Sanaya on JDJ8 -Week 8

Will post pictures in a while. In the meantime, a nice article in Fuzion.

http://www.fuzionproductions.com/sanaya-irani-3-character-traits-that-we-wish-to-see-her-perform-on-screen-wishful-thinking/3/

I don't really want an out and out comic character ... Indian writers cannot write slapstick without going overboard or completely stupid ... witness Comedy Nights with Kapil. I would prefer a Khushi type lively character. On the other hand, Sanaya has been there, done that,  and it's unlikely to find a better version of Khushi in the near future. So I would prefer 2 and 3 ... a grey character, with heart of gold of course :) ... and a modern corporate businesswoman/ lawyer/ head honcho type. But both are likely to remain wishful thinking for the near future, till Indian audiences start accepting heroines in such roles ... at least those 20,000 trp/BRAC audiences start accepting them ... or Indian TV channels find a way to cash in on online viewers.

Pic of Sanaya's next act on Colors website.

Quick weekend review - this was probably the worst weekend on Jhalak since the first one, in terms of performances.

Saturday - Shamita did a blindfolded act with her choreo, the troop was not blindfolded, and they pretty much guided both through their movements, including even their hand placements. So a good concept, not well thought out, and not well performed. Am surprised ... and happy ... Shamita got only 37 .. the performance did not deserve more.

Mohit did a matador act ... visually very appealing. All bold red and black, flames in the background, and a high energy, passionate performance. The dance troop was well used.  The act wasn't flawless ... he got the Immunity ball for his 'hard work and improvement' ... like, really?!

Raftaar - group act was messy, the costumes were very boring, the entire act was untidy.
He was in face off with Vivian ... whose act as Rajnikant was actually good ... entertaining, full of dance from Vivian (that's a rarity!) and fun to watch. But VD lost out and is eliminated. Raftaar stays in the competition. This elimination was quite weird.

Sunday -  first we had completely avoidable drama about judges' elimination and Karan leaving for his film.

Sanaya's act was first ... again messy, and poor use of the troop. It was a fun act, but not at this stage of the competition ... they need much more than 'fun' and 'cute' now ... they are among the front runners for the trophy, and every act now has to have the Wow factor. This one didn't. The judges' comments were harsh, but deserved.

Scarlett's act was high energy and fun, and good use was made of the troop.

Faisal's act was more about brilliant choreography than dance this time ... visually very high impact. The impact lessened once you realised the dancers were on the floor ... but the overall impact was still amazing.

The relay dance was okay ... I liked Raftaar and Scarlett, and Mohit ... although he was not scored. Sanaya was okay. Shamita forgot a few steps, and got 10 ... go figure!!! Good that KJo is leaving, hopefully Shamita's laddoo scoring will stop. Raftaar got the lowest score, which he did not deserve. He is probably the next to go.

Other Shows we're watching

Am trying to catch up on some TV ... so far nothing is riveting, and I haven't got the hang of the timings yet.

Mainly watching Indian Idol junior on Sony, and The Voice on &TV ... both have some amazing singers.

Caught an episode of ETRETR, Drashti's new show ... the sets are grand, the acting is good, Rajmata is dignified and gracious, Ranaji's Dadi is Surekha Sikri, whom I like, and she is interesting ... is she as white as she appears to be? Might try to follow it.

YHM ... watching off and on. So now Ishita wants to try for a baby? The entire premise of the show was her being childless. Oh well ...

Sanaya on JDJ8 - Week 7

This week the theme is  Andaz Apna Apna

Sanaya is doing a comic act, with strong shades of Charlie Chaplin. Strike that - she is doing a Charlie Chaplin act ... which has to be one of the toughest acts to pull off well. With her comic timing, she will do it justice, I have no doubt. And the pics and articles trickling in, seem to indicate the same.

Colors website article is effusive in praise of her act ... and apparently Salman Khan, the guest judge this week, loves it too.

http://colors.in.com/uk/photos/exclusive-sanayas-andaaz-on-jhalak-this-week-will-remind-you-of-raj-kapoor-50008681.html

Sanaya has shown us what talent she's got on Jhalak with her different Avataars in the six weeks that have gone back. Not only that she has been quite a favourite of judges as well as the viewers. And, in the coming of week she will surprise all of you even more!  The upcoming theme of ‘Adaz Apna Apna’ Sanaya stunned everyone with her childhood andaaz!

Sanaya Irani will be seen performing on  Bhag Milkha Bhag number ‘Ghul Mil Launda' and because our Sanaya loves to see other people happy, she will be seen in the Charlie Chaplin avatar.

According to Kharan Johar, her performance was one of the most difficult performances on Jhalak Reloaded. Salman Khan called her performance to be an incredible one and a great attempt after Raj Kapoor. Woah!  That’s indeed a big compliment.

Salman does a "Jawani phir na aaye" with Sanaya!

Dance Guru Ganesh couldn't resist joining the duo on stage!

Will she be safe for the coming week and how will she fare in Ganesh and Lauren’s scores? To know all about Sanaya’s upcoming performance, tune into Jhalak this Saturday and Sunday 9 PM onwards.

Edited:
Sat 23/08 - Performances by Shamita, Irfan and Mohit.
Shamita was very average, don't know why KJo keeps praising her to the skies. She had none of the sultriness and expressions required for the Madhuri song, and not much of the grace either. No wonder she never made it in BW.
Irfan was cute, and clearly out to enjoy himself, since he announced his retirement from theshow due to preponement of the domestic cricket season.
Mohit was average again, his bhangra lacked the gusto and energy required for that dance form.

