SP firmly back at number 1, followed by Sony. Nice to see my two favorite programs, KBC and Indian Idol, in the top ten ... doesn't happen often at all!!!
Rabba Ve, the original IPKKND, is still at number 3 in the rural charts! That show has some amazing recall and repeat value ... almost 6 years after it ended, and despite two clones after it, the show still holding strong! And this is not counting the innumerable reruns and dubbed versions both in India and abroad.
Radhekrushna makes a strong start ... will check it out online! Hotstar subscription is so far somewhat paisa vasool!
Big Boss drops low ... heard that its very boring this year. Colors shows have all dropped ... except for Naagin at number 1, the rest are struggling in the lower half of top 20. Bepanah and Silsila both drop out of top 20 ... not surprising. I used to watch both sporadically in ad breaks of KBC ... now I find them both unwatchable.
The problem is that with the widening of the TRP net, the popular shows reflect the choice of viewers in small towns and villages. Urban viewers have mostly switched to online viewing. So urban, modern thinking shows will struggle to find a foothold and gain any TRPs - they already are. No wonder TV channel honchos are moving back to regressive crap. Having said that, the golden days of Indian TV included shows like Saans, Astitva, Hasratein, Dekh Bhai Dekh ... all very progressive shows with good storylines ... and they were ll popular with the masses ... Doordarshan and the earlier new channels were free everywhere ... so are the TV honchos just being really, really LAZY???!!!
I feel that sooner or later, Indian TV is going to switch to two separate programming streams, one for mainstream TV viewers, and one for urban online viewers. I subscribed to Hotstar a week ago to watch Dandiya Nights, and already find myself checking out other SP shows more frequently, simply because it's so much easier to browse when I have the time, rather than sit down to watch TV at a specific time. If Voot, the Colors online platform, and SonyLIV, the Sony online platform become available to international viewers, I might just subscribe to those channels regularly, and cancel my regular TV subscription. At the very least, I will use the online channels to watch shows that appeal to me, and use TV only to catch up on movies. And if the movies are available on the online platforms as well, I don't need a TV subscription at all, especially if I can stream my shows on the TV screen and watch them on the large screen.
