IPKKND Ek Jashn - One Day in the lives of Arnav and Khushi, three years later.
The Jashn starts with a bland voiceover detailing a synopsis of the USP of the show ... Arnav and Khusi's 'nafrat paas aane na de, mohabbat door jaane na de' love story ... accompanied by flashbacks of their moments. The ones I liked were the Teri Meri and Diwali flashbacks and commentary on their mohabbat, and the temple engagement with the voiceover sonorously recounting how they always separated to meet again ...
Episode (if you can call it that) starts with a groggy Arnav reaching out to Khushi, her name on his lips, and Khushi on his mind, first thing in the morning, as it often was during the show. She's missing. A new HP in a long line of Prakash's (the makers remembered this little detail ... hope they remember more too) enters, apparently under strict instructions from Khushi not to remind Arnav what day it is, and why she's mad at him ... and hands over a smartphone with a video message ... where the new improved Mrs. Raizada yells at Arnav for forgetting ... forgetting what, she doesn't tell him. But she makes sure he remembers, by yelling at a harried HP till he lets it out in Arnav's hearing ... smart on Khushi's part ... given Arnav's history, as he proceeds to tell us. Cue bit where Khushi apparently knows her husband very well, as she forbids him to ask HP for help, just as he looks at HP for exactly that ... and both master and servant look away guiltily ... HP is cute!!! Very apparent he's far more scared of his hot-tempered mistress than of his mellow master!
There seems to be lots of progress in Khushi, simple cheap phones to smart phones and video messaging, from Hari Prakshji to just Hari prakash.
And Arnav Singh Raizada realises he is in deep doodoo because in three years of marriage, he has forgotten their wedding anniversary for the third time. First time he planned ... but wrong date. Second time he simply forgot.
Actually, he's not Arnav Singh Raizada here, he's plain Arnav, lion turned domesticated pussy cat ... tense like all husbands at this unthinkable crime her has committed, and wondering what his next steps towards redemption are going to be.
Vaise, Arnavji, you forgot three times in three years?! Alzheimer's ho raha hai kya?!
Either you're a glutton for punishment at the hands of your beautiful biwi ... or you enjoy the silent treatment as temporary respite from your chatterbox wife ... or you are as brain dead as Barun claimed to be (sorry, couldn't resist the last!)
So while Arnav tries to figure out what he's going to do to get his wife back, we go down Arnav's memory lane as he reminisces about their unconventional love story ... and how he's changed in three years. Balloons, decorations ... so different from Khushi's akdu Laad Governer ...
Sanaya was right when she saidASR is a tamed lion ... right now he's looking more like a pussy cat.
And lots of flashbacks of Khushi ensue ... their first meeting at the fashion show where she fell into his arms ... and Arnav wonders, how kismet makes the most unlikely bedfellows meet ... the girl who is now Mrs. Raizada, was once a scooter-borrowing, helmeted lehnga clad girl weaving her way crazily through busy traffic ... after their first bitter meeting, when they never thought they would meet again, she actually landed up in his office ...
And we finally get a peek into Arnav's thoughts ...
Khushi's lighting the diya in the office, and causing the fire alarm to go off ... typical Khushi mayhem ... the new mellow Arnav chuckles at the memory, and how angry he was then ... now the recollection only amuses him. That's just Khushi ... and her Devi Maiyya.
The red saree first ever Rabba Ve ... where ASR stood mesmerised staring at an innocent beauty in red ... Arnav says, Khushi looked 'not bad' ... then he sheepishly admits, actually she looked like the kind of girl one could fall in love with at one look .... admitting that's exactly what he did ... and that he fought strenuously against this feeling for the longest time ... a moment when she took over all his thoughts, when all he saw was Khushi everywhere ...
Barun's expressions in that scene were so good, he looked gobsmacked and totally mesmerised ... while Khushi looked like a dream in red ... anyone would be forgiven for falling for her like a ton of bricks.
The guest house flashback ... more admissions from Arnav, that he did wrong to send her there, that in his fight against his won feelings, he was mean to her ... and how flabbergasted he was to see this tiny slip of a girl transformed into a raging tigress ... this scene and the previous one rank among my top five Arshi scenes ...
And the episode ends with Khushi's angry call ... she's leaving ... Arnav's bemused 'but you've already left' ... and Arnav's belated attempts to manao his roothi hui biwi with jalebis ...
Hope next episode has flashbacks of Khushi's journey ... this episode had too little Khushi.
And some things never change ... when will Barun learn to ENUNCIATE???

Agree completely with the last comment. I have watched the episode twice - on the iPad and my comp and I still haven't understood some of the dialogs

Dia, as always you can make an episode feel better with your analysis. ASR did not look like ASR at all. I missed Khushi too.

