Musings ... and POW

Made the mistake of watching DBO first episode ... seriously, Gul has completely lost it!!! Such a ripoff of IPK that it's not even funny! I caught it because I rather liked Omkara's character in IB, whatever little I saw (I found it unwatchable despite actually trying, as I liked Nakul from PKDH) ... but again, Gul maata and her tiny brain which has just one storyline which she repeats ad nauseum in all her shows!  First episode itself was such a rehash of first episode of IPK that I gave up on the show then and there. The only scene I liked was the phone conversation between Shrenu and Anika ... because that was actually something new, and not copied ... and both the actresses were okay ... they were a bit serious in the scene, which they can manage ... they are both terrible when it comes to trying comic stuff ... I say trying, because neither of them can manage it without going unbearably OTT! Makes me appreciate Sanaya and her comic timing even more ... were her lines and scenes actually better, or did she just manage to make them better because of her acting? No wonder there has never been another Khushi since IPK! None of these actresses can manage it ... and Indian TV comedy writing is anyway terrible.

The actors are all hamming big time, except Rahul Dev, who was very good, experience shows! ... and Omkara (don't know the actor's name). Shrenu needs to calm down, as does her mother and chachi ... especially chachi ... that woman was AWFUL!!! Gul is still trying unsuccessfully to find another Khushi ... none of her subsequent actresses have managed to carry off that craziness nearly as well!!! And she's also trying to find another Mami ...  again unsuccessfully. Seeing these clones reminds me why IPK was such a craze ... not just the leads, but even the side characters were so good ... they had their OTT quirks, but they managed to keep them real. First Anika, and now Shrenu ... they are both terrible when trying the OTT cute bubbly stuff.

Ah well ... the wait for Sanaya continues ... in the meantime, POW is my saviour ... what a fab show. It's become even better since Siddhant entered, and the last two weeks have been amazing ... I wait for the next episode literally from the second the last one gets over ... and have been re-watching some of the episodes to savour the full flavour. Again, I wish San gets to act in a show like this ... even a small role in such a good show will be more than good enough. I have been loving Nazneen the last few weeks ... not surprising, Sandhya was in another favourite show of mine many years ago, Koshish, and she was very good there too, though the show stealer in that one was Varun Badola. She has been fabulous in the entire Karachi track ... and I love her scenes and her equation with Imaan.

  1. Hi Dia,

Thanks for continuing to share your thoughts and updates on Sanaya.
Even though its been a long time since I posted any comment here, I have been keeping up with your updates :-)

I wholeheartedly agree with you about comic timing in Indian Serials - they are very poor.
Sanaya used to manage to carry on even the most cringeworthy scenes with aplomb!

But I am guilty of watching and enjoying Ishqbaaz (sheepishly)
Because good lord there is nothing remotely as good as this on Indian TV!! Oh what days have come!!

Well,I did not start watching it back in August when it started?
Recently over the last month I caught up with a few recent episodes and the bonding between the brothers caught my attention because even with the three of them they all stood out in their own way and I loved the dynamic between the three.
Sure sometimes they go OTT/Cheesy lines about brotherly love but mostly they gel well together IMO.
The comedy in the initial episodes were really good, specially the youngest brother, Rudra's dialogues.

But I did not understand why Gul had to start DBO???!!
I know her answer was half an hour wasn't enough to explore the life story of the other brothers - they why couldn't she just make the existing show a 1-hour show?
With the other two busy in DBO - Ishqbaaz is suffering, turning out to be the usual Ekta Kapoor styled soap opera - and that's not my cup of tea. :-(

Granted IPKKND was one of a kind - makes me wonder if Gul is a one trick pony? Hmm.... meant no disrespect, just my thoughts.

Well will catch up with more later. :-)

    Regards,

    1. Hi MB, good to see you here! I feel like most days I'm talking to myself! :)
I did try IB when it started ... and even now, I tune in off and on. But I don't know, it's one of the few shows which I actually can't sit through an entire episode at all. I like the brothers scenes too, so if they're on when I tune in, I watch them, but that's about it. I don't like the little kid, he is an annoying brat, and I don't like the Anika actress, plus her clothes are so awful, she looks terrible (I know, shallow me!) And she is too big built opposite Nakul, who is a slim small fellow. I feel sorry for him - his first actress, Disha in PKND was also too big built for him, and so is this one. He needs a small petite girl opposite him - someone like his real life wife, who is a really lovely girl.
I liked Rudra and his one-liners too ... and again, there was an opportunity to show some depth to his character - the youngest pampered brother, who has been shielded from the marital troubles of his parents by his brothers, but is also affected by them, and shows it in different ways. But Gul has only one character sketch for her MLs ... and she can't handle anything else. Seriously, in IPK, Akshay and Deepali were not good enough actors to get much fan following ... and San- Barun were so good that everyone else was anyway left in the shade ... but in IB, I think Nakul-Surbhi are not that great individually or together, Omkara and Rudra both are better actors, so is Saumya, (better than Akshay Deepal, I mean) plus their characters were different enough at the start, so they did build up a fan following ... enough for fans to demand their own story.

I liked Omkara's character in IB - for once a non Angry Young Man with Bad Past typical Gul ML ... but in DBO, he has become a clone of Shivaay. Again, if the girl was better, I might have given it more of a go ... but the too obvious Khushi-wannabe styling and acting was a total put off. And some of the scenes of the first episode were a total ripoff of the first episode of IPK ... which was a further turnoff.

Anyway, it has done well the first week ... so Gul might be on to a winner here. This couple is definitely better matched physically than Shivaay-Anika, so they have good chances of taking off. I hope poor Rudra also gets his love story ... the girl opposite him, Saumya is cute, although she doesn't have much screen space.

Is Gul a one trick pony? Hmm ... I wonder too. The thing is, her first major show IPK was such a cult show that anything she does after that is always measured against that ... and found wanting. Maybe if she tries a completely different story, she might find the same kind of success ... there's no denying her shows are beautifully mounted and shot, and she has a good eye for casting. Although she seems to prefer the more manly wellbuilt females for leads ... Surbhi Jyoti, Surbhi Anika and the Humsafars girl are all very similar in looks and build. This DBO girl Shrenu is prettier, more like Sanaya ... so might work better. Just my thoughts ... no offence taken, so don't worry. You can say what you like here!

  2. Hi Diya Di

I agree with all that you have said.

Sanaya as Khushi definitely had a great comic timing, one of the reasons why I like Khushi, even though not love it.

Even as Gunjan (Sorry, couldn't help it), which was a no nonsense type of character, she had brought forth many shades of it including comedy, which wasn't OTT like Khushi or Myrah but not sarcastic either.

Hence, proved, Sanaya is a versatile actress.

POW is just turning out to be another fav show.

    1. Hi Srushti,
Lol, you don't have to say sorry for referring to Gunjan ... that is the character which made me a Sanaya fan! Gunjan had a very subtle sense of humour, which surfaced very late in the show ... towards the end only. She was a pretty serious character on the whole. Which, given Sanaya's absolutely opposite personality in real life, is such a huge testament to her acting skills. You won't find any arguments from me about Sanaya's versatility!

POW is fabulous! But given that it was getting 0.3 trps, and DBO in its first week in the same slot, has gotten over 2, I think we are still far away from getting any good meaningful shows on Indian telly in a hurry. :(
