiya. San will look gorgeous in those lehngas. Have posted her first look in a new post - it just came out today.

    2. Jaya, I posted a brief synopsis of EBI on the previous thread, you can check it out. Coming to progress, MJ discovered that his mysterious girl friend who visited him in his ujda chaman was actually his wife, but since he is under death sentence, he decided to drive her away from him by increasing the hate she already has for her husband. So he does that, by taking her on a date to a isolated spot and then pushing her off a cliff ... obviously not high enough to cause her any major harm. So Tara is even more sure that it is her own husband who is out to kill her. She is quite silly ... never bothers to stop and think ... like most chirpy telly heroines!

In the last ME on Monday, Tara finally snaps after this last attack by MJ and decides to leave him and snap the chain on abuse he has been subjecting her to ... which was his intention all along. She asks her 'friend' to help her ... 'friend' is of course, MJ himself, but she doesn't know that. In the course of the journey, she discovers that her 'friend' and her husband are the same person, and is furious with him for tricking her and trying to kill her.

The idiot hasn't stopped to think that he saved her so many times. She decides to take her revenge on him ... the last two episodes have been about that, and I haven't liked Tara in them, she is too childish and silly. But MJ/Viraf is good ... am watching it to see how she will figure out that he is the victim and not the perpetrator ... and how they will join hands to expose the real villain.

I like it because even the villain, kalavati, the eunuch, has a solid reason for behaving the way she does and her extreme hatred for his/her father and brother. There are a lot of loopholes still, but the execution and screenplay is very good. And Viraf is total eye candy, he does the brooding intense look superbly!

  6. The show I like the most these days is EBI. Simply love this unusual story which keeps getting better by the day. Dia, Tara is not as silly as she appears to be. She seems to be out on this revenge spree to break MJ and get him to reveal his true identity - the ruthless husband whom she feared or the kind hearted saviour whom she trusted. The fact that he is not retaliating inspite of all her provocations should be answer enough but then they need to stretch the plot I guess. Someone drew an interesting parallel to Hindu mythology. Viraf is superb as MJ and Neel. Chavvi is not as good but then the script and production values more than make up for any shortfall elsewhere. The mystery is gripping but then I feel they should slowly start the unravelling process.

My second favourite show is KZAM. Gautami and Maanav are doing a splendid job and the script is realistic and down to earth. A mature love story which is well set in family drama.

Dia, I too watch Gustak Dil and love the show. I am really impressed with Sana as Lajjo.

IPK- EK Baar Phir is interestingly poised now that the leads are married. Family drama is the forte of this PH and I think with the end of the unimpressive romantic track, they will concentrate more on how Niranjan's true face will slowly be revealed to the rest of the family. The actress playing Anjali, the woman trapped in an abusive relationship which has made her abusive in turn, is simply superb.

I catch MB on the repeat since EBI has taken precedence for me. Am still hooked on to this show because of RK-Madhu chemistry and Viv's brilliant portrayal of RK. He has shown so many shades to this character and the current track of a paralysed superstar who feels increasing insecure about the rising importance of his wife who is making her entry into films gives him the scope to do so.

I was forced to watch Bigboss to bid time till 10.00 because I did not find anything interesting. Tried to rewatch QH but just can't connect to the story. KSG looks so jaded and Surbhi seems to have suddenly aged (or maybe it is the make up). Anyway I'm glad I found something to watch in the 9.30 pm slot after Tumhari Pakki started. I always liked IQ. He has the best voice in the industry. I don't like the girl though. Looks too old.

Seems like I watch far too many shows for my own good.

  7. WOW!!!!!!!! :D the promo is heart wrenching.... Sanaya has definitely taken a huge risk this time... and if she has to pick up a rajasthani accent then all the more so...

a BIG slap in the face for all those who thought she didn't look "Indian" enough.. well, here she is now, a village belle..

I really really hope the show gets successful.. :) :) waiting eagerly for it...!!!! :) :)

    *keeping my fingers crossed*