Lol, thank you! ASR is now SPfied pati ... marginally better than Ahemji and Naitik ji ... I don't mind, I always wanted to see him wrapped around Khushi's pallu, and this is it. I also wanted a RTR ... remember we discussed it so much on this blog ... doubt we will get that, but he seems to have redeemed himself by becoming joru ka ghulam ... not completely yet, but close enough.
DeleteBut this episode just showed that the real charm of the show is Khushi and Arshi together. Arnav alone, and BS alone ... are both boring.

DeleteAgree with you Dia, Barun was quite boring, the 2 min appearance of Khushi was what made it so good, she brings an automatic smile to your face.

didn't watch the episode, hotstar is such an MB eater.now after reading your post,it feels like I've watched the episode. Glad that arnav and khushi are on our screens once again,something that I was not at all hopeful of.

I don't think they will show Aarav ... but they might show Khushi pregnant ... it seems it's been three years and they don't still have a baby ... so this would be a good way to wind up the show finally.
Aww, no worries, Ratna! I know there hasn't been much happening here, and I've been too busy to update very regularly too. Hope once this mini series is done, then Sanaya will be back in a new show in the new year, and we can get this blog buzzing again.

DeleteNo, as far as I know, this is being done by a new PH, Gul is not part of it. Gul is doing a show for Life OK soon though ... don't know when it will air.
I think Payal will be there ... she tweeted a picture of herself, and Akshay also mentioned Payal in some segment. Don't think Naniji will be there, or the Gupta family ... all three are doing other shows.
Would rating really be sky high for a single episode or two episodes? I doubt it ... when shows like Simar and Saathiya rule the roost, not too many people would tune in for a single episode of a 3 year old show. I think the majority audience for this is online, including international viewers ... most of whom anyway caught the show online ... so Star has targeted the right audience. They're doing this to popularise Hotstar mainly ... and they will succeed in that to some extent. They have also made sure that Hotstar is available globally in time for this EJ, so more international viewers can now tune in to watch this and also watch the old episodes on HS now. That's my reading ... I could be wrong ... some people are saying that this is a test to see the response for a new Sarun show. I frankly hope that's not the case ... and I think most of us here would feel the same way.
I didn't watch Bahubali ... it came on TV, But I haven't watched it ... didn't have the time.
I have seen the Dilwale trailer ... the SRK Kajol love story looks a more intense one this time, unlike any of their older films. So that is interesting. Also their song Gerua is simply fabulous ... what locations, what photography ... amazing! Worth a watch on the big screen just for that.
Otherwise typical RS movie, lots of fancy cars, chase sequences, action, glitz ... it will be a fun watch, RS movies usually are ... and I do plan to watch it in the theatre.
I'm also impressed with the Bajirao Mastaani trailer ... for once, after a long time, an SLB movie looks promising. So two good movies coming up.
Oh ... I plan to watch Tamasha as well ... just for the eye candy ... stars and the locales both!

DeleteJust wanted to say that when you are free,watch bahubali the beginning ASAP,its that good a movie.seriously! Strong recommendation.iI just loved the film,the story and emotionalcontent and connect more than visual effects and the brilliant job the actors, director and the wonderful BGM did.
I'd be waiting to know your thoughts after you watch the movie (waisey Telugu original with subtitles is the best but Hindi HD version is available in YouTube and the dubbing is very good.) and read your analysis too.

Sad we didn't get much of sanaya in this episode so hopefully in for a treat in the next one. You where right when you said it is Arnav and not ASR, and I am sure that being married to Khushi has defiantly had an effect.
Barun still looks very thin, and the waistcoat could have been fitted better, but he did look pleased to be back. Hoping to revive his flagging career i should think and of course that could only be with Sanaya.

DeleteNice to see you back! Did you manage to watch it? Yep, too little of Sanaya ... I was looking forward to watching firecracker Khushi as happily married Mrs. Raizada, with all her insecurities gone, a well-loved respected wife and daughter-in-law of her husband's family. The little glimpse we got was enough to whet my appetite ... she is back to the old Khushi of the initial episodes. She seems to have done some major taming of the lion ... ASR is all gone, only Arnav the husband is left ... such a cute pussycat ... he gets his own coffee because Khushi said so. All husbands could learn something from this Arnav!!! :)
Barun has lost weight .. considering he left for health reasons, among other things, the long break doesn't seem to have done him much good. He did look happy to be back ... and this project of his has hit the air as scheduled, a first for him after IPK ended! Fortunately he has cleaned up and does resemble the old ASR ... I was afraid he would come on as the long haired unshaven hobo he has been resembling lately. Thank God Star forced him to clean up for the shoot, otherwise it would have been a disaster. I saw his pic on the twitter chat ... he's back to that look, and frankly, he looks terrible. Don't know why a man who can look this good, chooses to look so bad. Doesn't bode too well for his career, but I guess that's his outlook ... I'm just pleased he cleaned up for this RU series.
The next episode will air on Saturday. I'm busy this week, but will update as soon as I can.