Raftaar, Ashish, Shubhreet in bottom three. Shubhreet performed her first act with a prosthetic leg, and needless to say, she was not good. Hats off to her for her courage to go on stage within a week of getting her new leg, it takes weeks to months to get used to moving with an artificial limb. Good for her, the Jhalak stage gave her this gift. Her act was choreographed very well, but she was clearly unused to her new limb. She left gracefully and with a smile. I liked that she acknowledged that she made mistakes, Lauren pointed them out backstage, which she really appreciated, Ganesh never found any mistakes, which she also appreciated, but I think not as much ... she didn't want the pity he gave her.
Ditto Ashish, who has probably been expecting this to happen sooner or later, as he was the weakest dancer. His fans have been saving him, but this time he was injured due to a harness mishap in his aerial act, and had no choice but to accept 'elimination'. Feel Colors should have announced he was retiring due to injury, rather than subject him to 'elimination', but I guess the channel couldn't have two contestants retiring in one evening.
Raftaar danced the best of the three, it was an okay performance. I don't remember either the dance or the song, which shows how average it was.
Salman Khan arrived at the end of Saturday's episode.

Sunday 24/08 - Athiya Shetty and Sooraj Pancholi are guests with Salman. Athiya looks more like her father, which is a pity, her mother is beautiful. Tall and ungainly, I was not impressed with her. Sooraj is better looking, spoke better than her.
First performance - Sanaya with Wulu mulu wonda in Charlie Chaplin style. WHAT a cute act!!! Perfect synchronisation, perfect timing, perfect expressions, all of Charlie Chaplin's signature moves, his bumping into others, tipping his hat in apology ... the kiss from Lauren at the start, the umbrellas, the fight over the bench... all done to absolute perfection. A comic act is far more difficult than a sad, emotional one, a lot depends on timing, and Sanaya and Jai had theirs down pat. A performance my dad would have loved. Fabulous - I had a grin on my face the whole time, and I've watched it five-six times already, each time that grin finds its way back to my face!
Judges all gave great comments, Karan said it was her best act yet, Ganesh commented on their synchronisation, Lauren loved it. Salman asked if she was a non dancer - Sanaya said yes ... he laughed at that! Sanaya got 30 on 30. Perfect! And she won Performer of the Week! Yippee!!! She's just getting better and better every week.

Scarlett did an emotional freestyle dance for her mother, a cancer survivor. Very good, very emotional. She also got 30.
VD did tango with a football. He looked good, dance was okay. Too much concentration on the football, and not much done with it at all.
Faisal was introduced with a sob story about his dad being an auto driver, and his mom working in a bank. His performance was very good, there was no need for the sob story.

Sanaya on JDJ - Week 6

Was moving house,  so couldn't update. Now finally settled so updating quickly ... will update pics later.

This was the Independence Day weekend, the theme was Made In India.

Sanaya performed a mujra/kathak on Baby Doll. I didn't like the choice of  song at all, but the glimpse of the tech rehearsals made me  change my mind. Really well choreographed, and the unusual choice of song lifted the act from the mundane to the extraordinary. And Sanaya performed the difficult kathak steps beautifully, her postures, the mudras, the hands held exactly so ... she even won a perfect 10 from Shahid Kapur, which was great considering that his mother is a Kathak dancer, so he has more than a basic knowledge of Kathak. And she looked utterly gorgeous in a pink and black Anarkali, beautiful styling. She got 37.

Also adding to the entertainment quotient was the visit on Jhalak sets of Saif and Katrina promoting their new film, Phantom, and Yousuf Khan to support his brother Irfan. Which led to an informal cricket match between the Pataudis and the Pathans ... Sanaya, Saif and Shahid in one team, Katrina, and the Khan brothers in the other ... and some hilarious moments as Sanaya hit two sixes, much to her own surprise as well as of her team.  It was cute to see Sanaya totally at ease with Saif and Katrina, she was at one point happily chatting away with Saif ... wonder if they remembered that they had done an ad together years ago. Altogether a fun episode.

Other acts I liked were Scarlett doing a reprise of Mary Kom. VD did contemporary dance on a patriotic theme, the concept was good, the lifts were very good ...  dance,  as usual, not so much. But the overall act was nice, fitting with Independence Day.

Faisal did 'lavni', dressed as a woman ... okay for me ... I don't much care for lavni. He got 40 and the immunity ball. Scarlett and VD got 40 too. I think Sanaya deserved more, going by these scores, but as usual, she was a tad underscored ... Colors probably trying to ensure that her votes keep coming in.

Bottom three were Radhika, Faisal and VD ... all three were very surprising ... VD is very popular, he is probably getting highest votes after Sanaya ... Radhika is the face of Colors and was promoted as such, and is also supposedly a trained dancer ... Faisal is of course excellent. Radhika performed Bharatnatyam to Chammak Challo - I liked her performance for the first time, but she was up against Faisal, and didn't survive. So elimination number 3 ... finally!

I didn't like either Mohit or Shamita ... wrong choice of song and style for Independence Day weekend. Ashish was okay ... Raftaar doing taandav was decent, but have seen much better taandavs.

Sanaya on JDJ8 - Week 5

This time the theme is Bollywood reloaded, and the contestants have to pay tribute to a BW superstar. Which is more difficult than it sounds, because they have to incorporate the qualities of  the superstar while still trying to make their performance unique.

Initially we thought Sanaya had gotten Kajol ... I was happy, because I love Kajol. But turns out she has gotten Kangana ... which is a good choice by the judges, as she has the same type of pixie features and slim body type as Kangana does.

And what was left, was provided by the makeup and clothes .. Cherag Bamboat always does a great job with Sanaya's makeup, but this time he has excelled himself.
