Caught echoes of my own self in Sanaya's words in her latest article - she's in no hurry for marriage yet, wants to concentrate on her career. Familiar words, familiar sentiments ... what's the hurry? Marriage is for life, but for a girl, establishing her career really needs to be done before marriage, because much more than for a guy, life changes after marriage for a girl and her time gets divided. If she wants to concentrate on career, it has to be done before marriage - at least the foundation.
And am so glad to see that she's waiting for a strong and pivotal character ... really want to see her as exactly that. Gunjan was the weakest character in the show, the most cliched and stereotyped, and it was basically Sanaya's portrayal that allowed the cv's to develop Gunjan's character the way they did. Especially at the end of Season One and definitely in the first two months of season Two. So it would be wonderful if Sanaya gets a strong character like that to play again ... if she could turn a character like Gunjan on her head and develop her so beautifully, yet keeping her inherent strengths and basic values intact, I can't wait to see what she will do with a good, strong role.
Just WAITING now to see Sanaya on screen again!!!! Can any PH make a good, sensible decent show?

Hmm this is interesting no doubt but Dia i m sorry to disagree on a part - Gunjan being the weakest character.. nope I wouldnt say she was ever weak.. cliched yes stereotyped perhaps totally but never weak.
ReplyDeleteFor me the weakest character of this show was ans still is Nupur she dint have a novelty to offer - nothing to boast off - what was she ? or rather who was she ? just a mere ordinary gal who in a small hamlet was considered a beauty queen.. but who is to say Morena dint have more then one beauty queen ? did we ever see a side of nupur in which there was something which allowed her personality to ever be highlighted to make her stand out.
She perhaps could only be seen stealing the limelight cos there was rather one thing she was damn good at - yelling at the top of her voice and speaking out even before she could think once.. those made people look at her.. not sit back and notice her truly... she was the weakest link ever..
her character was furthermore of a loudmouth who could blast off crap anywhere without so much as a second thought coming to her mind to shut up
but to be quiet... to be submissive and yet ... yet simply make everyone sit up and notice you not by gimmicks or any other gesture or stupidity but for the sheer weight that your few words carried ... for the fact people dint wanna miss em was an accomplishment...
Sanaya' performance elevated Gunjan completely but only an actor' performance cannot be the incentive that can be held responsible solely for a character' downfall or even growth - there has to be a potential within the character itself
Sanaya could give her best to Gunjan as despite noticing how completely different is Gunjan to her own personality she saw the strength in her character - which could motivate her to do her best.. to not let those down who trusted her with this
as San has herself said in the mentioned article she is on the lookout for a pivotal role.. that is not something she has started thinking or feeling overnight .. it was always her criteria - and hence her choice to play Gunjan too gets validated for the same reason.
I know hard as it may be to believe but people like Gunjan do exist .. who may bottle up a lot of things inside them until the moment they are ready to burst as we saw with the bet track... in the initial episodes of MJHT wherein Gunjan was shown as a shy gal who would be threatened by Sam walking in the gals locker room or be shy at parties.. she was perhaps at her cliche best and totally stereotyped... but when the new year ball episode aired in which she blasts Sam for his lies came to the front - it was indeed proved - what an extraordinary actress Sanaya is and how strong Gunjan actually was... for she dint raise her voice, scream shout at the top of her lungs or even create a scene as Sam had lied to her or she felt cheated by him... no she quietly soberly defeated the one guy who was considered the coolest dude and the ace BB player of the college ... and he was left stunned to see this gal whom he so underestimated all along - standing aside him fulfilling her word knowing all along he had lied to her... and how despite having looked through his mask... she never considered herself to be his friend.. as she dint want to know the star of excel as he was - nope she wanted to instead befriend the real him...
oh and about her coming back on screen .. totally she and Mohit are missed to much want them back soon please
ReplyDeleteVG, when I said weakest character, I meant in terms of dialogues and screen space ... Gunjan had very little of both at the start from what I remember, and even in the Sheena track, her character was really massacred - the only she did was cry. The miracle is that she retained my interest even during that track - and that was because she never became hysterical or loud or OTT even there. Fortunately they had laid the basis of her character in the bet and exam track, and even more fortunately, Sanaya managed to retain that strength throught the Sheena track, which I will give her complete credit for, because the way her character was written was pathetic. Somehow she managed to retain the dignity and strength of Gunjan in that track, and after that, the cv's got her back.
ReplyDeleteBut I said before, and I will say again - MJHT was unique as a show because of that one character - Gunjan. Samrat as a cool dude with a lonely childhood had been done before by Dr. Armaan in DMG, although with Armaan going the popular route, while Samrat's character retained the depth and pathos, especially in S2 (actually, I stopped watching DMG so will withhold comments for that one).
But Gunjan was the character that made MJHT unique - a heroine like that has really not been seen on television for a long time. The last principled heroine I saw was my earlier favourite, Dr. Simran from Astitva - calm, dignified and graceful ... and now Gunjan. And the shades and evolution that Gunjan went through as a character - along with Samrat, she also evolved - so she played so many shades, that I think she will also have difficulty finding a role of that calibre again. Especially as all the heroines on tv these days are completely uni-dimensional!
As for Nupur - let's not even go there - she was silly, impulsive, brainless when she started off, and she was that till the end - she didn't even want to finish her graduation, for Pete's sake! She started with dreaming of her rajkumar, and ended with something equally filmy - so no change or development of character at all. And that's because the actress was capable of only that much.