Maybe its like what you said ASR is a well domesticated husband now :-) so I did not see any ASR in him, I felt is Barun all the way...but liked the flashback scenes and they were indeed the best ones from the original season. Other than that is was a little...MEH.. for me!! Maybe its too early to tell this, but will wait for the next episode and will continue the same regime of watching it after reading your update!
Dint I already tell you you have your way with words, I always have a smile or chuckle while reading them - keep them coming.....glad to see the blog buzzing again :-)

ReplyDeleteSo, the first episode was a total nostalgia trip from Arnav's point of view. It was nice to hear few home truths, which most of us already know, straight from the horses mouth. His "dil" had started to beat for Khushi long, long before he cared to admit. The flashbacks they showed are some of my favourites, especially the guest house scene because that is the Khushi, I loved, but there was a bit too many FBs,hope to see more new content in future.
Yes, the entire episode was about KKGSR and a little glimpse we got of her was really good, Sanaya has not lost a beat, but hoping she makes her appearance fast on screen and we get to see this new updated version more. Arnav has mellowed, but he is expected to be when he thinks of his favourite women, he was putty in his Di's hands now he is in Khushi's. He follows her instructions even in her absence. His patience with HP was a surprise, until Khushi taught him that too. BTW, HP is very cute and Aman is also there...lol... However, what is this Arnavji forgets anniversary three years in a row, no wonder Khushi has made preemptive strike, before the day is over.
It was nice to relive old memories, but hope we get a bit more and the much elusive closure for this love story.
And yup, Barun looked exactly like when he left the show, tired, worn out and now even a wee bit thinner now, leisurely pace has not really worked wonders for him. Just hoping to see KKGSR soon. Looks like she too got two costumes, a red saree and red salwar suit.

Since EJ is meant for hotstar promotion basically, and viewers are mostly
international female fans so hotstar started the show on fifth gear directly.
Barun Barun and Barun but honestly i so much agree with you that Arshi is what makes the junoon so intense.
in the last three years i have grown old and my hearing ability gone down so i had hard time understanding his mumbles.
Barun is Barun coz of ASR and ASR is magic coz of his chemistry with Khushi
so waiting for khusi in the next episode.
why do i have this feeling that this round of EJ will go to Sanaya.
opportunities doesnt knock twice but in rare cases some ppl get lucky
hope the person in question understands it this time

I got addicted to your blog from the time I felt like I needed to understand this show. It had so many nuances that you don't understand easily in first view but your takes and re-watches makes it so much more special. Anyways I have to tell you that I watched this show much after it was over and the Tamil version was relaying. After catching the Tamil version of the guest house episode I needed to know what happened between these two that they are so at loggerheads. You could see the love for her in him but why can't he say it. Then I started googling and chanced upon your blog. Then there has been no turning back. I have read your take multiple times, because I just enjoy reading it. It feels as though you, Sama, Shweta, Sandy, Rekha, Mona and Gargi are all my long lost friends, Most of the times I could guess how each of you might react to something in the show. Long story short I love your writing. Please also finish your fiction 'Kaise Yeh Rishtey'

DeleteSo happy to see that you're reading Kaise yeh RishteyI A quick word about the background ... the story was written almost ten years ago, so it's a bit dated ... no cell phones, etc. I wrote it for another favorite couple of mine - SRK-Kajol, soon after KKHH released. So you won't see the typical IPKKND Arnav Khushi here at all ... the characters are completely different. The story is complete, I am just converting the names to Arnav Khushi and the other IPKKND characters as I update. Again, it should go faster now that the holidays are over!
And thanks again for your sweet words about this blog ... I can write on characters and actors when they touch me ... Sanaya managed to do that in MJHT, and I have followed her since then ... I loved the Sajan pairing too. San and Barun were brilliant together in IPK, and I actually became a bigger fan of Sanaya then, her role as Khushi was so diametrically different from Gunjan, she just knocked my breath away! And Barun was so good too. During MJHT, I loved Sajan, but I wanted a show for Sanaya as solo lead, with a better actor, and without her specs, to see her beauty ... in IPKKND, I got all three.
After IPKKND, I wished for her to be with a good hard working dedicated actor, and I got that with Ashish ... but the show wasn't a hit.
So now my wish list is a very strong character for Sanaya, a talented, hardworking costar, and a TRP hit show. My list just keeps getting longer!
